Really nice podcast, in many I agree with Jason that user test doesn't give you true answers, and only launching a product to the market does. However, I also want to push back a little. While user testing doesn't give a completely true answer, they do give us an answer on what is plausible and what is not. So let's take Jason's analogy with user testing and simulations; There is a reason why we run simulations in other fields e.g. astrophysics, even though they might not fully reflect reality, the simulations give us plausible answers we can work with. Plausible answers let us know what might be worthwhile to ship to market and do a real market test. You also keep in mind, that shipping Feature A on the market means you don't have the resources to test Feature B until Feature A is shipped. Increasing the probability of providing value to the customer on the first shipping might be worthwhile. But as Jason mentioned, it all depends on whether your team is also users of your own product. With that being said, I believe the key is to keep the testing lean and not trying to test extensively. The testing doesn't have to be without a shadow of a doubt. You don't need to test with X amount of user, just see what you can scramble together in a short time and test it with those people. I often test with fewer people than what it is generally adviced (and if told that in a job interview, I would never get the job), but it helps me moving forward much faster. A point from Jason that I fully agree with, is that the design industry has become an industry for "cookie-cutters". A lot of companies are adopting new "hot" methods without asking why. I'm not talking about the general WHY which can read in the textbook (e.g. it speeds up the process, cost less etc.), but the WHY such as "we are this type of company, so it makes sense for us to do that". A lot of companies are adopting new methods because of all the other companies are doing it, and because it is just easier to adopt instead of developing your own methodology that works particularly for you. I see a lot of job postings from big companies such as " as a UX designer you understand the latest trends in your field". It just tells me that those people don't really understand what they are doing.
Agree with you esp the part where we dont need to "reedit/choose and spend many many time doing public research while in the end the first idea was ady great, ppl only see the results they dont care about the process, if they look at it, they like it they'll take it, most of the ppl are like that in my opinion. I went to college for foundation in art and design, the lecturer always wants us to improvise to change, keep on changing, in the end, I cant even see what I wanted to see/express originally, and its ugly urgh

I decide my designs quite fast, and I sketch quite fast, but i always hold back for a few days so my lecturer wont think that i simply did it.
