  • After much deliberation I have made the tough call to swap my Flex 6300 complete with PC setup for a Yaesu FTdx10.

I feel sorry for you Mike.
I had the same problem here, about 4 years ago and sold up completely.
I tried EVERYTHING, and have not got the time to go portable or mobile.
The lowest bg noise I had was S5-S6 on 12m/10m but as I came down the wavelengths it got steadily worse.
S7-S9 on 15m and 17m, S9+ on 20m, S20+ on 40m, and literally S40+ on 80m, constantly at all hours of the day or night.

Mike I have owned an Icom 7300, a FTDX 10 and a FT 710AESS. I would definitely recommend not getting the FTDX 10 for no other reason that it is so easy to bump the VFO tuning knob with all of the buttons around the VFO bevel that it becomes no fun to operate. (Bob Sherwood even commented on this in his report and interviews) It would be problematic taking it portable particularly if you were going to use it in your vehicle. You might even want to consider the FT 710 Field which would be perfect for your portable operation. So from a guy who’s owned all three radios, I would definitely recommend either the Icom 7300 or Yaesu FT 710 field. Enjoy

I use the ft710 as a mobile radio and it really has been a game changer.
I think even compared to the dx10 it has an advantage both in price and size with matching performance.
I wish you all the best. P. S plenty of clips on my page for you to compare.

Sad to see you selling up the base station especially because of noise.. As someone else asmentioned further down have you considered the FT710... I have one and I must say I was very pleasently supprised .. Might be worth a trip to a friendly store and take it out for a test drive!!

Noise can be a nightmare to get rid off .Loads of hams have given up because of it .Fellow youtuber Tim has great sucess going mobile and i think that a lot more folks will follow his lead .Best of luck whatever you do👍

Agree Mike, noise is the curse of Amateur Radio, you will sell the Flex no problem, SDR is the only way to go, I operate the SunSDR2 DX and it is the best to date, and I had the 101D for two months, I was glad to see it go..
If it was me, I would probably go for the 710 over the dx10 yaesu, Duncan in Scotland has allot of fun with his... Enjoy your mobile ops.

Shame you are selling the Flex because of QRN. Are you sure it is not home QRN have you done tests? is all cables RF clamped? you have a lovely home set up with the 3 monitors. Think really hard before letting the Flex go you may regret it. 73 Phil G0BVD

Have you looked at the Wolf 2 ddc/duc sdr? Its all mode, all band, 100w, has ATU, 0-200tx, 0-700rx, wifi, cw decoder, 7" touch screen, etc etc. They're about 900quid.

Noise has driven me off the bands for the past 18 months as it swamps my antennas all through the day (many new solar installations and home offices where I live - many with high power wi-fi that extends for several houses further than needed !). Despite careful tuning and filtering it is ever present. I will have a final go at improving things but I suspect mobile is the only solution. 73 M7BLC

What have you done to fix your issues from your appliances in your home? Alot of issues with smart devices and cameras, but very simple to correct. If its not that you could have transformer going bad somewhere. I would start with ferrite chokes on all of your smart devices power cords. A lower AGC setting on a sdr can really help you lower your noise floor to copy a station. I run mine on my Hermes lite 2 and Sun sdr2dx at about half way. The NR in thetis is a real game changer. Your notch filter does not look like it is doing much when I was watching your scope. Both of mine when I set a nf the signal drops off of my scope. I would ask for some help before giving up on your station. Maybe have a cook out/rf finding party at your location. Never seen a Ham who does not like to eat. Anyways Good Luck.

I have tried it with the mains breaker off so no electrial supply in the home. The flex has gone to a quiet home that I will still be able to use remotely.

Great demo! QRM at my QTH is bad. I currently only have a Yaesu FT857d for HF and don't see the point in an expensive radio with high noise floor. I much prefer to operate static mobile with my Slidewinder Coil and whip albeit less that convenient. At some point I may buy a secondhand 7300 as its still pretty compact. Good luck with your new radio! Simon M0SCS

It's sad, but I think we're being pushed out of Radio. I have severe QRM at home and nothing I've done has made much difference (filters or cancellation) as the noise is so pervasive.
I now just have a QRP HF (IC705) set in my camper van - but have not found many places with a low enough noise floor to work anything but local stations. IC7300 is a nice radio.

I see you have CCTV system, how are the cameras powered, via POE supply? I have terrible noise from POE from my cctv. Took sometime to work out where from and tried all sorts of options. In the end put a wifi switch on the power supply and turn it off when using the radio.

Yeh, its not a local (my home) problem as I have tried it with the mains supply off.

What a tidy shack.. Mine is a workshop environment. I too suffer with noise. Rarely on nowadays.. my latest rig is the G90 and a virtually new old FT857d. Main rig FT450D. That Flex is very good.. I invested last year to do some portable work. But sadly, my time is very precious and found insufficient time even in retirement to do any. Just one event which produced nothing Hi. So the portable gear now installed in main shack. Good luck with your plans. Hope you find more time than I do. Thanks for the info. De gw4gja

I bought a flex, I had it for about 2 months, I sold it and now I run my own built SDR.
I had a lot of noise now I'm running my SDR the noise has gone, even the Icom 7300 is a noisy radio, just look at the schematic of these over priced radios..

  • @che59v
    @che59v 9 месяцев назад +1

When it comes to noise (QRM) antenna choice is key, many are hiding their loops with wires hanging off trees (or whatever is around) the wires so small they are hardly noticeable, yet those antennas are great performers.
Nothing can beat a small H.F radio that needs no computer to work, have a look at the IC-7300 this unit is intuitive & easy to use, sounds great on air and relatively cheap for what you are getting, those are proven to be a great work horse by now.
Whatever you do, all the very best into the future.
See the above as one more opinion among many others (who might know much more than this old man).
