      @@BelowthePlains he said what I was going to. I know where there's a lot of old bottles from the 1890's to the 1930's buried but they're not in their original locations as the original sites were dug out. 1 to put in a new road and the other to redo a road that kept failing because it was paved over topsoil instead of gravel. The one from the new road is an area about 300' x 100' and about 7' deep and I don't think a person could dig even 1' without hitting bottles or other items. I not only ran out of room for any more bottles but have since had back surgery and can no longer do it.

      Just stumbled upon your videos and have been binge watching for hours! I agree with what the other person here said regarding your displaying the finds on the screen while you are digging them up. I really like and appreciate that as well! Great feature to the videos. Just curious if you get to keep all of the things you dig up or are they returned to the owners of the properties that you dig on? Love your videos because I absolutely love old stuff and history! Fantastic job!

    • @BelowthePlains
      @BelowthePlains  Год назад +2

      thanks! we really appreciate the kind words! and what i meant by probing is that we have these capital "T" shaped rods that we use to poke into the ground. they are about 4.5 feet long and we just go up and down the lot in rows until we hit a pit. the pit has a very distinct feel. you may not always hit glass, but a tell tale sign of probing into a pit is you will feel a hard layer on top, and then about a foot down you will feel/hear a crunch, and them below that you will feel layers and the ground will be much softer than the undisturbed ground.. the crunch up top is a layer of ash, that they would put on the pit before they covered it with dirt. this would help with breaking down the waste, which made the ground more stable above, and ppl wouldnt fall thru.. and they would throw ash down the pit at intervals when the pit started to smell bad.. again this would help break things down and make them not smell as bad. these layers of ash are the best sign of a pit.. and sometimes you will feel glass.. and if theres a lot of bottles down there, then you will eventually hit one and it has a unique "ting" sound to it... but sometimes you just wont hit a bottle, even if there are a ton in there.. the rod will slide past it..
      well hope that answered your question
      thanks for watching and commenting!

      yeah i asked tom, and he said he goes to a site called sha.org its like an online archive that shows you all sorts of historic documents.. you could also try loc.gov which is a great source for historic documents.. but you are just gonna have to use the search bar and browse around. i think he said he found those bottle patents by typing in "1906 catalog" and then you just go thru and kinda browse for what youre looking for. i wasnt 100% sure what he typed in but i know he put in "1906" and then some other stuff.. i would just try a few keywords like "bottle" or "patent" ..sorry i cant be more helpful. thats kinda tom's thing, doing the research and i just make the videos and run the channel. good luck! if you have any more questions you could probably ask tom directly if you added us on facebook. its just below the plains on FB, and if you direct message him over there, he should get back to you within a day or two. thanks for watching!!
