Damn, this is super encouraging. I ended up here because I'm 27 years old with law degree (that I most definitely stumbled my way into) while I wanted to study computer science/data related studies. Only 3 or 4 months ago I discovered that dyscalculia exists, there is no way in hell I'd get diagnosed because I'm from Egypt and I'm struggling to get even an ADHD diagnosis, NO ONE knows what dyscalculia is around here. It's particularly helpful to know that you can get accommodations for dyscalculia. I'm planning to get a second bachelor's I Europe and this is very helpful.
Hello are you wondering if you have dyscalculia ? i might be able to help . but i am not working at offices and doing those tests . I am a professional tutor for more than 10 years and i know what is dyscalculia . you can see my math is different from other teachers and i know how it should be taught and learnt . very different from school ways .
I’m 47 and they did not have these tests when I was younger. I was told I was stupid and held back a grade even though math was the only subject I struggled with.😖
Hi this is me coming back to thank you. I saw this video and took notes then later scheduled a meeting with the special education chairperson at my school to run tests and then boom MY LIFE CHANGED. Thank you so much.
thanks for the vid, very encouraging. I definitely have dyscalculia and I'm studying mathematical neuroscience. it's very exciting and interesting after I found out that higher mathematics is way easier to conceptualize, it feels like it uses different regions than the ones required for the earlier levels of math. I find this especially true for topology, category theory, and number theory. What they make people do in math classes is calculation and computation, and those are all of what math can be. It can be a very fun, imaginative conceptual thing. If people were allowed to find the areas of math that work with their strengths instead of going on a predefined normalized path, maybe there wouldn't be a like 80% dropout rate for math...
Hello , do you wanna know what is going on with the system taught at school ? its totally wrong . go see my videos to see how it is done . also i pointed out some parts .........
@@nelsonfung3778 Hello Mr. Fung !! As your name came up , it reminded me of a very great and somewhat famous person known as Edsel Ford Fung , who was most entertaining waiter at a restaurant ‘Sam Wo’ (I think) in San Francisco’s Chinatown . Did you ever hear of him and are you any relation ? Thank you ….
Honestly sometimes i wonder if i have dyscalculia. Whenever i have to do a math problem at school I would freeze up and just sit there. And the anxiety is horrible, from 4th to 5th and even 6th grade I dreaded math tests or anything involving even the simplest math problem. I cheated or just avoided math altogether. Or just plain failing. I still deal with the dread and anxiety.
We're very similar. I memorized my two phone numbers easily, I read analog clock in very similar way, I cant do mental math and still count on my finger, I can do calculation only in paper. I also never memorized multiplication table and I've been memorizing it since grade 3 lol.
Leah I love your honesty. Do you know Dyslexia is very common LD too. It runs in families. Very common to not be able to learn times tables or rote memorization or telling time on an analog clock. Tying shoe laces is difficult too early on. I know people who have dyscalculia too. You should checkout understood website they go thru all the reasons why you struggle & what strengths you might have! I admire your hard work!
Idk if I have it but. I cannot CANNOT do mental math. I can barely count in my head, 5’s and 10’s is fine, but anything else no. I’m 7th grade, I still count on my fingers, and I just can’t learn my multiplication tables no matter how hard I try. Do u think I have it?? And with numbers it’s so hard for me to remember them for some reason. Also thr numbers if they’re in a big path they just mash. I am always second guessing myself to bc I just don’t trust myself with math, I sometimes look back at the number multiple times. I was failing math but now I have a C . Other classes I have an A and im amazing at reading. And I have big trouble with uneven numbers mostly. Like change counting change. But I have no idea if I have dyscalculia, I also have usually had problems with directions like left and right but I’ve gotten way better at that. I think if I have it I would have it mild. Think I have it?
I have directional dyscalculia. I was in the desert ...at night.....no cell service. Thank my stars they cam back for me with offline GPS or I would still be there.
I've had this my whole life, dyscalculia and dyslexia. I didn't realize what it was, for most of my life. I honestly just thought I was dumb. Now at 30, I've decided to re-teach myself math, adding, subtracting, multiplication and dividing. My mom and teachers knew that I struggled with math, but they didn't have enough time to actually do one on one assessment on me, or figure out other ways to teach me. They gave me ideas, friends parents recommended that I get a tutor, which looking back, would have helped me. Mom didn't push it because of the price. On top of dyslexia, affecting my spelling, if it wasn't for modern day computers, I honestly would have struggled big time with writing. I litterly just found out about the, touch point system for math, it is a life saver, with counting and writing down numbers. I didn't avoid my homework, I dreaded, being in math class, doing math problems in front of the teacher. Looking back at how much I struggled, either a one on one tutor or me being home schooled probably would have benifited me more, education wise. I love all the friends I made, but learning wise, I struggled. I only say home schooling or a one on one tutor would have helped me, because, in the last few days of doing math on my own, doing lessons online, plus RUclips videos, I feel I'm actually grasping the concepts more this time. In public school, it finally felt like I was just doing the homework, to finish it all as soon as possible, not actually learning it, just memorizing answers. :( Past few years, people have complained about online school, because of covid. This is just my opinion, but I think some people benefit from being in public schools, some, home school, or online school, or boarding school, tuturors, or college vs university. I don't know, sorry for the long rant, thank you for sharing your story. It's beyond words knowing I'm not alone.
I was a computer engineering major but I left for health care studies because engineering had too much math and I have math anxiety, don't like it also I forget formulas and I struggle to do mental mathematics. I still use my finger to count lol. Engineering math was going to get harder with calculus and then physics. Engineering is a good major with good salary but it's extremely difficult I know electrical engineering is the most difficult also computer engineering is similar to electrical both are extremely difficult. With this disorder it's appears impossible.
This is very helpful. I struggle with the same things as you and also don’t struggle with the same things. We seem very similar. Although my distance is good and time is not great. Late for everything!
Hey I'm from south africa and went to a day hospital where we get free service for poor communities and I went so I could be diagnosed and had a student doctor tell me there is no such thing as dyscalculia I asked have she heard about me and she said she has never heard about it so I don't understand how she could so quickly say it doesn't exist And knowing that I'm not good at talking I probably explained it wrongly to her but did tell her I heard it is under researched What do I do?
I got tested at ACLD Learning Center in Youngstown Ohio. I found them by calling universities near me and asking them if they knew of places nearby that do testing for adults, so if you’re not in the Youngstown area you could always try this wherever you’re at. Best of luck to you!
Find me for help if you need ..... my students are always the top in Hong Kong ...... i wonder how they will become in Canada or in US one of them skipped 2 grades after going to canada .........
You solve problems like any good engineer. Albert Einstein needed help to do his mathematics as well and had problems adding his groceries bill too. He developed his Theory of Special Relativity and Brownian Motion while working at a patent office after being refused a teaching position. Trust yourself, there are no limits.
I was was educated by nuns. LD did not exist...i was not living up to my potential and it was a choice not to pass. I was highly gifted in language....so it was a choice not to pass math. It took the entire school year to pass 2 times table to 3s. It was my problem and fault. I have always believed I was the village idiot. I worked in special ed for 30+ years abd have never heard of dyscalculia. I accidentally found it. I went for help armed with a word for my brain function. The expert had no clue what dyscalculia is. I am 57 years old and i started crying in her office. The word has to get out so the 3% to 7% of us find a solution.

Same
I have never related to the way I tell time so much. I also do it by increments of five and I can’t remember it without using that certain strategy.

I have three of them in dyscalculia
I feel everything you do so do you think I have dyscalia
girrlllllll, saaaaamee!!! Except remembering my passwords, credit card numbers and comprehending directions.
Find me for help if you need .....
my students are always the top in Hong Kong ......
i wonder how they will become in Canada or in US
one of them skipped 2 grades after going to canada .........
I absolutely agree with parallel parking!! once is enough for me lollll
how did you get diagnosed?

wow did albert einstein really did that ?
strange
Hey, you sound exactly like me. I was diagnosed with autism 6 years ago and math is just not something that I'm able to grasp
