      We do that with some things here in the US, but it's usually "Demographic Based," like people who didn't grow up playing video games, calling every console a Nintendo. Down in some southern states, instead of saying soda or pop, they just call all softdrinks Coke.
      Those are the only two examples I can think of off the top of my head, but my guess is that it probably has something to do with the abundance of choice we have over here.
      Hoovers, for example, idk for sure, but I'm guessing that is like "The Brand" over there? Whereas here in the States, we use the generic word Vacuum, due to the fact that there are SOOOO many brands. 100% I would not know what a hoover is, if my Grandmother didn't have one when I was growing up. Here, I could probably knock on each neighbor's door and ask, "What kind of Vacuum do you have?" And get very few repeating answers... I think we have 3 different brands of Vacuums in this house alone, lol 😅
      We use a lot of "Catchall Words" that represent entire categories instead of a specific brand.

    The House of Lords have actually protected the people FROM their government’s law on numerous occasions by amending legislation that could be unfair or even unlawful.
    There are many “Lords” in there now who have been politicians and have been placed in there (by their political party) as they retire, nothing to do with Royalty more political nepotism, also there are successful businessmen, doctors and sportsmen amongst the members.
    At least it’s better than having our public voting in a similar manner to how they vote our MPs. If they did we’d likely have lost a lot of rights in the last 14 years of Conservative rule.

    The house of lords is needed, not in the format that it is, we have the house of commons, which want to pass laws, the people in the house of lords, are specialist, in law, ex judges, solictiors and the likes, what they do, when the governement wants to pass a law, it goes to the house of lords, where they look over the legal stuff, will it work, are there things maybe wrong, and not within the law, its then goes back to the government, to be adjusted, them back to the house of lords, for fianl review, if this was not done, law suit law suit, but us british are not happy the way they get in, but very much needed, for expert stuff and knowledge

      @mubbles1066 9 дней назад +1

      @@RileyRunsWithScissors would you call them “hand pies”? I’ve heard Americans call their “pasties” that….outside of the US a meat pie is circular or square and deep filled with various meats and will come with beer added or Stilton cheese etc.

    • @RileyRunsWithScissors
      @RileyRunsWithScissors 8 дней назад +1

      @@mubbles1066 I’ve never heard any of my family call them that…but it’s possible. I think the term “hand pie” is used more often in the Deep South. My mom got a craving for them a few years back (and great grandma passed years ago), so she attempted to make them, and it was nearly impossible to find suet in our local stores. Finally got some from a butchers shop. So we tried making them, and they looked right, but they were hard as rocks and completely inedible. 🤦🏻‍♀️🤣
      As far as what we call them in the US, that may be down to the regional vernacular. Folks from the south may have a different name for an object than someone from the east coast. Just like with fruit-filled pastries…we might call them empanadas, fried pies, fruit pies, turnovers or hand pies. But ultimately, they are all flaky pastry crusts filled with gooey fruit and sugar, and then fried. But all of the old women in my family make/made both their sweet fried pies and their meat pies in the same half moon shape as the pasty.

      Most are now life peers not hereditary , after a bit of digging there’s 426 seats in the House of Lords, 26 are the Lords Spiritual arch-bishops and bishops from the Church of England and only 91 hereditary seats of which 76 are ‘elected ‘seats voted by the other hereditary peers. The entitlement of hereditary peers to sit and vote in the House of Lords was abolished in 1999.

  • @riverraven7359

    The house of lords isn't like hereditary nobles anymore, it's more people given the title lord or lady for their government or charity work, unlike a medal though this is a paid legal position that basically reads all the laws parliament proposes and sends them back with a list of suggested alterations. It's like proofreading laws.

    In terms of family, the UK is like that one really weird cousin we all have that we still love, but we don't really want to invite to family doings.

    When I was a teenager my mother and I stayed with a Muslim family at a luxury hotel in Williamsburg Virginia from India who were royalty according to their family members who came from around the globe to visit them.
    However you wouldn't know it by their behavior other than having plenty of wealth they wernt any different.
    I loved learning their customs and met my best frind from Zimbabwe Africa named Zack why there.
    We bought a car that looked like a fish aquarium in the hatchback, it was a amc pacer that cost us $75 dollars or $37.50 a piece.
    There language was very different including their English. Lol

    I don’t walk on the pavement, if I did I’d be dead. I use the sidewalk. I park in a driveway and drive fast on the Parkway.
