This arrangement had everything..The highs and the lows..The middle improv was somethig to be marveled at! I am still stunned that they didn't win. This will go down as a classic arrangement...
When panorama comes around, Trinidad becomes divided with the Southern region and Tobago becoming foreigners. This tune plus Pan in A minor by Renegades are the two biggest robberies in Panorama history. Sad, but that's how we do ourselves.
Superb placement of rhythmic stresses and accents where they wouldn't normally occur in a typical pan arrangement. Hands down one of the BEST, most intricate, unsyncopated musical steel drum arrangements of ALL time. He lived up to his name....a true PRO!....Thanks for the music...RIP
No other tuner in panorama history has been talked about so much. This will always be remembered. Tunes come and go but everyone will always know pan by storm.
so what about pan rising by phase 2 that was the biggest robbery anyway I thought myself fonclarie won but Renegades was perfect clean on point that night
For me, the semi-finals' performance was better than the finals. Of Renegades, their finals' night performance was the most clean and cohesive of a truly coherent arrangement.
I was in the North Stand that night. Comments were made that the tune was played too fast. As a veteran of playing the steelpan for the last fifty years the commentators did not know what a panaroma tune was about. Fonclaire has one of the best tonal quality that night ( from my experience was a judging criteria) and all the various pans were clearly heard. I agree the Professor was robbed that night.
Agree about the tonal quality, thanks Fonclaire for retaining Lloyd Gay when most people dumped him guess he had to show off to get back his business after the storm he got more business, I have been through storm and there is a calm when the eye passes , you can go outside and play a little. The song has that but with the speed it was missed,
@@TheBardapple True. I think "Iron Man" tempo was more smoother and Renegades took advantage...eventho Fonclaire's storm came a-booming. Everybody jumped up in de storm, but after it passed people partied in the calm still n forget bout de storm it seems---well de judges lol
People were stunned at that performance after they played people actually left the savanna that night saying that they have heard enough pan did already know that fonclarie had won when the result was announced people started booing
I'm still hypnotized by that run between 7:31 and 7:48, that run commands you to shake something. If the judges were blindfolded and didn't know that this was a band from South, then Panorama 1990 would've belonged the the Professor.
Boy I am a Renegades fanatic listening to that piece of music again by Fonclaire, they indeed was the better band on the night. They should have won. Professor gone to soon rest in peace!
Ken Professor Philmore is probably fed up of people telling him that he won Panorama with that arrangement but will have to live with that for the rest of his life. I am happy I was there to experience it.
The test of anything is that it endures ( stand the test of time). No one can DENY you of the fact that this performance endures.ONE OF MY TOP CHOICES.plays it regularly.
Greatest steelband opening for a panorama tune. It was Professor's year and will always be the winning tune for me. Even Boogsie could not top this introduction.
Saturday 24th February. 1990 National Panorama Finals Queens Park Savannah. What was forecasted to be a Cat 5.Storm (Musical Storm) was somehow downgraded to a Cat 2. Storm by d judges. Fonclaire places 2nd. But we knew that they won on that night. R.I.P Bro. Ken "Great Music".......
The thing is, eventho people jumped up in de storm, the judges enjoyed the calm afterwards unfortunately...which "Iron Man" tempo was just right n not too fast. Still this was a masterpiece
Never heard a panorama crowd cheer louder at the end of a performance. How they didn't win that night will always be a mystery to me. Robbery without a gun!
Just heard the sad news. This was got to be my most enjoyable and memorable Panorama Finals performance arranged by the late Ken "Professor" Philmore who just passed topday! :-(
Thought they had won it...really!There are some arrangements you hear on panorama night, and that's it.Even those that might have won.And then there are arrangements you can listen to years after with the same relish...the same joy. This is one for the latter category!
This robbery took the air out of Mr. Philmore's sail. Don't think he ever recovered from this. He said to Alvin Daniels a few panoramas ago. "What does a south band have to do to win a panorama"? It's time mandatory drug testing be implemented for the judges after each competition. They sure were high on something this night.
From the first note it hits you! If they ever have a countdown of the best steelband arrangements in Panorama, THIS hands-down would be my vote for number 1! That song just stole my heart and soul. I was a secondary school student at the time and years later it was a welcome earworm during the school day. That performance cemented a love for pan music in my teens. It has stuck with me for life. A true classic!
THIS IS PHILMORE SOUL CRYING OUT YOU HEAR THIS NOT A DULL MOMENT HMMMMMM ....THE JUDGES NEVER LIKE PHIL CAUSE HE SPEAKS HIS MIND AND DOWN TO EARTH REAL SOLDIER OF LOVE ..R.I.P
The results did not do justice to this performance. It is obvious that the Judges were not present at the Savannah for this performance. Well done Fonclaire!
No disrespect to the bands that played between Fonclaire and Renegades but they were boring after the storm, not that the music was bad just they fail to get to the level, when Renegades came it was flawless and they fired up the crowd once again, with Fonclaire score sheets handed in a while and Renegades sounding so much better than the bands after Fonclaire I expected some judges to forget what they gave Fonclaire and score them higher unintentionally, so after Renegades I said they win and they did. I am sure the standards were pretty high and the judges were generous and they probably didn't get lower than 95 , but the eye shrunk with the speed so the storm ended with the eye as opposed to Renegades who kept the refrain she hit it pang, throughout the piece, not a Jit classic but another flawless Renegades rendition gained the rewards had they played before the storm it would've had a different results

It's a blessing in disguise that Fonclaire didn't win. The fact that people still talk about 18 years and at basically every Panorama speaks for itself
They were not robbed Their semis performance was better than their finals I was there and asking myself, why did they not play like they did for the semis
I remember this Panorama finals like it was yesterday. Renegades won with Kitchener's' "Iron Man". No one actually remembers that. All we remember is that VAT 19 Add to dictionary was robbed. Does anyone remember what margin they lost by?
They lost by 2.5 points, and even though arguably it was the biggest robbery in panorama history, to be fair Renegades Iron Man is and would always be remembered so don't let your emotions resort to insults.
WELL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! this is the Third south Steel Band have the Opportunity to go for the BIG ONE in (1990) Exactly like the first two large south Steel Band who won the National Panorama in 1965 , 1967 is Cavaliers also 1975 is Hatters each one of us miss the RIP Professor!!!!!!!!!!! evey Body love his Tallant .
