The Philippines is my favorite country in the world and this is the first story I’ve told here that is somewhat controversial. But I felt the need to tell it because it is real life on the streets of Manila. Evelyn is an amazing person and this is very much a success story about her life. Thanks for watching and I welcome your comments below - I’ll be reading and responding to them 🙏🏼

I lived in Manila for work for 4yrs and they are some of the most happiest people you will ever meet. It's not their fault as when you get a certain age it's almost impossible to find work so this doesn't help the situation. Maybe you should leave America travel and leave your comfort zone it's one of the perks I get with traveling for work, seeing all over the world and eating amazing people. (Ha typo meeting amazing people)
@everybodytalkstodemons5892 I hope you can have that option oneday. For me I was struggling in Australia but got an opportunity to work in Asia 10yrs ago and my life is now good I travel Asia Pacific, Europe and soon America doing training. I know that some Filipinos might find this featured story insensitive but for me it's an eye opener with a great lesson to learn from. A lot of people in those areas are suffering from poverty and is food insecure and Pagpag is their only way out to fill up those hungry stomachs. Hoping and praying that someday, these people will no longer resort to eating pagpag, that it will only be a memory for the kids when they grow up. Kudos Drew for featuring the other side of the Philippines.

@anthuvanaaseevagar1387I agree, it opens our eyes more to these kinds of situations and what these people are going through, without people like him we’ll never know about it. And I think he has to somehow make money off it? If not how can he continue to do these videos? Hopefully he pays them well, but from our perspective/position, we can’t really be a moral knight and demand that he treat these people right when we aren’t even doing anything, just sitting on our asses, watching the video and complaining 💀💀 like some ppl cough
This video is very humbling. Ilm disabled and autistic and I complain sometimes about how my home is not suited for a disabled person. I will NEVER complain again after watching this video. Compared to them, my life must look luxurious. They're very strong and resilient people.
I hate this “glad myself is better than your azz” mindset. Like when you see someone inferior than you, you feel grateful and worship God because at least you ain’t suffering the same like these poor azz people… I always find this mindset irritating.
We have so many people on YT making videos showing them dumpster diving or getting food from restaurant garbage here in the states. It's pathetic that it has come to this, but so much food is thrown out.
@@OldLadyInFL do these people even eat vegetables and other fruit that don't belong in the garbage? There's so many ways to avoid this unsanitary greedy Behavior because at the end of the day they sell the food to other human beings
Watching this as a Filipino citizen for my whole life has painted Tondo and its people in a new coat of paint, it makes me appreciate what I have being a part of a middle class family in a metropolitan city with proper living conditions and availability for food.
Ever heard the saying "It is better to give than to receive?" This kind woman, feeling broken, damaged, rejected and discarded, much like the scraps she repurposes, bruised by the actions of someone she had once trusted and loved, saw an opportunity to give back to her community and in the process, supported her family, found purpose and healed.. ❤❤❤ i LOVE this!
The fact that the food was eaten by someone else wouldn't be my main concern, bur rather what else was put into the trash like this RUclipsr said. This video made me ponder how we must choose happiness every day. Blue T-shirt Guy was respectful and so kind. Evelyn and the people of Tondo are an inspiration.
I've lived in the United States most of my life. I have seen homeless people eating leftovers after people leave their tables in restaurants like Mcdonald's and even directly from the trash. Dumpster diving is also very common here in the U.S. Pagpag is probably cleaner since it's been cleaned and recooked. The story is sad and inspiring at the same time.
The only problem is Segregation. I watched Dumpster divers in the US and the garbage there is not the same in the Philippines. It was organized unlike in the Philippines. You don't know how nasty it is when poop and food is in the same garbage
I once watched RUclipsr who is traveling on the cheap. He ran out of money and went to dumpster in New York in the center near good grocery shop. Food was good and packaged. You clearly can eat it. He also met immigrant from Russia or Ukraine near dumpster. They talked about charities.
@@tanicavala8772 Garbage is Garbage, if it is not locked and secured anyone can throw anything in it. Not sure what you mean by organized garbage. Ive seen homeless people peeing inside dumpsters organized or not.
I’ve actually gone dumpster diving in the US with a poor family in Appalachia. It was behind a small grocery. We found still frozen foods in packages set to expire at midnight, foods still cool with same sell by dates. There were also edible fruits, vegetables, slightly bruised or a bit overripe, perfectly fine with washing and cooking. There were a few items like canned stuff or boxed foods, expired but recently. We took nothing that was obviously gone off or canned goods with huge dents or swollen. It really made me think because this was the USA in the mid-1980’s, not a slum in the Philippines! I did eat the food because it hadn’t been in someone else’s mouth or rotting all day in a dumpster. Why was it being thrown out instead of saved and donated? Yes, we could have been arrested. It’s a crime to be hungry? No, the parents were not on drugs. The mother worked part time in a gas station to which she walked six miles to save on gas! The father was disabled with what was probably COPD. He’d previously done some mining but couldn’t anymore because he got so winded. He didn’t have black lung thus got no disability. They were raising eight children, three of their own and her sister’s five to keep them out of the foster care system.
i literally cried for Chui's humbleness, when he ate the food. The way he respectfully present the people and food, not making distinction , given the circumstance
A whole new meaning to ONE MANS TRASH IS ANOTHER MANS TREASURE THATS AMAZING, I’ll always remember this when I try to throw my leftovers away 😢I’m sending prayers and more happiness to them ❤
Could you imagine being in one of the poorest communities and still being able to congregate with friends and family at a restaurant? Evelyn is amazing and is such an important part of that community.

I can tell u, that in the poorest communities at least in my country Argentina, congregation and sharing food is every day thing, Mostly is like "hey lets make a stew", "I have some rice and onions" "i have some meat and tomatoes" "I have this" "I have that" and thats how poor ppl eats
i still dream of a day where no Filipino has to eat pagpag nor go hungry at at all. thank you for telling the story and bringing awareness, Drew and Chui!
I think the Philippine government should start increasing agricultural production so that it can provide free food assistance for its own people, especially the poor, greetings from Indonesia

My second video on pag pag and it doesn’t get any easier to watch. It’s remarkable the joy and gratitude these people share, not to mention resourcefulness. Because of the obvious public health risks I wonder wouldn’t she turn over a similar profit selling rice and an inexpensive meat dish like hot dogs. Clearly not a zero cost operation but saves on labor by not having to procure scraps.
I think she just wouldnt be able to produce as much quantity as she does and I’m sure the cost of the uneaten food even the cheapest isnt comparable to what they get from the trash basically for free
Much respect to Ms.Evelyn. She's providing a service for ppl who probably wouldn't be able to eat good food likd that otherwise. One person's trash truly is another's treasure. Excellent job Mr.Drew!!
I’m not going to lie, this is a struggle to watch… As it may be for others. However, I am not diminishing by any terms, the need for survival. This woman has nailed it!! So much waste from our world… Can be used to feed so many. Much love from 🇨🇦❤️
Would you be saying this if you bought food from a vendor and it came from the trash and maybe had some throw up on it before it was cooked and the vendor didnt tell you where it came from? you just assumed it was fresh new food?
@@pumpkin-fu4cmmy mother used to work in a restaurant in Toronto in the early sixties , and she was telling me that the owners took all the meat that was leftover from people’s plates and saved it , and put it in the fridge , and one’s a week they used to make meat croquettes out of the chopped leftover minced meat , and people thought they tasted wonderful , and I asked her did you report that to the department of health ? OMG only poor people buy these kinds of food. where will these poor family get money if they get sick? there is nothing worst than making money out of other people's misery.
@@scr1m844 no way dumpster diving jolibee, transporting, sorting, washing, boiling then fry cooking scraps again takes less effort than raising your own chicken. her husband probably moved on from the slum instead of selling deepfried eaten jolibee bones.

I actually met my (Now) Ex-husband in Tondo. I am from New Zealand. He comes from a very similar background, with a loving and hardworking family. We have 7 children, and even though we are now divorced, we are still very amicable to each other, and I absolutely LOVE my in-laws, even though we are no longer together. I try and visit as much as I can as my in-laws are old and I still care about them very much, and I support them as much as I can.
@barisi saro As you can see, we have a lot of restaurants around the world but they do not give their leftover food to people. Not only that you teach them to be lazy, in case something happens to them they will be the responsibility of that restaurant for any hospital bills.
they're cooking food from the trash, but still using well cleaned cookwear. inspiring to know that even with food that obviously isnt 'food safe', these folks are doing their best to keep it as safe possible :) thanks for a great video!

Philippines are one of the best nationalities and people I've ever met. As I lived in Abu Dhabi and interacted and lived with filipinos almost all my life, I can't say nothing but they're a great people from a wonderful country who are always positive, humble and hygienic and respectful. All love from New York!
@@posh7079 if it's not rotten, then it's good food and a blessing.. if they wash it good and cook it well they should definitely be alright.. That's is probably more hygienic than ordering from a McDonalds branch in USA with all their over processed genetically modified foods.

You’re absolutely right, and that’s a great thing to say about someone. And I agree with you; looking at the surface of this situation. But I do have a different opinion, because there is more going on here (. I want to make sure, you, coldfact, know I am not trying to direct my comment “ at” you, or be mean to you, or say ur wrong. 👍) Sometimes, when a person is a guest in other countries and cultures, and been invited into their homes, ect., that person may be offered food, that’s meant as a sign of respect. Not always, but sometimes, refusing that food can be seen as a sign of disrespect. Maybe this guy didn’t know that. I didn’t know that-until my cousin told me this; a situation just like this happened to him. But it does not help this dudes case, that he is filming people humbly digging thru garbage, to make a dish his entire documentary is about. And it really didn’t help him, when his film crew all sat down and took a plate. And it absolutely didn’t help that he lied and said he had food poisoning, because it was obvious he didn’t have food poisoning. I almost feel a bit sorry for him. Next time, maybe he will just accept the plate. ( You don’t have to chow down with wild abandon)
@@theredqueen4986 He ate the coffee & Coke and biscuit just fine. Any host would understand if their guest refused to also eat some literal refried garbage they are serving up.
Heartrending yet very inspiring story. The woman is admirable in the sense that she faced her own struggles ( hardships, her husband left her) head on and chose to put a purpose in her existence. She chose to be happy.
My brother’s wife is filipino and that is how i found out about pag pag. Frankly while I’m Squeamish about this dish i am very touched by the poverty and the lengths they would go to survive and salvage and still maintain that smile and spirit. I’m just so touched and its a reality check for us in the first world. ❤
Wow I’ve noticed that the people in the Philippines always find a way to be grateful and make things work with resources they have it brings tears to my eye God bless the Philippines I can learn for them to be grateful and find Joy

I think you are naive , Phillippine culture is toxic as hell. They smile in front of people and always act happy, but reality s they get envious o others and hate behind closed doors. They plot on their own family members if they are doing better than them. They have a crab in barrel mentality.

It’s nice to see this place again, I’ve visited this place about 5 years ago to complete our community development subject. As a foreigner I was warned that I’m susceptible to snatching and the like, so my classmates and other employees of the barangay were all eyes on us. Regardless of few negative experiences, I enjoyed every single moment of our stay. People are friendly especially the small ones each time we teach them numbers and letters. It was our last day when we try pagpag from a humble home, probably not the best food that I tried but good enough to fill you up for the day. It was not food that makes everything remarkable nor the negative experience, it was the extreme hospitality and the friendly atmosphere that makes you home. Like giving you the best bed to sleep even if they lay on the floor, taking the most treasured utensils so we could use them etc. I wish the city government would open their eyes to see the real situation these people had to endure everyday not just being seen during election. But I doubt that they would even try to read our studies and recommendations as no actions has been taken since then. I wish those eyes flaming with hope are still burning from those children we met in Tondo. ❤
My countries government is so corrupt and they only pay attention to the rich neighborhoods or the well developed cities in the country instead of the under developed cities and towns who need redevelopment and support from the government

I still remember when I first entered high school, me and some of my friends watched a short documentary about this in the Philippines. At that time, I felt disgusted watching the video, and it became a trending topic of conversation in school. But now, after 12 years have passed, I came across a video coverage about the same thing, and now I understand and have gained a different perspective.

Yeah, I kind of called bullshit when he said that people who live in more affluent areas have more problems and more worries. Maybe it seems that way to him because rich people have the luxury of complaining about it and being able to sit around and feel sorry for themselves all day long. They have no real problems so they get bored and have to make up problems to complain about. Poor people only seem happier because they can't afford to bitch and whine and feel depressed, they have to bust their asses all day every day, just to survive. That's why they are always so happy and grateful with every single little crumb that they get. because they know how hard and cruel life can actually be, they never take anything for granted.

Suffering is subjective. For people that don't know any different life isn't that bad for them. We have people in America who think sitting in an air conditioned office for 8 hours a day is torture and robbing them of life. I know rich people who are miserable as hell and know poor people who are the most positive and happiest people on earth.
Thank you for featuring pagpag. It has been featured on late night national TV docus in the 90s, and it’s a very authentic pinoy phenomena, sprung from life’s struggles in the country. Like the jeepney, pagpag is uniquely pinoy. I’m sure ate is not the original innovator of pagpag, but knowing that still exists to this day, it’s still a reflection of the pinoy resiliency.
Thats my girlfriend saying!😋
Beautiful summary.
Idk about the whole eating trash tho lol
Seen the same when I was a manager but was mainly mentally ill or alcoholism
Guy in the blue shirt has such a friendly & humorous personality, I enjoyed every minute of it 😎

Clearly not a zero cost operation but saves on labor by not having to procure scraps.

I love how happy they are even though they live such a simple life. Happiness really doesnt comes from the amount of materials you own. This is such an inspiring documentary !
Right. And here in the first world you got people ready to kill themselves because they can’t afford a benz or bmw. And many cases where people have all that yet still want to off themselves. Very telling.
It is sad to see people's suffering. But amazed they accept the reality and try to spread happiness.
I love how drew takes us to all these places where a lot of people live in poverty 😢It makes you appreciate life more ❤ I love your channel Drew!
Absolutely ! Always be grateful!

Only the 1000th RUclipsr to document this women…
This clip is sure to tug at our conscience in many different ways.
Its unbelievable how much happiness it brings to these people.
Pug Pug - Tug Tug 😢
I'm on my way to the Philippines as we speak. Luckily I've been able to see both the rich and poor sides of the country before. It's an important life experience❤
I salute Chui and the camera man for trying out the best pag pag in town 👏
I have utmost respect for her to turn nothing into something and specially when she say she doing it honestly is so true !
This is truly making do with what you have. Wow! I respect and admire these people for their resilience. I’d love to travel to the Philippines one day. I saw no tears in this video, despite the alarming housing conditions. It really puts how western society has lost its way into perspective. I saw no one crying because they were misgendered, no one crying about the weather or any other menial problem. Just happy land ❤
People here make crap up to get attention
@@stipkovich15 lol pity you. Why you became party pooper here, dude? They are giving comments for support Drew though. Who hurt you? Go outside, socializing, not just being a salty people on the internet.
there's no such thing as "false happiness". People in Tondo are grateful in whatever they have. Compare to those who eat in a nice clean dining table, but full of loneliness and depression.
Learn from them. GET YOUR LIFE BACK! BE CONTENTED OF WHAT YOU HAVE and for WHO YOU ARE!!
PROUD TO BE FILIPINO🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭💪
@@hu6860 so true, they make do with what they have. My mom says if you have rice to eat your life is rich. My mom grew up poor. I remember her working as a child to put food on the table. At one of her jobs, she would cut and clean fish but the problem was it was in far off town. She had no where to go, the "landlord" would charged her 50 cents to use cardboard box to sleep on. ..
You can honestly reflective and see how fuck the United of states of America is frfr
This made me appreciate things even more like food shelter and just the place we live thank you for sharing with us 💯
When you're hungry, you'll eat what's available. I've never been so hungry and I give thanks daily. I am grateful for what I do have. I've seen you eat some things I don't think I'd want to ever see or try either. I didn't imagine there'd be something you could not try, and I'm with you on this. God bless you for trying to stay objective and find the good side.
She is an amazing entrepreneur.she has an outstanding business. Thank you for your time and her time as well. Am a new subscriber.. within 30 seconds of watching this i subscribed
i am amazed at the resilience and creativity of these folks. this is the other side that needs to be seen!
As Americans we are so wasteful. It's sad that some people have all the luxury things in the world, while others are happy with with leftover food items. Hopefully, this video will give many people out there a whole new meaning to life.
True
This is probably one of my faves of your episodes. Plus I am so fascinated with "pagpag" culture. I've never tried it, probability of me having it, slim to none, but it is something that makes me appreciate what I have in life.. To find happiness in the things you have in life, like family, and friends, that is what's important. Contentment with what you have. Thanks for this Drew.
Props to you Drew and Chui and crew for showcasing it, the effort is much appreciated.
I got so emotional when he said that her husband left her. I don't know why but she reminds me of my mother, I wish there was a way to make their life easier, they deserve better, this could have been me in a different universe,
Is amazing her hard work and good intentions , but personally I would not eat her food, although she’s feeding others and supporting her children is amazing!❤️
Much respect to Miss Evelyn. Thanks Drew & Chui for sharing. Love this story. Humbling.
As messed up as it is at no fault of her own, Evelin is helping solve her community’s hunger. Which is more than any government organization will ever do! I hope happiness to this community 🥰
drew your just an amazing person. documenting everything from around the world. I really enjoy your videos and have more appreciation to life nowadays. its a blessing to have people like you making these amazing videos for us to watch. THank you
