Poor man. Performing as a classical musician of this caliber can be one of the most nerve-wracking things one can experience. Although it be an extremely rewarding career, it's no walk in the park.
He is and shall always remain one of the finest violinists ever. Situations like this usually happens to only the best ones.

I was moved when he bowed to the audiences again and again for not becoming able to continue the performance. I found his true spirit in trying to get through the performance even though he is deadly sick.
It looks like he felt true tragedy of betraying the audiences. I really respect him in the way he face his performance and his audiences.

There are clear indications that Li may have Tourette's Syndrome. It is entirely possible to have TS and play the violin as superbly as Li can do. Normally, as in the case of a neuro-surgeon with TS where I live, the compulsive behaviour mysteriously ceases when the person engages in specialised activity. Just as the symptoms go as soon as that surgeon picks up a medical instrument, so normally would Li's cease once he wields the bow. The problem on this occasion is that the symptoms took hold full force when he wasn't playing. A sad situation indeed, but I must hope that this is an isolated incident for him.

@@pluutoopI’d reckon the violin was so easy for him that it wasn’t able to make him concentrate on the music, but rather his mentality instead. For us normal humans, we have many things to distract ourselves from the mind. For Chuan yun li, the violin wasn’t enough a distraction, and further showed his distress while playing the violin perfectly. He must have went through something unimaginable for him to run through a piece beautifully, yet not completely focused on the music because of his mental illness

Quite sadly, as a Chinese, I can tell you that even with all those economic growth we have, China still greatly falls behind on mental health issues compared to other developed countries. People usually treat psychological disorders simply as the sufferers’ shield or covering for their own weakness and incompetence, because of their cruelty and ignorance.

  • @MrAeneas

None of us is perfect. I would feel so happy if I could play any instrument as well as he. I suspect that most or all of the people throwing insults at the man for a failed performance would go out of their way to show sympathy for a pretty girl under the same circumstances. How much of our lives do we need to spend being angry or critical when there is no existential need to do so? If I had the opportunity to overcome my limitations of age, health, finances, and a few other barriers, just to go to Shantu, China and attend a concert, explore the restaurants, meet people, take a few pictures, I would happily give up my "right" to be presented with a perfect concert. I've been a sailor of yachts; learned to work on engines, tend the foredeck, cook meals under sail, all of those ordinary skills, and one thing I've learned is that boats need care and attention, things break, no trip is certain to be without unexpected problems. Trouble on the journey is part of the game. Show some tolerance, friends. Aren't we all on the same team - Or, should we not be? Random thoughts. Thank You.

First than all I think playing the violin results in something that transport his mind into another stage (compare when she is performing and when is is not). What an incredible violinist...besides being very in tune and articulated (every note immaculate) he has an INCREDIBLE musicality, which is incredible contrasting with his behavior (punctual comment). I only can say that I am amazed and I hope he got better after this concert. I’m wondering what is in the mind of this wonderful musician

Most everyone on this thread is impressed with his continuation in spite of his distress. I am not. I think it was foolish. The human body is the most magnificent and remarkable instrument on Earth. When it communicates to you. You should listen. He was so determined to fulfill the wants of the audience, yet ignored the needs of his one and only true possession. People take more care of their material possessions than they do their bodies. He can have other performances. He can purchase other violins. He only has ONE body. If he dropped dead the next day, they would have another musician in his place.

If y'all think this is the result of practice, yall couldn't be so wrong. Tchaikovsky is fucking easy for him that he can play in his sleep. This is something that he has accumulated from childhood and finally exploded, there had to be a trigger before the performance that broke his threshold. It can be something very subtle like passive aggressiveness from the environment or people around him. Pay more attention to how people interact you'll notice the trigger eventually.

241hnd, because they were absolutely awful , out of time out of tune, not together, a truly dreadful public performance, it certainly did not help this young mans illness and panic, he leaned into them once as if to say play properly...sad.

These artists put themselves under a lot of pressure and who knows why he collapsed, maybe he wasn't feeling well, maybe his stomach ached, or he had a little cold or something. People should not criticize him, it's obvious he was stressed out. He seemed to be in some kind of physical pain. Poor guy, hope he was able to recover. Such a difficult situation to put yourself through in front of the whole audience.

I'm guessing he either had a "breathing problem", probably didn't control it well during the explosive movements. Sometimes when a musician gets "caught up" during a difficult , one forgets to BREATHE like they should, and after a short while, it can catch up with you. He was a REAL "hero" for coming back and finishing what he started. I say "BRAVO" for both his efforts and his playing.

Shame on you for posting this video! It shows a great musician suffering severely, whatever the couse might be. I'm more then positive he wouldn't have wanted this video uploaded. He wouldn't have wanted thousands of people watching this. The most empathetic way to handle something like this is to forget it, and hope for it never to happen again, but definately not to upload the documentation of it...

    • @pgibbs
      @pgibbs 3 года назад

Better to post than pretend it doesn't happen. As you can see, the response is supportive and not ridicule here, as opposed to some members of the orchestra who look deeply unimpressed.

Very true - the orchestra were a bit woeful - out of tune and out of sync with each other. But don't think that's the reason and it would not be an excuse if it was: the guy rather obviously has some mental issues.

I really don't like the way the women in the violin section are giving him dirty looks. To me, that callousness is a lot more disgraceful than the soloist getting a little too emotionally swept away by his music making.
