- "Rugged" doesnt even begin to describe Stampede Pass. The legendary mainline of the Northern Pacific Railroad is back in action following a decade of slumber. Now it is the Burlington Northern Santa Fe taking on the 2.2% grades over the Cascades with Dash-9s and SD-40s. Machines Of Iron offers you a first look as BNSF gets its footing on the line with new signaling and experimental DPU trains. The Return of Stampede Pass brings you all the grandeur of this magnificent engineering achievement.
I remember seen this and other train videos like this on the RFD TV channel. I really miss that videos: the BNSF Stocktown Tower, the Rio Grande route, the Southern Pacific Tennesse Pass, the Union Pacific in Modesto CA... a lot of them. Greetings from Ciudad Juarez, Mexico✌
You still buy our DVDs of all these shows at www.machinesofiron.net
I watch this back in 2005 on RFD-TV
I wish BNSF could paint some Heritage Units
I was there. I did all the power connections from the power company to the switching gear on the BN. I worked with Mike, their electrical engineer and was there when they reopened the line
Should have kept the BN and ATSF units unpatched as multiple heritage units
Now if only the Burlington Northern would come back, and free from the clutches of that greedy old coot in Nebraska. I sure miss Cascade Green. It came into being shortly before I did, and it was all I knew in my youth, growing up as a fourth generation Western Washingtonian. I'd be happy if we could see more of the other OG liveries - NP, SP&S, CB&Q... And for crying out loud, bring back the Warbonnets and Bluebonnets! The Omaha Orange has been played out to death at this point.
Stampede Pass was the NP's crossing of the Cascades, Snoqualme Pass is a bit farther to the north, and it was MILW's crossing of the Cascades.
At around 2:20, the milepost marker has a sign that says "test mile". I'm curious of what that sign means.
A test mile is a actual 100% measured mile. There is a sign at both ends of it for a engineer to check his counter on the control stand to see if the counter for that locomotive is accurate or not. Counters can be off at times so using the measured mile lets the engineer know how off it is and adjust to it per trip.
God I miss the good old days of the BN, wish the BN and the ATSF are still two separate railroad companies today!
I miss those box-nosed locos with green and white. But accept updates with orange reminding me of Milwaukee Road. Everything changes.😪
Burlington Northern Changes Too Much!
Stampede Pass, is a mountain pass through the Cascade Range just south of Snoqualmie Pass in Washington. (to quote Wikipedia)
i remember 4x4ing, hiking, or hunting along the line Auburn to the East side .. awesome area
Great video. Love the SD40-2s Great Locomotives!
1:10 - awesome EMD 16-645 sound!
I wish they didnt patch, repaint or sell those BN and ATSF engines
Dont worry some of them are still in service
can you show the whole video please
God I miss it when it was BN who ruled the railroads in the US instead of BNSF
this is sick, i wanna drive a bnsf through stampede pass so bad
Been there man! It was an honor to plow snow along the MILW!
Wow Amazing Scenery with the SD 40s I miss the old BN Day's with Conrail!!
you & me both!!!
so do I so do i
Milwaukee Rail had a big rail shop in the port of Tacoma (now a container terminal) where they repaired box cars and Locomotives. I think it closed around 1975
I hope the cascade green and the BNSF drops the SF.
