  • This episode profiles four California artists who make motherhood a part of their art: Kenyatta A.C. Hinkle, Andrea Chung, Rebecca Campbell and Tanya Aguiñiga. There's a persisting assumption in contemporary art circles that you can't be a good artist and good mother both. But these artists are working to shatter this cliché, juggling demands of career and family and finding inspiring ways to explore the maternal in their art.

I truly appreciate this documentary. I'm an artist pregnant with my first child. Currently working my main day job as an art teacher and working towards making a living from my art. This film gives me hope of seeing motherhood as an enriching supplement to my career, not an obstacle. Thank you for allowing us artist moms to be seen. I hope my child can grow see me flourish in creativity!

I love this so much. I'm in my late 20s and am being told my time is running out to "make it" as an artist/writer, in part because one day I could have a child and my life will be completely commandeered. But seeing these women who have not only continued to create in motherhood but *be inspired by it* is immensely reassuring. I wish more women were told this story, and given this advice.

Agreed! Late 20's as well and experiencing my first pregnancy. I'm glad I at least had my entire 20's to develop my skills and build my artist persona. At the age of 29, I feel like I'm in my very prime of becoming a professional artist. No one else can tell you otherwise! And I've always wanted to be a mom just before I turned 30. The timing couldn't have been any better for me. Good luck on your endeavors. Your timing is in your own hands, you can create against all odds.

Interesting. I can think of many more examples of the theme of motherhood being explored in art compared to the theme of fatherhood.

This art represents a lot of the philosophies that I find give womanhood a bizarre ugliness. Pride that separates, woman as object, Self-absorption, turmoil, rejection of the good, selective blindness, all these taint the beauty of women and unfortunately there is so much art that expresses this ugliness.
