The sun goes off in many directions and could hurt your eyes with glasses. They have ones that one could clip sunglasses in front of them. Great strawberry planting tips.... The worms are virtually gone from the soils near me. They used to be in every shovel into the ground. Worms also walk into bodies of water in rain while bugs are no longer on the surface of the waters, and are not available for the birds.
Strawberries are heavy feeders. I have seen the composting towers/drums with strawberries growing out of the slots and a perforated 4' pipe placed vertical in the center. This is filled with compost material to be broken down and allow the red wiggler variety of worms to feed in the tower. Great results!
Another great video, Petrina! Thank you for all the tips. A couple of questions? 1. What do you mean by perenialize? How do you do that? 2. Will you leave the strawberry plants in your green stalk? Thank you in advance!
Thank you for another great video with equally great tips! Questions: 1. What is and how do you perenialize strawberries? 2. Do you leave them in the green stalk after they stop producing? If not, where and how do you transplant? Thank you in advance!
Perennialize just means to keep them alive for years rather than annuals. I’m going to do a follow up when it’s time but basically I cut all the leaves off, cover it with thick mulch and move them to a super shady spot. I do leave them in the greenstalk while they wait for the next fruiting season.
I’ve just discovered your channel and thought we aren’t in the same zone or climate, I’m learning so much from you. Definitely trying your strawberry tips this year. Happy growing!
Miss P, you should consider a trip to the Plant City/ Dover area. Around the last of Oct. Parksdale farms sells plants at their produce market. I used to buy plants from them and send them to my mother in Ft. Myers every year.
I'm on the hunt for Brillance Berries now. I bought my strawberries at the big box store too; it's not really producing much at all. When I do find them, I will plant like you said. Looking forward to my future strawberries. Thanks for all the info.
Although, it's too late now, we buy bare root strawberries from our local nursery in Oct/Nov. Cost was 1$ per plant. I called around to local nurseries until I found one that carries them.
As you know Im a row and in ground kinda guy. After one of.my.customers gave me several nice planter pots i have ventured out and planted some tomatoes, bell peppers, banana peppers, jalapeno, and have also salvaged several flower bushes she had gave up on. I grow my strawberries in with my asparagus as cream companion plants. Now that I ventured out Im thinking about investing in a green stalk. That rotary system has got me think incould elevate it about two feet and grow herbs. Elevation just to reduce crouching 😂. Funny thing is I just got done watering my strawberries and asparagus. Already getting some nice asparagus and as you mentioned small strawberries. Guess I need to go to plant city and find some better plants.
My grandfather used to make us fruit roll-up 's in a really old dehydrator. I remember he rolled them up in Saran wrap for us. I don't remember parchment paper though.
Hey there, new suscriber here in Cholula México, (Yes it totally works) puré 100%compost or worm castings...I do that with most of My plants...specially tomatoes ...glad i found your channel... Bendiciones😊
I have been attempting to grow strawberries and going to try again with the tips you have provided. Can't afford fresh produce at the grocery store with this last year of inflation.refusing to give up in hopes to grown our own.
Good info, thanks, I have some that look cracked and dried out, will treat them, I have noticed that roly poly bugs are the ones chewing holes in mine, so as soon as they start to ripen, I'm placing them up on the leaves off the ground, seems to help
Really informative video. Im also in FL, just planted a new Greenstalk with strawberries. Appreciate all your great tips! One question, do you mulch the strawberries in the Greenstalk?
I usually separate the tiers and lay them where my sprinklers will cover them. I’ve also used microsprayers hooked to a hose and timer to the outdoor spigot
Thank you for another great video. I have been wanting to grow strawberries for some time now, your video has given me the final incentive I need, But can you tell me where I can get some "Florida Brilliant" strawberries to grow.
I started using only compost in the top half of my grow bags and all my plants have been doing fantastic, which really surprised me. What area of FL are you in? I’m in the panhandle and we’ve been getting torrential rains and tornado watches/warnings AT LEAST once a week. I haven’t had to water much of anything in months, it’s insane! That being said, do you have any tips on sowing wildflower seeds? I’ve sewed soooo many times now on the edge of my swale but they keep getting washed away 😅
I’m in Spring Hill, south of Ocala. Most wildflowers need light to germinate so they need to be surface sown. That being said, too much rain could wash them away. Try creating little furrows or divots for the seeds to rest in and hopefully the rains won’t wash them away. Just be careful not to cover them with soil.
It’s not too late. They produce all winter long so you can definitely still grow them. If you want to catch up, try finding live plants versus bare roots
New follower here, great videos! Being in central Florida, I was thinking of a hoop house and using a bug screen cloth to keep the the bugs out. Planning on green beans, cabbage, carrots, strawberries, cucumbers, and onions. Any thoughts or suggestions for this idea? Thanks
That’s an idea but I haven’t tried a bug screen before. All that sounds like great things to plant but things like the cabbage carrots and strawberries would be best to wait till fall. It’s a bit too hot for them now.
@@HomegrownFloridaZ9aif using bare root, when should they be planted? I’ve been struggling trying to find good info on growing them here, in 10b, so I’m glad you did this one today. I have big box store ones growing now too but not very productive like you said. You’d think there would be so much info out there on how to grow them here being that strawberries are a huge crop for FL, but yet little to no info anywhere. I couldn’t even find much on which varieties! I thought we were supposed to grow everbearing 🤷🏼♀️ So thank you!
Lol, that’s so true. Try to have your bare roots by October. September might work too but it’s still a bit hot so give them lots of water and shade if you do.

I’ve seen those too. I’ve considered getting one but I haven’t yet.
If you have too many strawberries... I'll take them ;D

Oh my gosh. I didn’t know they sold plants. That would be awesome!

Great tip!
Whitwam organics in Tampa carries them. You just have to order quickly because they sell out FAST

I’m with you on the crouching. My back definitely thanks me daily for those planters.

I’ll give that a try. Maybe it will work better than the paper.
Great video! I’m gonna try the compost for my strawberries! :-)
Thanks so much!
Good time, as always. Thanks again.
You bet 💚
Anything in compost grows well. I have better luck throwing seeds, I can not grow any other way in my compost bin and "voila:! They'll sprout❤
Haha! It’s a good trick for stubborn seeds

Thanks for the sub! Im definitely planting in straight compost next year. It worked beautifully this year
Thanks for sharing 💜 I have tried strawberries for a few years, and I'm still trying, lol!
Never give up! I went 5 years for melons and have finally made some progress

Produce is so expensive these days 😩 My garden has provided such a huge savings for us.

I feel like every bug in the garden loves strawberries 🤦♀️
You answered my question few minutes in the video 😊 I live central Florida and would love to find june berries
Glad I could help! Check out Berries Unlimited or MIGardener next fall
Really informative video. Im also in FL, just planted a new Greenstalk with strawberries. Appreciate all your great tips! One question, do you mulch the strawberries in the Greenstalk?
I do since we have so much evaporation here from the heat but I know a lot of people that skip this step
Another great video, full of concrete recommendations.
Glad you like them!
I had a terrible times with thrips this year. I sprayed captain Jack dead bug killer. It seems to help
That’s the spinosad that I use. I like it a lot
Thanks for all the great tips!
You are so welcome!
Thanks for the tips.
Happy to help!
Were you able to successfully perennialize those strawberry plants?
Only about 30% because I got an infestation of jumping worms in the container they were in. Normally I get closer to a 50-60% rate.
can you provide us with where you buy your Florida Brilliance Strawberry plants for bareroot from?
I actually got them locally from a Facebook marketplace ad. I do believe Whitwam organics does sell them though.
Thank You
Have you seen the new "basket" embossed green stalks? They are so pretty. I already have three green stalks planters.....😬 Somebody stop me
No I haven’t. I’ll check it out
If you go on vacation how do you water them? Thanks for the excellent video 🙏

😤 I have been real good at talking myself out of the green stalk investment. Don’t see how I can’t dive in now🤑 ❤ You’re a bad influence!
🤣🤣🤣 I’m sorry lol
Get one when they're on sale,, they're great!
Where can we find June berries ????

What Spinosaid do you use? Is it in your amazon store under a different name or spelling?
It’s called Bonide Captain Jacks Dead Brew in my Amazon store. The active ingredient is Spinosad. Sorry for the confusion.
@@HomegrownFloridaZ9a Thanks, just added it to my cart for next garden order.
do you by any chance have a link to that planter? if so, can you reply to this comment with it? thank you!
They just gave me a new link. Let me know if you have any trouble with it. lnk.rise-ai.com/rP63qWdcpbMfDVb
I tried 3 years with no success. I gave up.
I've been there! It's so worth it once you get them going. I think Promix soil helped me make it happen
spinosad (spin - o - said) not cide 😂
Lol thanks
