The radio hosts are murderers. Literally got certified nurses and other callers telling them the contestants were in danger - KNEW about what happened to the college kid - and the contestants were complaining about pains and such, and still went on with the contest. They should be in prison, not just casually working elsewhere
its also not hard to remedy the situation, they just needed to be drinking a liquid containing some sodium. if they just spiked the water with salt, or used gatorade instead, wouldnt they be fine?
I am still shocked the DJs not only are still working but were "surprised" to hear they were fired. Unreal the lack of concern for the contestants. Disgusting. I really hope they are reminded of this daily.
Have you never listened to morning radio? Those kind-of djs don't give a damn about anyone but themselves. Howard Stern had a guy frequently come on the show he called "Gary the Retard". To say morals are few and far between in morning radio is an understatement.
Even though i forgot about it, I remember this story after hearing it and thought they faced severe civil suits, man slaughter charges, and were black balled from radio jobs- them having basically zero punishment disturbs me. Shame there isn't a reddit group somewhere who wants to find a LEGAL way to remind them daily of what harm they've done. The indifference in their voice while talking about the event afterwards is almost more disturbing than the incident itself.
I hope they live healthy and productive lives. If you think otherwise, then you demote the intelligence of the individual that died. Choice is a thing, and she chose to participate. She could have won that Wii for her kids, and she died in nobility. It is an insult to her intelligence to suggest she went into this oblivious to the dangers.

I’ve known about the radio station story for years but I still tear up every time I hear it. The thought of a mom going through so much pain and then dying only because she wanted to win something nice for her kids that they probably really wanted. It’s so sad.
Yes! It's a genuinely heartbreaking story of a mom who genuinely wanted to do right by her kids and didn't see the danger they were getting into, and I can only imagine how the kids felt (and probably continue to feel) knowing that their mom died needlessly for a stupid gaming system. Do they feel a sense of guilt or culpability even today, as kids in these situations often do? Did it destroy their love of games, as I can imagine it might for me? I feel incredibly sad whenever I'm reminded of it.
That DJ makes my blood boil and needs some street justice laid down on him. He was more concerned about losing his job than someone dying on his radio show. Making light of people possibly dying, disregarding medical professionals saying how dangerous it was, and then acting as though they had gotten the short end of the stick by being fired. They deserve to have been put in prison. They essentially killed that poor woman. I’m thoroughly disgusted by them and the fact that they were able to just walk away from it without any repercussions whatsoever.

The first story is even sadder than I remembered; I had always been under the impression that the victim had been a young girl who drank a jug of water in one go, won the Wii, and later passed away, but to know that Jennifer went through several hours of pain along with other people while the DJs laughed and mocked them, drank 9 liters of water trying to get the top prize for her kids, and that it all could've been avoided because the DJs knew of a similar case *AND* were warned by their listeners... Those three should've faced legal consequences.

I've heard that story about the water drinking contest many times before, but I'd never heard clips from the broadcast. The lack of empathy made my skin crawl.
I've heard the first story before and it's crazy how much it has stuck with me. When you started the video with that quote ("Anything can be a poison. It all depends on the dose.") I was immediately reminded of the story, only to have it be the first entry in the video. An absolutely infuriating story about a completely avoidable tragedy.

Jun Lin. This is the first time I see a documentary kind of about his murder that approached it from the victim’s side rather than the murdered. I had never seen so many time a photo of him and I think you did a great job and making your public remember his face and not the other’s.
Yet his killer is still very much enjoying his life, despite the fact that at the time of the arrest....he was hunting for more victims at an Internet cafe.

Oh my god, I work in EMS and that radio show audio is gonna haunt me forever. Jennifer should have stopped drinking after the pain started, but at a certain point when she started losing her mental acuity, the hosts became responsible for her condition. They should have immediately gotten her help, but they just laughed.

Which is why I believe in the death penalty. Tax payers are supplying him with his luxurious lifestyle while there are children homeless and going hungry. @@saltycat662 When you consider any form of punishment you must also consider the possibility of an innocent (falsely convicted) person being subjected to said punishment. So the question here is simple... *Are you okay with innocent people dying so long as people like Luca die also?* If so, would you still be okay with that if _you_ had to be one of those innocent people? Consider that one carefully. The problem with death as a punishment is that it cannot be undone. You can falsely sentence someone to life imprisonment, later realise your mistake, and at least attempt to compensate the innocent for the time they wrongly spent behind bars. If you kill somebody you simply cannot take that back. Death is absolute and there is NO recourse at all. Also, an a side-note, an inmate on death row actually costs the tax payer _more_ than an inmate in life imprisonment does. The death penalty is actually surprisingly costly to the tax payer. Just saying.
I have BPD and schizophrenia. That man using those as an excuse for the disgusting things he did is horrible. Mental illness doesn't make you kill people or animals. I'm glad he actually faced consequences. It's definitely not fair someone like that gets to live such a decent life after snuffing out the life of someone else. The victim deserved so much better, he seems like he was such a lovely person just from what I've heard.

Extra fact about the fist story. One of the DJs was Lori Vallow Daybell's brother. The crazy dooms day mom who took the life of both of her children, than moved to Hawaii with her new husband. His real name is Adam Cox, but he went by Lukas Cox. In fact he’s the DJ saying on camera that he couldn’t believe they got fired. He even wrote a book about the radio station incident where he expresses how unbelievably sad he was when it happened, than proceeds to get the date wrong while talking about how it deeply effected him.

The Luca Magnotta case skeeves me out everytime I hear it. I'm from Montreal, and Ive lived close to where Justin's head was found. I often have to travel around Angrignon Park to get to work. I remember all the news coming out when the schools started receiving body parts. I was in high school at the time and we were all worried the next school to be targeted was ours.
I wasn't even close to Montreal (I'm near Quebec City), and I was also in highschool back then. That was honestly terrifying, I remember it being all over the news, and him being one of the ''most wanted'' on Interpol. The scariest part was when no one knew where he was in my opinion.
I will never understand how someone can just casually leave their doors unlocked. I live in an area with very little crime. Yet the thought of ever leaving my doors unlocked never crosses my mind. I always even check to make sure they're locked.

I'm Canadian and I actually remember that last story playing out on the news when I was a kid. I always check the sender when i receive parcels to make sure it's something I'm expecting or from someone I know. I had forgotten where this habit came from but I'm now reminded it's from a childhood fear of receiving a body part in the mail.
That first story is deeply disturbing. They were taking pleasure in people's suffering and couldn't care less if anyone died. And no some lame ass apology after the fact doesn't count. They never intended anyone to get hurt. Malicious intent was not present, and therefore they did not incur jail time. Individuals have a responsibility to understand all consequences when they undertake a physiologically challenging procedure. The DJs were ignorant, but not culpable for death.

I think the murder of Jung Lin has to be the most disturbing I’ve seen to date. The perp showed pre meditation by naming his alias and his ‘demon’ after characters in a movie, mailing the body parts all over Canada, and having filming equipment set up before hand. He showed that he is incapable of remorse by bragging about how great prison is and how much he’s improved his knowledge and skills there. I’m not an expert but I’d be willing to put down money that if he ever gets out he will at least try to kill again.
And not to mention he was able to get married. He wed the man who executed my 17 year old friend/roommate Kelly. It hurts that murderers can get married when some of their victims weren't afforded that in life.

That’s why no one should ever do anymore updates on Luka Magnotta. He thrives on attention, and that’s why he should never receive one ounce more from anyone. I worked in prisons for many years, and I can assure you that he’s not “living his best life.” He might have some privileges and whatnot, but they’re not fun places to be. Before he committed the murder, he created fan sites to himself and made up fake accounts to comment on them. He also called radio and news stations claiming that he was famous and “dispelling rumors” that he was dating an infamous female Canadian murderer. All this loser has ever wanted was to be in the spotlight. The absolute best thing any of us can do is let him rot in prison, ignored and forgotten. Ignore his social media, don’t ever engage him or update anyone on what he’s doing, and let him go insane knowing that the world moved on and he was left behind to die in obscurity.
The first story is a pure rage material. Home invasion is a constant topic of my nightmares, so I do very much lock my door every time, day or night. Then again, my door is ridiculously strong. Auto-locking, steel reinforced...Even when I accidentally locked myself out with the key still in the inside, it took two locksmiths hours to open the door. And that was with me there to assure they were on the up and up. So a creeper trying no sneak in and invade ? No chance.
I once committed the mortal sin of smoking marijuana while on probation as a teenager. I drank so much water out of fear of an upcoming drug test, my stomach started hurting terribly and I felt the urge to go to the bathroom. It all came out the other end, pure water and it wasn’t from my bladder… Felt great after it came out lol but I did get really sick for a bit.

I had water intoxication once. I was on a historic sailboat on vacation with my grandma and my cousin. The day was extremely hot, there was lots of metal on deck and I was feeling very thirsty. Being, like, 15 back then I had no idea it was a bad idea to drink too much water too fast, so I went down into the dining room and I drank 1,5L of already prepared cold tea and then filled the same bottle with water and drank that too. I wobbled up the ladder to my grandma and told her I wasn't feeling well and then I threw up all over the deck. Was swiftly brought inside but not, like, feverish or hot to the touch or sweating so they (and I) assumed it was a stomach bug as they didn't know how much water/tea I had, only that I walked up and threw up infront of everyone. Only way later I realized that I drank too much water and the throwing up is probably what saved me.
I grew up in Sacramento and was going to high school when the radio contest happened. The news about it was everywhere and has stuck with me since, I think about it often. One of the things I that struck me was when the winner was interviwed on tv and she was talking with the wii right next to her. It felt wrong that a death happened over that console.
The murderer in the third story absolutely has narcissistic personality disorder, NOT borderline. Look at how he checks himself out in the mirror while disposing of that poor man's remains, and the fact that he was arrested in an internet café while reading news articles about the crime he had committed! That's classic narcissism; they feel no remorse for what they've done and, in some cases, try to paint the victim as being "deserving of what they'd gotten". Schizophrenia can be managed with medication, but narcissism cannot.
Narcissists have zero humanity, empathy, or remorse. They should probably be sequestered from the rest of society, but that's not my call. I'd go so far as to say that sociopathy and narcissism are comorbid in a lot of cases.
My ex husband has BPD and so do a few other people I know, they have low self esteem...which is apparently common in people with BPD because they doubt themselves and others all the time. The people I know who have BPD are often very nice and wonderful people and do feel remorse.
The way they knew it was dangerous, and were laughing and joking about them potentially dying shows they were culpable in her death. It’s shocking that they didn’t go to prison. It just goes to show it pays to be famous. Even regionally, with a face to ugly for tv.
I remember the Magnotta incident. I was in high school and that morning everyone was talking about how a dismembered body part was sent to parliament. That was horribly tragic for Jun. RIP 😢

Interesting video - the radio show with actual clips was particularly disturbing. I'm Canadian and live in Halifax - I remember when the sleep watcher was in the news, and have heard the rather disturbing tale of Lucas several times. That was very disturbing then and now.

we learned about the radio water death in my high school radio class. our school had an actual station so we had to learn about all the laws. this incident is the exact reason you can no longer do competition in this way on air anymore.

i grew up listening to 107.9, and i moved out of state in 2015. i was incredibly young at the time of the incident, and never once heard anything about it- it was my favorite radio station because it constantly was playing the newest pop music. when i got back to sacramento a couple years later i was so confused to see if off the air when it had always been my go to. i never actually thought to look into it, though. suffice to say i was quite shocked to hear you talking about them as soon as i started the video!!! it adds a general discomfort to a lot of my fond memories of listening to the show on the drive to school and enjoying the hosts banter. i cannot believe it took them 9 YEARS to get it off the air?? thank you for illuminating a strange part of my life that i never really thought to look into, lazy!

the hold your wee for a wii thing i remember vividly because my parents were one of the people trying to call in as my dad's a pharmacologist and my mom a nurse (one makes the drugs the other deals em out). But yeah they were both acutely aware of how dangerous this was and were calling off the hook. I was young at the time so i didn't really understand it until i was older.
When I heard just now the phrase "Anything can be a poison, it all depends on the dose" I never had heard of it before, but I immediately thought of this case... Pretty interesting how no one wanting to take responsabilities... Luka Magnotta case is very well known, and if the authorities took actions after the kittens videos instead of brushing it off and saying "They're just cats", then Jin's death could have been adverted.
The District Attorney's office declined to press criminal charges. Luckily the family won the wrongful death lawsuit. Those DJs should be behind bars though.
Being born and raised in Sacramento, I was actually working at a Gamestop the day this happened, and when it was reported (this was at the height of the Wii constantly being sold out everywhere), and so we heard about it pretty quickly from our manager. I remember people mostly being confused, because not many people have had of water intoxication, let alone an extremely rapid onset of it. You'll find that most people in Sac are keenly aware of water intoxication to this day, and it's because of that very tragedy. So for what it's worth, she didn't die in vain. If it would have been alcohol then most understand blood levels etc., but because it's water people don't know you can end up washing yourself out. In this case, "don't be water, my friends."
i grew up listening to the end, mostly on the way to school every morning. they had a lot of gimickie talk show segments, one i remember was War of the Roses, that i think was thursdays. they would have a person call in that thought their partner was cheating on them so one of the hosts would call the person's partner / spouse saying they had won a free spa weekend for two or free bouquet of roses ( hence the name as that was the original bait ) & if the partner / spouse sent it to the original caller, that was supposed to be proof they were NOT cheating, but often times they would give the name & address of the other person-- WITH the original caller on the line to hear this. it obviously wasn't as dangerous as the Hold Your Wee for a Wii contest but those hosts often did outrageous stuff that could end very, very badly. i remember hearing about this contest as they were trying to hype it up & telling my mom that i wanted to enter b/c i'm a major water drinker. my mom was a nurse at the time & told me all about water poisoning & that it was not going to end well. she was right.

While not a radio production major, I'm a tv video production major and radio is very often discussed in my classes and the first story has been widely discussed and everyone is in agreement that it was a situation that absolutely shouldn't have happened. There's often so many hoops and boundaries as well as higher ups you need to go through in order to do game shows/events like that on the radio so multiple people probably had to sign off on this and be ok with it. So many more people should have been fired and sued in this instance. My heart goes out to the family because that should not have been able to happen at all if proper research and measures were actually taken.

The radio hosts are murderers. Literally got certified nurses and other callers telling them the contestants were in danger - KNEW about what happened to the college kid - and the contestants were complaining about pains and such, and still went on with the contest. They should be in prison, not just casually working elsewhere

Have you never listened to morning radio? Those kind-of djs don't give a damn about anyone but themselves. Howard Stern had a guy frequently come on the show he called "Gary the Retard". To say morals are few and far between in morning radio is an understatement.
Even though i forgot about it, I remember this story after hearing it and thought they faced severe civil suits, man slaughter charges, and were black balled from radio jobs- them having basically zero punishment disturbs me.
Shame there isn't a reddit group somewhere who wants to find a LEGAL way to remind them daily of what harm they've done. The indifference in their voice while talking about the event afterwards is almost more disturbing than the incident itself.

I’ve known about the radio station story for years but I still tear up every time I hear it. The thought of a mom going through so much pain and then dying only because she wanted to win something nice for her kids that they probably really wanted. It’s so sad.

Yes! It's a genuinely heartbreaking story of a mom who genuinely wanted to do right by her kids and didn't see the danger they were getting into, and I can only imagine how the kids felt (and probably continue to feel) knowing that their mom died needlessly for a stupid gaming system. Do they feel a sense of guilt or culpability even today, as kids in these situations often do? Did it destroy their love of games, as I can imagine it might for me? I feel incredibly sad whenever I'm reminded of it.

Okay, I’d heard of the first one…but did not realize that the hosts treated it so flippantly. Making light of people possibly dying, disregarding medical professionals saying how dangerous it was, and then acting as though they had gotten the short end of the stick by being fired. They deserve to have been put in prison. They essentially killed that poor woman. I’m thoroughly disgusted by them and the fact that they were able to just walk away from it without any repercussions whatsoever.

The first story is even sadder than I remembered; I had always been under the impression that the victim had been a young girl who drank a jug of water in one go, won the Wii, and later passed away, but to know that Jennifer went through several hours of pain along with other people while the DJs laughed and mocked them, drank 9 liters of water trying to get the top prize for her kids, and that it all could've been avoided because the DJs knew of a similar case *AND* were warned by their listeners... Those three should've faced legal consequences.

Jun Lin. This is the first time I see a documentary kind of about his murder that approached it from the victim’s side rather than the murdered.
I had never seen so many time a photo of him and I think you did a great job and making your public remember his face and not the other’s.
Yet his killer is still very much enjoying his life, despite the fact that at the time of the arrest....he was hunting for more victims at an Internet cafe.

Oh my god, I work in EMS and that radio show audio is gonna haunt me forever. Jennifer should have stopped drinking after the pain started, but at a certain point when she started losing her mental acuity, the hosts became responsible for her condition. They should have immediately gotten her help, but they just laughed.

He gives "hungry bottom" type of energy, so they're not about to off a constant source of...stimulation. I'm sure he knows how to survive in such an environment as that. He likely even enjoys it. So the question here is simple... *Are you okay with innocent people dying so long as people like Luca die also?*
If so, would you still be okay with that if _you_ had to be one of those innocent people? Consider that one carefully.
The problem with death as a punishment is that it cannot be undone. You can falsely sentence someone to life imprisonment, later realise your mistake, and at least attempt to compensate the innocent for the time they wrongly spent behind bars. If you kill somebody you simply cannot take that back. Death is absolute and there is NO recourse at all.
Also, an a side-note, an inmate on death row actually costs the tax payer _more_ than an inmate in life imprisonment does. The death penalty is actually surprisingly costly to the tax payer. Just saying.
I have BPD and schizophrenia. That man using those as an excuse for the disgusting things he did is horrible. Mental illness doesn't make you kill people or animals. I'm glad he actually faced consequences. It's definitely not fair someone like that gets to live such a decent life after snuffing out the life of someone else. The victim deserved so much better, he seems like he was such a lovely person just from what I've heard.
Yeah my brother had schizophrenia. One time he angrily threw something at a wall but I'm pretty sure that was the alcoholism. Mostly it just made him hide in his room from the world

People tend to brush off cruelty to animals, especially in childhood as being a rite of passage, or somehow acceptable. In my experience as a Psych PHD it rarely ends there. These individuals are dangerous to society in a myriad of ways. Not least, that they are immense cowards.

I’ve heard about the wee for a wii story before and always felt bad for the hosts because I was under the impression they had no idea they were doing something harmful. Now hearing this, I’m baffled at their flippant response to callers warning them of the danger, AND that they were even, to some extent, aware of a hydro-toxicity case but decided to press on. How could they not feel responsible for keeping the contestants safe? I can’t believe they performed such mental gymnastics to avoid the truth of the danger right in front of them, and to shrug off responsibility. Horrible

Extra fact about the fist story. One of the DJs was Lori Vallow Daybell's brother. The crazy dooms day mom who took the life of both of her children, than moved to Hawaii with her new husband. His real name is Adam Cox, but he went by Lukas Cox. In fact he’s the DJ saying on camera that he couldn’t believe they got fired. He even wrote a book about the radio station incident where he expresses how unbelievably sad he was when it happened, than proceeds to get the date wrong while talking about how it deeply effected him.
So he is a total jerk off all around.

The Luca Magnotta case skeeves me out everytime I hear it. I'm from Montreal, and Ive lived close to where Justin's head was found. I often have to travel around Angrignon Park to get to work. I remember all the news coming out when the schools started receiving body parts. I was in high school at the time and we were all worried the next school to be targeted was ours.
I wasn't even close to Montreal (I'm near Quebec City), and I was also in highschool back then. That was honestly terrifying, I remember it being all over the news, and him being one of the ''most wanted'' on Interpol. The scariest part was when no one knew where he was in my opinion.
I will never understand how someone can just casually leave their doors unlocked. I live in an area with very little crime. Yet the thought of ever leaving my doors unlocked never crosses my mind. I always even check to make sure they're locked.
My aunt & uncle in Maine didn't have a key to their house for 20 years. People weren't always bombarded with everything that happens everywhere.

I'm Canadian and I actually remember that last story playing out on the news when I was a kid.
I always check the sender when i receive parcels to make sure it's something I'm expecting or from someone I know. I had forgotten where this habit came from but I'm now reminded it's from a childhood fear of receiving a body part in the mail.
That first story is deeply disturbing. They were taking pleasure in people's suffering and couldn't care less if anyone died. And no some lame ass apology after the fact doesn't count.

They never intended anyone to get hurt. Malicious intent was not present, and therefore they did not incur jail time. Individuals have a responsibility to understand all consequences when they undertake a physiologically challenging procedure. The DJs were ignorant, but not culpable for death.

I think the murder of Jung Lin has to be the most disturbing I’ve seen to date.
The perp showed pre meditation by naming his alias and his ‘demon’ after characters in a movie, mailing the body parts all over Canada, and having filming equipment set up before hand.
He showed that he is incapable of remorse by bragging about how great prison is and how much he’s improved his knowledge and skills there.
I’m not an expert but I’d be willing to put down money that if he ever gets out he will at least try to kill again.

I worked in prisons for many years, and I can assure you that he’s not “living his best life.” He might have some privileges and whatnot, but they’re not fun places to be. Before he committed the murder, he created fan sites to himself and made up fake accounts to comment on them. He also called radio and news stations claiming that he was famous and “dispelling rumors” that he was dating an infamous female Canadian murderer. All this loser has ever wanted was to be in the spotlight. The absolute best thing any of us can do is let him rot in prison, ignored and forgotten. Ignore his social media, don’t ever engage him or update anyone on what he’s doing, and let him go insane knowing that the world moved on and he was left behind to die in obscurity.

I ended up with water intoxication in 2018. I had to go for a drug test, and I was forcing myself to chug water... I ended up dizzy, a horrific headache, etc. Scared the hell out of me.

It's been crazy for my family, too. Death in family right after cancer diagnosis of the same person, their eldest child getting cancer diagnosis three days after their death, multiple outages due to storms and flooding, financial troubles, health issues, etc. It seems like this year is either amazing or terrible for people. :(

Home invasion is a constant topic of my nightmares, so I do very much lock my door every time, day or night.
Then again, my door is ridiculously strong. Auto-locking, steel reinforced...Even when I accidentally locked myself out with the key still in the inside, it took two locksmiths hours to open the door. And that was with me there to assure they were on the up and up. So a creeper trying no sneak in and invade ? No chance.
I once committed the mortal sin of smoking marijuana while on probation as a teenager. I drank so much water out of fear of an upcoming drug test, my stomach started hurting terribly and I felt the urge to go to the bathroom. It all came out the other end, pure water and it wasn’t from my bladder…

I had water intoxication once. I was on a historic sailboat on vacation with my grandma and my cousin. The day was extremely hot, there was lots of metal on deck and I was feeling very thirsty. Being, like, 15 back then I had no idea it was a bad idea to drink too much water too fast, so I went down into the dining room and I drank 1,5L of already prepared cold tea and then filled the same bottle with water and drank that too. I wobbled up the ladder to my grandma and told her I wasn't feeling well and then I threw up all over the deck. Was swiftly brought inside but not, like, feverish or hot to the touch or sweating so they (and I) assumed it was a stomach bug as they didn't know how much water/tea I had, only that I walked up and threw up infront of everyone. Only way later I realized that I drank too much water and the throwing up is probably what saved me.

I grew up in Sacramento and was going to high school when the radio contest happened. The news about it was everywhere and has stuck with me since, I think about it often. One of the things I that struck me was when the winner was interviwed on tv and she was talking with the wii right next to her. It felt wrong that a death happened over that console.
The murderer in the third story absolutely has narcissistic personality disorder, NOT borderline. Look at how he checks himself out in the mirror while disposing of that poor man's remains, and the fact that he was arrested in an internet café while reading news articles about the crime he had committed! That's classic narcissism; they feel no remorse for what they've done and, in some cases, try to paint the victim as being "deserving of what they'd gotten".
Schizophrenia can be managed with medication, but narcissism cannot.
Narcissists have zero humanity, empathy, or remorse. They should probably be sequestered from the rest of society, but that's not my call. I'd go so far as to say that sociopathy and narcissism are comorbid in a lot of cases.
The fucker has a better life in prison than I do out of it.
My ex husband has BPD and so do a few other people I know, they have low self esteem...which is apparently common in people with BPD because they doubt themselves and others all the time. The people I know who have BPD are often very nice and wonderful people and do feel remorse.
The way they knew it was dangerous, and were laughing and joking about them potentially dying shows they were culpable in her death.

Interesting video - the radio show with actual clips was particularly disturbing. I'm Canadian and live in Halifax - I remember when the sleep watcher was in the news, and have heard the rather disturbing tale of Lucas several times. That was very disturbing then and now.

we learned about the radio water death in my high school radio class. our school had an actual station so we had to learn about all the laws. this incident is the exact reason you can no longer do competition in this way on air anymore.

i grew up listening to 107.9, and i moved out of state in 2015. i was incredibly young at the time of the incident, and never once heard anything about it- it was my favorite radio station because it constantly was playing the newest pop music. when i got back to sacramento a couple years later i was so confused to see if off the air when it had always been my go to. i never actually thought to look into it, though. suffice to say i was quite shocked to hear you talking about them as soon as i started the video!!! it adds a general discomfort to a lot of my fond memories of listening to the show on the drive to school and enjoying the hosts banter. i cannot believe it took them 9 YEARS to get it off the air?? thank you for illuminating a strange part of my life that i never really thought to look into, lazy!

the hold your wee for a wii thing i remember vividly because my parents were one of the people trying to call in as my dad's a pharmacologist and my mom a nurse (one makes the drugs the other deals em out). But yeah they were both acutely aware of how dangerous this was and were calling off the hook. I was young at the time so i didn't really understand it until i was older.

The District Attorney's office declined to press criminal charges. Luckily the family won the wrongful death lawsuit. Those DJs should be behind bars though.
Being born and raised in Sacramento, I was actually working at a Gamestop the day this happened, and when it was reported (this was at the height of the Wii constantly being sold out everywhere), and so we heard about it pretty quickly from our manager. I remember people mostly being confused, because not many people have had of water intoxication, let alone an extremely rapid onset of it. You'll find that most people in Sac are keenly aware of water intoxication to this day, and it's because of that very tragedy. So for what it's worth, she didn't die in vain.
If it would have been alcohol then most understand blood levels etc., but because it's water people don't know you can end up washing yourself out. In this case, "don't be water, my friends."
i grew up listening to the end, mostly on the way to school every morning. they had a lot of gimickie talk show segments, one i remember was War of the Roses, that i think was thursdays. they would have a person call in that thought their partner was cheating on them so one of the hosts would call the person's partner / spouse saying they had won a free spa weekend for two or free bouquet of roses ( hence the name as that was the original bait ) & if the partner / spouse sent it to the original caller, that was supposed to be proof they were NOT cheating, but often times they would give the name & address of the other person-- WITH the original caller on the line to hear this.
it obviously wasn't as dangerous as the Hold Your Wee for a Wii contest but those hosts often did outrageous stuff that could end very, very badly. i remember hearing about this contest as they were trying to hype it up & telling my mom that i wanted to enter b/c i'm a major water drinker. my mom was a nurse at the time & told me all about water poisoning & that it was not going to end well.
she was right.

The employees are callous pricks. And they really tried to sue after being responsible for someone's death? Another one to add to the list.
It wasn't the DJs faults. It was the station managers and lawyers. Also the contestants.
While not a radio production major, I'm a tv video production major and radio is very often discussed in my classes and the first story has been widely discussed and everyone is in agreement that it was a situation that absolutely shouldn't have happened. There's often so many hoops and boundaries as well as higher ups you need to go through in order to do game shows/events like that on the radio so multiple people probably had to sign off on this and be ok with it. So many more people should have been fired and sued in this instance. My heart goes out to the family because that should not have been able to happen at all if proper research and measures were actually taken.
The fact that they knew it could be deadly, but only seemed sad about losing their jobs. Those children lost a MOTHER! Absolutely sick.

I remember when a classmate in junior year Human Body Systems called me a liar when I was talking about water intoxication. She said that we would constantly be intoxicated because we have water in our bodies so there's no such thing as drinking too much water...
She wanted to be a nurse 🥴
