Scary Stories: Legends Of Galicia Spain

  • I think there are as many versions of these stories in Galicia as their are people! We put these two scary Galician legends together from oral histories told to us by multiple people. If it isn't the story you remember being told as a child, that's the nature of legends. The truth is somewhere hidden between the versions.
la Santa Compaña is a good old-fashioned ghost story that predates Christianity. Similar stories exist in many other parts of the world...a procession of the dead (or undead) that are doomed to wander the world after midnight, lead by a poor mortal who is trapped by their spell.
I believe that Murder on the Camino is based on true events. The details are lost to history, but the event was notorious enough that the story was passed down through many unrelated families. We were told this story by multiple people who don't know each other, and there were striking similarities between the versions. What we do know is that along the Camino Primitivo route, a Templario killed a priest who was paid to hold a mass, but the priest refused to wait for the Knight's companion who needed to be at the service. This version is how we imagine that might have happened.

I'm from Galicia and when I was a kid and I used to live in my grandparents village I was legit scared of santa compaña every night. I closed the curtains of my room and tried my best not to look outside. If I saw this I would probably have a heart attack lol

Ya know, even filming it kind of creeped me out. When Iago (the tall santa compaña and also the priest in the second story) "baaed" in José's face, I had a nightmare about it that night. Thanks for sharing that, it's so interesting to hear how that story affected a Galician kid! 😘😘

    Dear Jane-in-Spain and Jones,
I happened upon your RUclips channel a few weeks ago when looking at items related to Spain, a country whose beauty and people (and food too) I admire. I have traveled Spain and Portugal over the past 15 years or so, and now spend half of each year in a town an hour south of Lisbon, and the rest here in the States. Being bilingual in Portuguese after living over a decade in Brazil, and then having learned passably fluent Spanish through lifelong travels in Central and South America, helps me understand, appreciate, and communicate. As they say, and you both have clearly discovered, language is culture and culture is language. Please do keep producing and airing your superb videos ... clearly works of love, talent and dedication. Your husband's filming & post production and your narration are all top-notch. I will not even try to imagine how much work and time is involved.
    Abrazos, Bill Stolz
PS - Your dog's putting her ball next to you both as you rest on your couch is delightful.
My son's German Shepherd does the same. Dogs' hopes and anticipation of the next
throw never end whether awake or sleeping.

Of course, it's a delight to be a viewer of your channel videos... such planning goes into them, a feast for the eyes at times, definitely the music matches the thirst of our souls -- but how much fun must you have creating such things for us? I wish you much luck, much health, a long happy life in España! Mil gracias a ti y a Jones! Me encantan sus videos! Guau...

What a kind comment. Muchisimas gracias! They do take a lot of work. But this one in particular was fun because our neighbors helped and they are a joy. We hope to keep making videos that celebrate this beautiful place and its people. Perhaps we'll tackle more Galician legends in future. The next video, however, is about the San Juan celebration. We filmed it last spring in the town of Arzúa, documenting how the people there celebrate the holiday. We had been thinking about holding it until next spring, but Jones wants to go ahead and share it, so we're hoping to have it out by the weekend.
