One of the few great Nick Drake covers I've heard! Nick seems to be one of the hardest artists to cover. His recordings have such intimacy that almost all covers sound shallow in comparison. Well done.
I met briefly met Glen Hansard on a plane, I think he was on his way back to Ireland after he won the oscar. He wa flying coah like everyone else. Coincidentally he was featured in the in-flight magazine and my young daughter wanted is autograph but was to shy to approach him. I went up and asked him to autograph teh in-flight magazine. He was incredibly nice and I came away with an impression of him of a humble person and a great Irishman. This is one of teh very few Nick covers that I have really liked,
his look of sorrow and resignation at the end really seals it for me... i love glen's interpretation because it adds to the song his own style but he still (and most importantly) manages to capture the emotion of the song that nick seemed to intend
Penso che la cover di Nick Drake, sia magistralmente interpretata da Glen Hansard il quale riesce a rispettare l'intimità compositiva dell'artista e riesce a rispettare anche se stesso. Bravissimo.
Yeah but the soundboard is the most important part of the guitar, having it like that kind of defeats the purpose. I prefer function over form personally.
Sean Noonan he's commented on it before he genuinely doesn't keep it for the look. he keeps it because of the sound and play. or so I've heard. like he hasn't found a guitar he likes better than it
I was just reading the lyrics to "things behind the sun" and then from sheer disbelief I googled Drake's age. He never even saw 27 years of life and yet he discerned wallowing despair and understanding of the human condition. That moved me. Btw this cover is sub-par in my opinion. Leaving a like as it will introduce generations to Nick Drake.
i think he plays it in drop d, capo on 2. this is what i could see and play by ear verse chords: 333000 | 000230 (he plays a little riff that goes something like 000230 000030 004030 000030 020030 000030, for the timing look closely at the start. also sometimes i think i hear 222002 and 000232 during the verses.) chorus: 444200 | 222000 | 444200 | 222000 555000 if anyone hears this better let me know :)
great cover mate! I always find when people cover nick drake they try and add too much un-needed noise. Much like his producer insisting on having orchestral stuff in his music. Nothing more than a voice and guitar is needed.
glen can i ask you a personal question? im coming to terms with my life. can i ask do you drink alcohol i know that sounds personal but you inspire me from addiction and i wish i was so driven to do things like this like you. its gripped me brother. you rock
Mick was a great songwriter. From people close to Nick he wasn’t a good performer (Nick was exceptionally good looking tho). His song writing talent reflects in the musician who still cover his music. Nick is one of my favorites and I like this musician as well.
Love the cover of Nick Drake. Nick's music just doesn't wear out and covers prove that point. I hope Glenn gets a new guitar soon. I think he's worn that one out.
What does he use for a pick, a feckin' barrel grinder? There is no way that a pick has done that damage. Its been intentionally done for the "road weary minstrel" look. A little competition with Willie Nelson's Trigger? It doesnt fly...
This is an excellent version of the Nick Drake song, sung with great feeling. Of course, no one can be expected to achieve the depth of Nick Drake's vocals, filled with such heartbreaking melancholy and longing. And the strumming isn't as deep or resonant as Nick's original either. Maybe, as another commentator Josh Turner has said in analyzing Nick Drake's guitar sound, it's due to the combination of things that went into Nick's unique sound including dead nickel strings that have such a rich and soulful quality.
I was watching nick drake covers and saw hansard's one. But the thing that struck me was the guitar(decent cover too). First I thought the pickguard was cracked and then slowly it dawned on me I was looking at ribs, it's like guitar surgery cringe!

sture8808 people try to do it but add a bunch of crap to it. you don't have to be a virtuoso to cover his songs but just keep them minimal.
You should listen the tribute album by Daniel Cavanagh from Anathema !
The young guy Tobias Wilden has covered many of Nick's songs.. You should check him out, you will not be disappointed.
Tobias is the best nick drake performer, pure as Nick!
sture8808 you're right!
My favorite Singer/songwriter playing a song by one of my other favorite singer/songwriters. Amazing...
Glen Hasard and Nick Drake, just a perfect combination!
Glen captures the soulfulness of Nick's song.
Nick Drake should be taught to kids. He was a beautiful shooting star. Long since in a better place.

Great cover of a fantastic song. Don't we all just want a place to be? To grow and prosper, just enough, and LIVE.
his look of sorrow and resignation at the end really seals it for me... i love glen's interpretation because it adds to the song his own style but he still (and most importantly) manages to capture the emotion of the song that nick seemed to intend
Listening to Nick Drake covers led me to this song and months later I'm now a huge Hansard fan
My favorite Nick song ever. Pure intimacy.

Love the dynamics. Just beautiful.

Beautiful cover. Amazing job, coming from a big Nick Drake fan.
Beautiful ❤
that guitar looks like it could tell a thousand stories
It already has. :D
More like 10 or 20 thousand.

looks like it got an acid bath or something

Glen Hansard is such a wonderful singer/songwriter/guitarist.
Glen always does justice to the original songs.

I love how I can hear hints of Pink Moon in the guitar
Mashing with the ‘Pink Moon’ intro lick. Dig it. Great original cover!

Wow man👏🏻👏🏻
The Great Glen sings the Great Nick

Works for me, thanks
@@prangmasterflash5590 your tuning is wrong
@@prangmasterflash5590 not for this song that’s for pink moon

That guitar has a story to tell..
Nice Song ... nice Guitar ;)
Good cover yessir 👍
❤❤❤❤
Bom demais
He'd do a great version of pink moon and parasite. Great music and musicians both
me, high af: lets see this cover. how good can it really be?
me: 0:06 *sees guitar*
me: like, subscribe &bstart worshipping god
This is the only cover I've ever seen in which the time signature is actually changed (from 3/4 in the original to 4/4 here)
❤️❤️
GOOD COVER, Thanks. I'll be listen'n to you... more.
Go on Dr Cox
Fair play mate. I like. 👍
nice
great cover mate! I always find when people cover nick drake they try and add too much un-needed noise. Much like his producer insisting on having orchestral stuff in his music. Nothing more than a voice and guitar is needed.
the producer did not insist. nick's school mate did the orchestrations at nick's request who loved them.
🙂
@@davidryan7386they were insisted by the manager for the first two albums til he left nick drake.
music from pink moon words from place to be :)
Walter Valentini Nope, its just place to be.
Sebastian Rasmussen no. Hear the intro, the approach is near to pink moon and not to Place to be.
The intro might sound like it, but it is not the same chords.
glen can i ask you a personal question? im coming to terms with my life. can i ask do you drink alcohol i know that sounds personal but you inspire me from addiction and i wish i was so driven to do things like this like you. its gripped me brother. you rock
Just stop. Nothing good will come of alcohol.
I love how you ask like hes going to read it answer some random ass question in a RUclips comment section
Nick did it in 3/4. Gave it more of an ebb and flow feel.
bro combined pink moon and place to be fair enough they’re similar songs
Sucre's cover of this song was pretty great too
Hello I want a dvd of Glen Hansard and i live in Brasil São Paulo. Can you gelp me? thank you for your attention
Holy shit that is a well used guitar!

Love the cover of Nick Drake. Nick's music just doesn't wear out and covers prove that point. I hope Glenn gets a new guitar soon. I think he's worn that one out.
Sounds very full for a takamine! I have the same guitar and I can't get it to sound like that.
its the tuning :) and yeah, I know what you mean
is his version available for purchase?
Don't fix it if it ain't broke. Besides, that's the HORSE!
tab for this? please? or tuning at least? i know Nick used some pretty out-there tunings.
What does he use for a pick, a feckin' barrel grinder? There is no way that a pick has done that damage. Its been intentionally done for the "road weary minstrel" look. A little competition with Willie Nelson's Trigger? It doesnt fly...
gotta say, decent cover indeed.
That guitar looks like trigger. 😢
Great... but when oh when is he going to get a new guitar?
someone recommended Nick Drake to me, and I was just like ok. I started researching him and found out he's vintage indie...i was like oh, that's neat
Nigel Chikukwa hes a folk singer of the purest sense. Get your shit right

From what I understand, that was Mic Christopher's guitar originally, but that could also not be true.
No,Glen bought this guitar just after the payment from a movie that he played(The commitments). His first decent guitar, back to 1991-92.
Much respect, truly, but no Nick vibe for me.
Someone get him a new guitar, poor lad
