I discovered this game a few years ago, when I was aimlessly scrolling down the Steam store page for like half an hour. I was bored and not really interested in any game at the time. When I saw this one I thought it looked interesting and bought it, but didn't expect much from some random indie game that I found while digging deep in the store out of boredom...
Today I have about 1300 hours into Battle Brothers and can safely say that it is my favorite game ever. I even bought every DLC and dev support pack (which says a lot, since I am a greedy ahole).
Feels great to see this gem being discovered by other people!

First of all let me congratulate you on the video quality! And I mean you, not the vid itself. The way you talk, I can't recall a youtube VOD of BB being as entertaining as you made it! Congratulations!
I won't criticize your combat choices and strategies since making mistakes is part of the fun and I don't really like backseating. BUT
Since you literally asked in the video at 22:00 :
Yes, you should've stayed behind. You had more archers than the enemy. Simple as that. 1 vs 0. Therefore they must come to YOU, which spends their AP and allows you to hit first in combat and/or pelt them with arrows. You did move your frontliner 4 squares on the 1st turn, spending 8AP. That put you close enough to the enemy that they could walk (2AP) and slap you (4AP). With planning you can nearly always get the first hit in.
Also, making enemies come to you allows you to setup spearwalls (spears have innate +% hit chance) making it especially useful earlygame.
At 54:00 you literally ask for perk management on tier 1:
    - Colossus = always decent. It's the Vanilla flavor. Can't ever go wrong with it. Won't ever be the absolute best either.
    - Recovery for planned 2 handers. Useless early on, amazing in lategame where you wield 2 handed weapons. Their fatigue is HIGH AF. Also, being attacked (hit or miss) also fatigues you, so frontliners love it.
    - Crippling Strikes: Generating more wounds is always good (except undead) since an injured shoulder, for example, will cut enemy effectiveness by 25% or so, increasing your brothers survivability a LOT. I usually get that on my archers and hammer/mace 2handers. Note that diff weapons cause diff wounds. And blunt weapons are the absolute god-tier wounds like concussions or broken elbows, while bows pierce and swords slash.
    - Student is the greedy choice. It's absolutely incredible. But I'd recommend one or two tops. Only the brothers you really want to keep. Leveling up faster is priceless in this game.
    - Pathfinder is an amazing perk, even more so with expansions ON, so not exactly your case but still worth considering. Snow, Desert and Swamps are costly to move around. And positioning is king as in any other strategy game.
    - Fodder people should get Colossus and a shield to die 1 turn later than planned if they're lucky.
There's also a couple stat sweet-spots (such as Resolve, Fatigue etc) as well as a couple cookie-cutter archetypes that make the journey much more enjoyable. But I won't delve in it unless specifically asked. Again: I don't particularly enjoy backseating.
1:21:00 you were struggling with elevation camera angles.
Numpad + and - change elevations on terrain so you don't have to wonder if that tile is 2 or 3 steps away. ^_^
Also, top right of the screen, there are icons with an arrow UP or DOWN. That's their purpose.
Enough backseating. I'll just shout a bit about mechanics from here on. Read if you want to know more. :)
    ==========
Permanent Injuries happen when someone DIES in battle. Any Brother has a 25% chance to survive being struck down in battle. If so, perma injury. Brothers killed by fatalities such as decapitation don't get that chance (Orcs will make you understand what i mean lol!). No need to check if a brother is perma injured unless, ofc, he went down in the last battle.
Prices in town (you complain about food being overpriced early on) are related to their production (wheat fields, for example) AND most importantly, your reputation with the city. You were in a city where nobody knew you, so they'll charge you a LOT for each item and pay you a lot LESS as well. Making friends with a Big City and saving stuff to sell on their markets is sound economic advice.
Enemy difficulty scales based on #days passed.
You were afraid of the 1 skull Bandit Quest early on. Don't be.
Best missions early on are humanoid fights (because loot). You should avoid deliveries (no loot + days passed) unless no other option and avoid Beast Hunts like the plague (high risk, loot = pelts = crafting = lategame).
If no humanoid missions are available, legit consider raiding a bandit camp or undead on your own just for the exp+loot. They'll be balanced to # days so it won't be any harder than a normal mission.
    Loot Rules
Loot is based on the item's durability upon owner's death.
If you want to get someone's weapon; kill them as fast as possible, so they can't attack, therefore their weapon won't lose Durability.
If you want armor: Use knives/daggers so you bypass armor instead of chewing through them, making it possible to loot.
Therefore knives should go primarily to frontliners (Melee Skill)
    Stars:
Your boys will level 1-3 (couple exceptions) in their stats PLUS however many stars they got (averages ofc. And maximum +5). Since you get 10 levels in the entire game:
51 + 2*10 (levels) + 1,5*10 (2 stars) = 79 ish. That would be final stats for your original archer.
30 + 2*10 (levels) + 2*10 (3 stars) = 70 ish. Those would be final stats for your beggar archer with 3 stars.
Therefore your original Brother was a better archer both now and endgame.
Monks are good backgrounds. Good Resolve stat, baseline. Makes a very good Sargeant candidate.
A sarge passively boosts your Brother's morale by a % of their own resolve.
Also, they can Rally, restoring morale to your squad. That is also based on their Resolve skill.
Egil, the Forkman, has cool stats to become a Sargeant, by the way.
Sargeants keep the Company Banner equipped as their main weapon so backline brothers with a polearm. Resolve, M.Skill and Fatigue do incredibly well.

As of this video coming out i have 473.3 hours in this game, and i look forward to our insightful amphibious friend experiencing the joy of triumph, and pain of defeat only this game can bring. EDIT:Also to anybody new to this game or who buys it because of AA, getting spears and cheaper armor early on really helps, the accuracy bonus of spears makes fairly garbage brothers into somewhat competent combatants until they can level up a bit or be replaced by a better brother. It's still highly likely they'll be killed if you get unlucky or misplay, but the added accuracy increases the likelihood of them dealing damage that can save other brothers down the line.

Sometime much later, after you get a solid feel of the gameplay and make it to several endgame scenarios (and hopefully win those scenarios) and/or check out the DLC ; you should tab a mod named Battle Brothers Legends, and keep it on the shelf for future use. This game is amazing. One thing to look out for is markets with damaged equipment. There are parties in the world that sell damaged equipment to towns. Super discounts for highly damaged gear, and since repair stuff can be scavenged from every battle, you get good armor for cheap.
Also, don't sleep on Puncture, lower chance to hit, but no damage to armour. Armour has a higher likelyhood of dropping the less damage it takes, so it is quite useful to get good armour drops

Quick summary of weapons and tactics, will probably miss something. Axes break shields, Maces stun enemies, Swords get to counter attack, Spears can defend a square automatically attacking anyone that tries to pass, Flails avoid shields, Cleavers get to decapitate enemies. The two handed weapons and polearms have different special strikes that can push, pull, break shields or attack multiple opponents. Bows are usefull against lightly armoured oponents and get an extra attack, crossbows are good against heavily armoured oponents but takes an attack to reload. You should have at least two, possibly three good ranged units to be able to snipe Necromancers, Undead priests, Goblin Shaman and other special units that can change the tides of battles. Spears are good for the beginning, but ideally go for axes and maces and have at least one headhunter specialize in cleavers. Another option is to give your frontline men maces and shields and have your second line with polearms men with long axes to break shields. Though bowmen can be useful in the early game, it's much better to invest in crossbowmen instead, since mid to late game bowmen will be completely useless.

    • @abhuyllongfellow4233
      @abhuyllongfellow4233 2 года назад +1

Hard disagree on a couple points. But generally sound advice!
      1. Ranged units etc etc and you cite Undead Priests. They're immune to arrows, the best you could do is break their necklaces. The others, top notch advice.
      2. why one headhunter spec'd into cleavers? By headhunter I assume you meant a duelist (as in the build, not the perk). I'd say don't specialize him at all and save the perk. When you get the GG weapon, you spec into int. Otherwise gambling for a +Dmg Orc Cleaver is a low chance of paying off, where you could find an OP mace for example and deal both more dmg than the cleaver (because armor effectiveness), plus get better injuries AND be useful against undead on top of it all!
      3. Archers are amazing late game. War Bows pierce enough that, with Crippling Strikes, an injury is a practically a given. You can kill one enemy with an xbow per turn, sure, but you can disable two (plus morale checks) with bows. And with Berserk, possibly three.

If you had/are having problems with lategame, just tell me which 2 enemy groups are giving you the most trouble and I'd be happy to try to give you some pointers!
By the way the Headhunter perk is lest say.... underwhelming. If you hit someone in the head they'll either be dead or severely injured, let's be honest. Also you only have baseline 25% chance to hit head to begin with.
THEN you get a "guaranteed hit in the head". But the game doesn't tell you that you can miss this attack. It's a hit in the head IF it connects, which may be a problem. AND it only works for hits on the same enemy iirc so you can't farm a hit on a goblin and hit another. (dunno if patched, haven't tested).
Also, assuming you have Warrior of The North DLC, you get access to the Ice Cave.
Trying not to spoil much in case you haven't seen it. But you get a guaranteed 2Handed Cleaver + an amazing armor set. If you loved your 2H Cleaver Brother, then this gear is what you always dreamt of, trust me. ^_~
Also also, beware of undead gear in general. I can guarantee your Brother used to hit things twice and had to Recover or rest for a couple turns lol
Finally, assuming for whatever reason you really really reeeeeeeally want the Headhunter, try to farm an Assassin or Killer on The Run. They have +% to hit head as a background bonus, allowing you to score the 1st headshot a little bit easier. That said, they work great with Famed Three Headed Flails (might be hard to come by unmodded) easily hitting 50% head chance.

Use ranged weapons to your advantage and get some pole arms to stand behind your shield wall when you can. Having someone be your second lineman with a pole weapon is also a great way to get XP for future prospects too. Just some basic strategies from someone with over 400 hours in this game. On recruiting : don't recruit fodder. Beggars and such are rarely worth it. I've had some bad-ass gravediggers in the past, but you have to play the beginning thinking endgame, don't have bums soaking up your early game XP just to get killed. You should strive not to lose anyone ever. Brawlers, Millers and Farmers in the beginning are the best you can do, then go for people with actual combat experience. They cost more but mid game if you're careful you'll have the finances to pay them. Not really ever worth it to get nobles or hedge knights, your early game guys will probably become as good as any of those and much cheaper. Don't swell your ranks too quickly either, pace yourself in a way you can equip everyone. You can have an amazing company with mostly farmers if you keep them alive long enough.

Get three archers, one to alternate between the two others, also have two pikemen to reinforce the back line, the rest all needs shields and spears.

Been hearing about this game for several years. Just when I decide to buy it, my gaming laptop goes in the shop for a stuck key on my keyboard. Been in the shop for over 1 month now, because they got the incorrect keyboard, so now have to wait 2-3 more weeks for the correct keyboard to arrive. Can't wait to dive into it.

I didn't know you were interested in BB, I love to see a series about it cause I'd such a good game but no body seems to be streaming it these days, I highly recommend the expansions since they add so much. However is one of those games that you definitely want access to a wiki or something like that since the games rarely holds your hand in learning how to get better is trail by fire

yeah the legends mod for this game is crazy, unit diversity, diffrent perk trees for every brother, some useless, some good, legendary hunt contracts, magic, extra events, a extreme challange run where you play as a shitty begger that steals combat stats from everything he kills but starts alone and poor
