Geekdom I believe that Goku nor Vegeta will surpass Beerus in the series there are points to it in the anime so far and that's why they need Monaka to motivate Goku.

Jaco made the order... not Mr. Satan...
The thing I liked most about this episode was its attention to the personalities of each character and their dynamics. It gave airtime to many side characters, which was great especially after an arc that focused mainly on Goku and Vegeta + new characters. In this episode, we get to see Vegeta interacting with Bulma so naturally--reminding the viewers again of Vegeta's massive character development since Z. We get to see Goten being mischievous and cute when coming up with the "transformation" idea, and we see Trunks tell Beerus to 'take responsibility,' showing that Trunks is a child that's not afraid to call out the god of destruction for being childish. Again, their personalities got to shine in the little moments. Even Krillin had a moment where he uses the solar flare on his long-time friend, Goku, as did Piccolo, Chiaotzu, and Yamcha with his epic fail. Even Chi Chi had a more respectable moment in this episode, where she managed to distract Goku in the guise of her typical bossiness. And can't forget that EVEN (fucking) Puar had a role in this episode! On top of all this, we get to see Beerus getting madly excited sparring with his pupil in a Monaka outfit. And of course, there's Goku. Goku's charms shined throughout this episode, really highlighting that, outside of battle, he's an innocent, trusting, and kind of dumb guy who is not at all hard to deceive.
+TOxicHigh J That being said, we didn't get any Gohan. They give us Puar but no Gohan?! He's probably going to get some airtime in the upcoming episode, but still...come on.

Dude, Jaco ordered the desserts not Satan, and Mr. Satan met him at the tournament. You need to make sure you have accurate subs, the delivery makes sense because it was ordered for the party. You probably know all of this now, but I just needed to say it anyway.

Great review. Just a couple of things:
-Jaco ordered the goods from planet Sweets, not Mr. Satan.
-Satan having a soft-spot for Monaka it's pretty much a cheeky joke because Monaka's pulled a "Mr. Satan" on the last tournament. No need to overthink it. It's basically just Toriyama's sense of humor again.
Why doesn't everyone like this comment so Geekdom can see it?
That episode was actually a heck of a lot of fun. Reminds me so much of the old school Dragon Ball I love so much!

Man, I miss those Whis Training outfits. I think those were the best costumes for Goku and Vegeta. I like Black/Grey on Vegeta way more than blue.

The whole thing is a big misunderstanding. Goku never explicitly says he needs Monaka to motivate him and we all know he's probably aiming for Beerus anyway. (besides, now he has HIT as someone to look up to)
Guys remember: Beerus and Whis are stating their OPINIONS. They ASSUMED that Goku would slack off without Monaka. Just because Whis says something doesn't mean he's stating a fact--granted he's been going back and forth from sensei to mr.exposition for Goku and Vegeta--but he still doesn't know much about Goku.
Besides, "Monaka" is probably Beerus's ploy to make sure that Goku is NOT gunning for Beerus straight away. It's all a bunch of people planning their own schemes and not telling anyone else, so ofc everyone's confused.

Throughout this whole episode I just kept thinking "C'mon. Not even Goku is that stupid." But I was wrong. Very wrong.
Jeez man... Satan was at the tournament, Jaco seems to have ordered the delivery, Beerus is the motivation to Goku, don't you remember his line when he used the SSBlue kaioken? Chaotzu didn't hold Goku for long, literally 5 seconds...
I was under the impression that Jaco ordered the packages because his reaction to seeing Monakas ship was "the tastiest food in the galaxy" or something like that and it just happens to Monaka delivering. I think Satan expected Monaka to be there because Beerus and Whis was comming and probobly thought Monaka was coming with them.
Actually the fight between Goku and false Monaka was one of the best fights during all DBS. Really good animation, nice choreography. Really nice episode at all. I wish all episodes got that animation and good story.
You forgot to mention the most jaw dropping part of the preview.....Pan was standing up powering up

They met at the tournament and buu and hercule went up to talk to him while they were talking about what Beerus was gonna wish for.
Hercule talked to Monaka briefly after he win against Hit. it can be assumed he got a method of contact during that encounter
Satan was on the planet without name, when the tournament happened, and he aproached Monaka there and asked him if he would be interested in fighting for him (for Satan).
Who knows how strong Chiaotzu has gotten since the Saiyan Saga. The times we do see him throughout Z, he's training with Tien. He can be a beast for all we know.
Lol Pan in the preview looks hilarious as she powers up. Also I think Gohan is in the hyperbolic time chamber haha
Trunks accidentally hitting Monaka and seeing Monaka go flying is reminiscent of Hercule being hit by Trunks and going flying.
Dude, Jako ordered the dessert, and Monaka just happened to be the delivery guy. Satan just had the costume made and it was just chance he met Monaka
Yo Geekdom. As I recall, there was a couple second clip where Mr. Satan met Monaka in episode 41. He went up to him and complemented Monaka, saying he's strong (for beating Hit).
I like how the Monaka mask changes facial expressions lol

The Monaka-Satan partnership is actually really fantastic writing, not at all weak. You guys all focus so much on dialogue that you miss subtextual cues. Vegeta and Piccolo figured out Monaka a long time ago. The only two people that have had no clue have been Goku and Satan. Satan thinks the guy is amazing, and it's because he is the same fraud that Satan is. You should know this; you even compared Satan vs 18 to Monaka vs Hit. Who better to be Satan's mascot than his intergalactic counterpart?!?

I love this kind of episodes, it takes me back to my old Dragon Ball days where it was all about the comedy.
Hercule doesn't know how strong Monaka is. If Hercule told the people of earth that Monaka is a strong universal champion they would believe him and want to go to his gym to train. Also, Hercule is rolling in money. I'm sure he could get ahold of Monaka's delivery company and order things. verything doesn't have to be explained in detail.
I'm shocked that you didnt talk about how pan powers up in the next episode lol....That kinda blew my mind.

The spanish translation is always up before the english one and in the spanish one the one who ordered things was Jaco, he ordered space sweets and it just happened to be Monaca the one delivering them.
Ok, so am I the only one that noticed that Gohan was missing? Surely his "conference meeting" is over by now, and the next episode mentions someone taking care of Pan.

They showed a flash back scene at the Tournament (where they met satan and monaka) DURING the episode, don't know how you missed that.

You really have to watch these episodes subbed. It makes complete sense subbed. Satan didn't make the order, Jaco did. Also, Satan knows Monaka from the end of the tournament. He asked him about being his mascot then.
I think another thing that reviewers has passed or not gone in detail is the new friendship between piccolo and vegeta. My only worry is that vegeta starts taking a seat since most of beerus's concern is only goku.
1. Jaco was the one to order space sweets --> Monaka delivered them!
2. Mr. Satan tried to recruit Monaka at the Nameless Planet Tournament --> thought Monaka would be at the celebration --> made outfit to try and win him over!
3. Beerus doesn't even understand that he himself is the benchmark Goku is aiming for....that would be unthinkable for Beerus = so Beerus thinks that a 'Powerful Monaka' is the best way to motivate Goku.
4. I'm not sure that Goku actually fell for Beerus's trick.....maybe Goku was smart enough to realize what Beerus was doing and pretended to be fooled = Beerus stays happy!
I thought Satan met monaka shortly after the tournament during the previous episode and gave him the proposal to work with him and his gym?
fate then made it so that monaka was the one that was delivering the items.
It is a filler episode pretty good for a filler and hilarious as well. Can't wait to see pan power up in the next episode :D

hypothetical curiosity question :if (somehow)super ties itself into gt (ignoring obvious conflictions )or as is or even rewriting certain parts to try and make sense of it .would it be cannonizing gt or would it push it even further toward general hate

First of all, I have to say that episode 42 of DB Super was surprisingly a great episode! For some reason I think that this episode has the second best fight in all of Super. The fact that the fight was a straight up fist fight with no ki blasts, no high speed clashes in the air (the ones not even the the viewers of the show can see) and no transformations, makes a classic Dragon Ball fan like me very happy. In addition, the animation during the fight was pretty decent. Overall, Goku vs Fake Monaka is my second favourite fight in DB Super.

The reason Whis wants Goku to be motivated because he was told that Monaka put up a better fight against Beerus than himself. So knowing that he is weaker he (Goku) wants to be equal or greater. Plus Satan was at the tournament and witnessed Monaka and made him that deal after the win. Also bulma ordered more food because Buu was eating most of it and therefor Monaka was the delivery man.
The way I see it, the reason Goku wants to fight Monaka is that, if he thinks he can't beat Beerus, he wants to see if he can take on Monaka. It's true that Monaka isn't strong, but Goku doesn't know that, and he thinks that if he can fight Monaka and gauge his power, he can push himself to get stronger. To Goku, if he beats Monaka, he's that much closer to beating Beerus.
The best thing about this episode is that they used their throw away characters.

My two cents on the whole motivation thing is yes it does't really make sense, but maybe knowing there are a lot more people than just Beerus and Whis that are stronger than him will motivate him more. All in all this episode felt like a slight throw back to master Roshi being Jackie Chun which I liked.
About the Chiaotzu attack, it's not like Goku was facing and fighting him and even then he was more confused than anything and just walked right out of it which made Chiaotzu fall over. Idk things like this are just like when Krillen threw a rock at Goku and it hurt him since he wasn't expecting it.

Ehh, it's just filler.
To say something about the "not aging", look at how Goku aged in Dragonball when he trained with god for three years, he looked A LOT older in comparison, we might have a short timeskip and they had a growth phase,looking 2 years older at once!
(remember that every animal [especially humans] sometimes grows less for some time only to have accelerated growth in the next time period.
Goku grew up strange and we can't really deduce anything about Gohan with all the training in the time chamber, cosmic flights and life and death situations.
The animation has been great for the past 3-4 episodes!!! I'm loving super more and more thanks to the fighting styles being good like dbz and animation being great now

The moral of this episode was that its a pain in the ass to get away with lies. Though this lie is a benefit for Goku to train even harder.

+David F Wrong in the buu saga he was tall asf then, I think they just changed his height to the namek saga size because tall Dende wasn't "kawaii" enough for Japan.
I also think the explanation is because Beerus doesnt want Goku to know that he was the strongest he's ever fought...pretty obvious

Amazing how Fake Monoka fight was a hell of a lot more entertaining than the Super version of Golden Frieza.
