This one had me ugly crying in the car trying to drive... I have 7months sober from meth and fentanyl and the way this describes the parent's side of dealing with their child becoming an addict and disappearing just made me think of my mom and dad and what they likely went through when I wouldn't call and they had no idea if I was alive or dead. The idea that basically addiction can take a person and drain them of themselves leaving only carnage and eventually a husk of themselves is just very horrifically poetic. Never thought I would ever compare addiction to cicadas. lol, we definitely have those out here in Phoenix AZ. I'll be thinking of this story now whenever I hear them.

Sister of a former addict here („former“ in the sense of being clean for several years now).
My sister had disappeared for years, and when we saw her again she was skin and bones. Though she had stayed clean she had sunk into such a deep depression that her finances fell in a ditch, and she literally hadn’t eaten in three months.
I had spent the months leading up to this desperately trying to establish contact, because I couldn’t deal with the nagging uncertainty anymore. And, finally, she just appeared to our Christmas dinner.
Her health is still shot, and she almost died several times from all the extreme surgeries she had to endure. But she’s still here. It took several years, but she’s in a much better place now.
      Best Christmas present ever.
I‘m trying to say that it’s not too late to try finding your family again. Depending on the reasons for splitting, of course. As long as you don’t hate them, send them a letter. It doesn’t have to be long. Just a „hello, I‘m still alive“ can mean the world.
7 months sober is amazing, well done. It’s possible to recover. I wish you all the best. 🙏

I currently live like Jake, and I have been for the last 12 years and every time I become sober I relapse again.
My advise to you is to be there for your son as much as you can, spend time and create memories with him, but remember "be there as a father, not a friend" or he will test you and if you failed he might slip away. And be very careful to who he's friends with. It almost always start with friends who have lost their way.
      Bless you and your family.

My explanation: Creature that thrives amongst locusts clasps onto the fabric of Jakes clothes when he runs away. It matures in the homeless shelter and goes around eating and hopping amongst homeless people, until it sees Jake ready to leave, and realizes it can go back. It pilots a hobo mech to follow Jake on his way back. Hitchhiked in his skin back home. It followed the street lights like a bug in a haze until it stumbled upon someone from its stolen memories. It latched onto him for support until it was ready to hatch from its cacoon, having already picked a new host early.

    Spoiler:
How tragic that he was killed right after deciding to get clean and go home after a decade of addiction. I think that’s what bothered me the most. I thought a creature’s offspring was gestating in his abdomen, affecting his mind and would eventually hatch, and I never saw the actual explanation coming. Great story.

This went into my "Best Pasta" folder. I love the delivery and the soundwork was masterful as usual. The story though hits pretty close to home. My family has been deeply touched by the opioid epidemic, and I've seen too many loved ones fall down that slippery slope to hell. It takes people piece by piece, and if you are lucky, the person will realize what they are doing to themselves before it kills them. This story really captures that feeling of wanting so desperately to help, but knowing you have no control whatsoever over the problem. I'm kind of glad that the big questions went unanswered here. That, too, mimics addiction. There are rarely clean, simple answers, just a messy reality.

The whole thing with the cicadas remind me of my Japanese horror series called Higurashi no Naku koro ni or translated as "When the cicadas cry", and because Japanese cicadas are different than American cicadas in some of the noises they make, its meant to be symbolic as the sounds they make sound like mournful crying or sobbing which is used a lot in the sound design of the series.
I highly get the atmospheric symbology vibes here.

Jesus dude... Every time I listen to your stories.. You audio-slap me back to my childhood. I feel an echo of tales shared at campfire by scout-leaders. I remember myself growing up with "Goosebumps" on tv and books I have read. You manage to take me back in time... going to my local library and scavenge through paperback supplies. The smell of a books, gentle rustling of pages, "the silence". Those fierce, silently judgmental, yet kind and weary eyes of Librarian that you felt on the back of your head.. Heh.. I always found myself picking 2-3 books by R.L. Stine, S. King, T. Clancy and others..
I digress. Dude, thank you. Look into doing a voice over for audio books and such. I went to sleep embracing Morpheus while listening to your stories, I have cooked a meal while listening to your voice, I drove a vehicle being intrigued by the tale you had to tell.. You have the voice.

17:54 ah man this story is hitting close to home. I used to play baseball, and was pretty damn good. Played pitcher and short stop, and almost always got on base one way or another when I hit. Then when I was 16, I found out what opiates and Xanax were, and I threw it all away. That was 10 years ago, and I’ve been to 4 rehabs, a halfway house, and 2 extended vacations in jail. I’ve spent every holiday and birthdays in some of the darkest places, and that’s not even the worst part. The worst part is looking back and thinking what could’ve been if I would’ve just stayed the course and listened to my mom. She’s a helluva woman and is the reason why I’m even here today, and hopefully one day I’ll be able to pay her back in a big way. Love the stories as always, and listen to them as much as I possibly can.🖤

i really wish there were more stories where the addict themselves aren’t the monster in some way, kinda like this one. rather than being some horrible beast transformed by addiction, the addiction is part of what made Jake vulnerable to being changed. it feels a lot more impactful if you know someone can get better (i’ve known a lot of addicts who did, even my own dad) but because they didn’t, something even worse got a hold of them.

The 12 year and 18 year cicada broods are supposed to intersect this summer, i think.
How do you know youre not part of a brood waiting to emerge?

Better quality of the background sounds and effects are getting better making the story come alive. Although I dont know which was scary the real life element or the supernatural element. Though the melding of both aspects would make the story come out more scarier. Cant wait till monday.

Kinda similar to this one episode of Supernatural about the Cicada Spirts that took people over in this one town, and then they all disappeared, and it happened every 20 year's or so.

Lol great story! But the parents are way to nice. Having overcome homelessness and heroin addiction myself, and witnessed what happens with other young addicts in the community. Most parents just give up on their kids immediately, that’s the sad truth. The reason being the negligence from family usually starts long before the drug addiction does. Honestly any former addict knows that hot showers are essential for PAWS and his aversion to showers should’ve been a huge red flag. The biggest tragedy in drug addiction is the complete lack of education regular people have about the reality of recovery.

The commentary about Tom Clancy novels is so accurate lol.
The movies/shows based on the characters are usually pretty good and the books are usually a slog. Red October is good though.

There are few sounds I love more than the hum of cicadas - and it helps me sleep. My adult daughter has a giant tattoo of a cicada, because she feels the same.

Instead of a juvenile center, the court should have sent him to rehab. Oh… the narrator just explained he did go to various rehabs… Jake just didn’t want to be clean… another ten years of that, while he was away from his family, having left rehab by will & vanished.

Wow, I noticed even though MrCreepyPasta has more subscribers than Dark Somnium, McP has way less viewers on his videos than DS. I feel like it has to do with DS’s high quality. It goes to show he has more people coming back to his videos over a longer period of time.
