  • This was filmed on April 16 during the 2023 Manila International Auto Show at the World Trade Center in Pasay City, Philippines from April 13 to 16, 2023. This day was also a collaboration day with John Agustin Scuderia and Julian Dumpit. One of the six vehicles that was featured in a point-of-view driving video during MIAS was the 2023 Mitsubishi Xpander Cross. Thank you to Worldbex Services Intl (organizer of MIAS), Mitsubishi Philippines, Mitsubishi Fairview (Gateway), and Mr. Jasper Martinez for making this test drive possible.

    2023 Mitsubishi Xpander Cross (NC)

    103HP; 141NM
    Gasoline
Transmission and Drivetrain: 4-speed automatic transmission | FWD
    Price as tested: Php 1,338,000
    Impressions/observations during the test drive:
The exterior of the Xpander Cross looks more on the rugged side, rather than the sporty side like the Honda BR-V and the classic look of the Suzuki Ertiga. The Xpander Cross looks like a vehicle that one would bring on some outdoor activities like light off-roading and camping, because of its overall exterior design. Moving over into the interior, the materials are good and are on par with its competition. One feature that the Xpander has, but the BRV and Ertiga don't is the fully digital driver's display which even has 3 different choices of design. Like those two cars, the infotainment system of the Xpander is responsive and easy to use.
The power outputs of these vehicles are almost the same to each other and they (including this Xpander) make enough output to move the car quickly when needed so and smoothly when just driving casually. Its power is transferred to the front wheels by a 4-speed auto, which does its tasks well enough during both casual and quicker-paced driving. This is subjectively preferable over CVTs in some of its competition like the BRV. It's nice that they did not use a CVT even if this same model is offered with such transmission in other markets. The accelerator and brake pedals are responsive enough to inputs which make the car easy to drive quickly when it is safe to do so. Another responsive part is the steering which is light, but not vague and has some good feedback. This makes it quite fun to drive around corners. Its Active Yaw Control system also adds to the car's stability at various speeds. The comfort given by the suspension and the noise insulation are good.

For clarification, the 2023 Mitsubishi Xpander Cross starts at PHP 1,328,000 for Blade Silver Metallic and Graphite Gray Metallic (Monotone), PHP 1,338,000 for the Sunrise Orange Metallic (two-tone) (as shown in the video), and PHP 1,353,000 for the Quartz White Pearl (two-tone). In my opinion, power output of the Xpander cross is adequate and not necessarily underpowered and I do like how Mitsubishi chose to stick with the traditional automatic over the CVT. However, I believe that it would've been nicer to have a 5 or 6-speed automatic instead of a 4-speed to lower the rpm it stays at while cruising which could potentially lead to a better fuel economy. I honestly quite like the rugged design of the Cross' exterior and how they made it more "SUV-like" compared to the standard Xpander. As for the interior, the 3rd row is quite tight but that's probably because I'm 5ft 8, although you can ask the people who would sit in the 2nd row to move their seats forward to give you more space while still giving the 2nd row passengers enough room to stay comfy (unless you've got some relatively taller people in the car). An interesting addition to the Cross is the use of the same steering wheel found on the Montero Sport. Not only that, but it now also has a fully digital display. The infotainment screen is quite responsive and also has apple carplay and android auto. The overall design of the interior in my opinion, is really nice as it is on the much simpler side and isn't necessarily overly complex. As for tech, that's where the car kind of falls off for me as it isn't necessarily as packed with tech as competitors like the Veloz and the BR-V. It even has a 360-camera in Indonesia which the Xpander cross doesn't have here. Despite that, I think that it still has enough going for it to remain competitive as not everyone wants all of that complex tech. Another thing the Xpander Cross falls off in is safety. While competitors such as the earlier mentioned BR-V has 6 airbags, the Xpander and the Xpander Cross only has 2. Not only that, but the top of the line VX has honda sensing containing features like Adaptive cruise control (ACC), Collision mitigation braking system (CMBS), Lane-keep assist system (LKAS), Road Departure mitigation (RDM), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), and Lead Car Departure Notification (LCDN), all of which are not found in the Xpander Cross. Despite not being as packed with tech as it's competitors, the Xpander Cross still delivers enough tech to remain competitive. Although it only has 2 airbags (front), the Xpander Cross has Mitsubishi's RISE Body (Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution Body) helping to absorb and redirect impacts in the event of a collision, not only that, but it also has Active Yaw Control (AYC) which is one of it's main features not found in the normal Xpander. It also has Active Stability Control, Brake Auto-hold, Hill start assist, and Cruise Control. The Xpander Cross also adopts the same rear shock absorbers of the larger Montero Sport, giving the car a much better ride. I can't really comment much about the driving as I haven't driven it myself, but from the comments of the video, it states that the steering is "light, but not vague and has some good feedback.". Overall, although the 2023 Mitsubishi Xpander Cross is not as packed with tech as some of it's competitors, it compensates with it's spacious interior, comfortable ride, handling, and overall driving experience. Although it has the same engine as the one in the standard Xpander, it's power output is adequate enough to be able to drive even possibly to baguio with a full load (I haven't seen anything about that so I'm not 100% sure). But is it worth it's price? If you ask me, the Xpander Cross is worth it's price depending on which color you choose to get, but as far as I'm concerned, if the Xpander Cross is worth the money or not is debatable.
