      use house of kolor marbilzer(you just use surran wrap before it dries to get the effect) silver works best since you can candy it to almost any color you want. I get it in 4oz ready to spray since house of kolor paint isn't cheap but thats all you need anyways for a guitar body. also you must use house of kolor SG100 over the marbilzer if you candy it, if you don't the candy paint will eat it. also you can download all the "how to" for ea house of kolor paint you use. Thats what I use but you can use any method or other companies, thought I would try to help out tcpglobal.com/pages/search-results-page?q=house+of+kolor+marblizer also they sell on eBay

    I just redid my Charvel very similar but I had to spot some base coat in and its black. You are absolutely correct about using all the different grits its way over doing it. I level my clear with 600 Grit. Then I went on to use 1000 Grit then finishing with 1500 grit and achieved the same. Remember be careful you can always re add clear, If you have a custom paint job it may be tough to repair. Also and you are not familiar with using drills and buffers do this all by hand. Nice Job.

    Wow! And may I add, finally! Someone that can cut through the b.s and show a few simple steps yet keep the beginner safe from their own self. I say try on an old guitar you don't care to ruin. Lol! My problem isn't so much steps as much as it is too many steps and my brain cannot hang so if I try it the other ways I get lost in which step I was in. Can't focus and have some brain trauma so it's nice to find this tutorial. God bless ya for the help cause I was at wit's end.

    Thanks for your videos and tip on soap in the wet sand water.
    Back to the grit thing. I think htat using 400 is too course to knock down the orange peel in clear. Would take too ong with 2000 to correct the scratches form 400. Anywho I use 1000 then 1500 then 2000 and then a use drill with Meguiars polish (but any name brand is OK like you say), then carnuba or finish wax. The 1000 grit seems to take out orange peel without deep scratching like 600 or lower.

  • @MillsCustomGuitars1

    It all depends on the paintjob, the clear you're using, and how thick you choose to apply the coats. I think for this one, I ended up using 3 whole cans, the most clear I've ever used on a single body, it was ridiculous. But there were so many layers that needed to be sealed one on top of the other. Usually for a solid color with minimal orange peel, I can get away with just one can. But nowadays I'm using a spray gun, not cans. Same clear coat though.

It would be awesome to put all this info together in one refinishing video; prep, color and clear-coat a poly-finish body. How many coats, how long to dry, which types of paint, etc. Would love to see this MCG style \m/

    When reprinting a guitar do you need to let the lacquer harden before wet sanding or do you do it after your last coat and then let it harden?

  • @MillsCustomGuitars1
    @MillsCustomGuitars1  11 лет назад

    I use Deft nitrocellulose lacquer. It goes on thin and even, very glossy and very hard. Dries fast, and polishes well. You can buy spray cans at the Home Depot, they're around $5 a can.

  • @MillsCustomGuitars1

    How much I use depends on the finish. Some finishes like marbling needs 2 or 3 times the lacquer that a plain finish needs. And I don't measure in coats because I use really heavy coats, so I could do the job in 5 coats when someone else would need 10. I measure in cans. I would say for the smallest rack tom, you will need at least 2 cans. 3 for the second tom, maybe 5 for the floor tom, and probably 8 on the kick. If you can get a spray gun and do it that way, I suggest you do.

  • @ivanemmanuel9292
    @ivanemmanuel9292 7 лет назад +1

    Great Video! How long did you let the guitar cure after the lacquer went on, before you could wet sand and polish? Thanks!

  • @MillsCustomGuitars1
    @MillsCustomGuitars1  10 лет назад

    For the satin, use gloss Rustoleum 2x coverage. It has a finer orange peel, then go over the whole body with #0000 steel wool to make it flat looking. If it's too flat, then lightly polish it up to your liking. If it's not flat enough, then use #000 steel wool. As for the natural finish, you can use a clear polyurethane brush on lacquer, it might leave a slightly amber tint though, or use Deft clear coat.

  • @onzkicg
    @onzkicg 7 лет назад

    Thanks for posting. I have an old 80's Aria Pro Electric guitar- lots of dings at the wood so I attempted to smoothen it last night. I made a serious mistake of not watching videos like this before I started my own wet sanding.. I was only using grit 1000 and was so confident because I thought it won't do any harm in finish- bu alas, it did removed the existing gloss and left me sandpaper hairlines & swirls. I tried putting car cleaning compound afterwards (Meguire Ultimate compound) but the scratches are still visible. I'm glad I started at the neck & back side, and , and not the front. That's the only move i did that I think was ok :) Should I restart wet sanding it again at rougher grit, say 800 to remove the scratches made by grit 1K?

    Ok, thanks. I just wasn't using enough clear coat. But I am going to paint my guitar a metallic blue like you did for one of your friends in your other video, but I think I am going to use actual paint and a spray gun instead of that spray paint for more protection and shine. • @alessandrogoggio

    Very very nice work and tips. You should get a rupes bigfoot polisher... the small one. It totally polish faster and better than anything I've tried before buying that little mean machine. It disperses heat very well and it's harder to burn the paint and it doesn't leave holograms or swirls in the clear. (The guitar i made was really dark and it was a mirror under light from any angle) Thank you for your video and keep painting!

    You will notice swirl patterns and scratches in the surface with 400 grit. If you want a matte finish, I would would level it out with 400 grit, then take some #0000 steel wool to the finish. It wont leave noticeable swirl marks but it will give you a nice satin worn finish. I do the same thing to my Frankenstrat replica's (if you haven't seen that video). You can get that steel wool at Wal Mart or Home Depot pretty cheap. Its great for guitar work in general.
