that doesn't need to be realistic, that's the impossible events that start the movie. The issue is how they develop the rest of the plot, suspension of disbilief is not unlimited credit that lazy writers can tap into as they wish.
The problem isn't unrealistic world setting. The problem is unrealistic interaction. Before hundred years smartphones are also magical, so a movie that came out with smartphone 100 years ago would be on the same level of unrealistic as this one. But if the people acted unrealistic to their expected persona, it would still be a mistake. The same we would critique it now, it's the same critique 100 years ago.

So she's scared that no-one will ever want her again if she breaks up with him so she goes into denial about what he's really like and what he does and otherwise makes excuses for him because she's scared that she'll be nothing without him. But that's just how I read it.

Obviously, it backfired. In response to Stan's attempt at dominance, Troy asserted his own. Kind of like "You just tried to one up me? Newsflash, I'm top dog, boy." Then proceeded to use his experiance, intelligence, and basketball skills to deflate Stan's ego. At least, that's my train of thought.
