    My go-to video on RUclips to learn file basics. Spent 10 minutes trying to find it again just now. Just what I needed.

    Super simple yet thorough explanation of the file types and different grits based on numbers. Thanks this answered most my basic questions on files and gave me a better understanding of them. Could you make a video explaining the difference between Surface hardness in files? For example "1200 HV surface hardness" which is on a Pferd Corinox file. Why that is beneficial to stainless steel and special alloy metals?

    Hello there, which 8 inch half round ring file would you recommend for a beginner? There’s quite a few on the rio grande website with different cut patterns, are these important? Also, is a handle necessary when working with files?

    • @RioGrande1944
      @RioGrande1944  3 года назад

      Hi there! A handle makes it more comfortable to use a file - it also gives you more control. The cut of the file determines how coarse the the file is. A#2 is more aggressive than #4, for example. We recommend starting here: www.riogrande.com/product/Friedrich-Dick-Half-Round-Hand-File-Cut-3/114709. Here is the handle that also goes well with that file: www.riogrande.com/product/glardon-vallorbe-plastic-size-4-hand-file-handle/114923.
      We hope this is helpful, please let us know if you have any other questions!

    Thank you Mark! Very helpful walkthrough of the different files. I completely agree that if I had to work with just one file, the half round in a medium grit would be it. Needle files are also quite handy for details and getting into corners to finish off the edges.

      If you wrap that gold ring in a $100 bill and send it to me, I’ll small it up for you.

    what is the carbon content in hand files please?

    • @RioGrande1944
      @RioGrande1944  7 лет назад +1

      Hi There, Thanks for your question. In this video we show many files, so it is difficult to specify the carbon content of each individually. However, most tool steel contains between .5% and 1.5% carbon. This ensures that the hardness and strength of the tools is optimal, without increasing the carbon content to the point that the steel becomes brittle. Hope this helps!
