Been there on vacation, the smell of those escalators is amazing.
These things are impressive. I knew this one from when I lived in Antwerp. Now I live in "the other harbour town" Rotterdam and here there's a similar tunnel! I didn't find an elevator. The tunnel is more interesting for cycling as its cycling only, pedestrians ans cars have other tunnels.
The elevator has a separate entrance in a separate building. It's kind of obscured and hard to explain where to find them outside, but you ride right up to it when you travel through the tunnel and reach the end of it near the escalators. Take the elevator up to ground level and remember where the entrance is ;)
I personally would love to live out in those wonderfully bicycle friendly places... I don't get to enjoy my commutes nor pleasure rides as much here in the U.S.A.
I get to ride some bike trails and some country roads and feel relaxed however it seems few and far between these days
As one might see my wife and I ride recumbent tadpole trikes which I'm not going to lie I'm more uncomfortable riding since my friend James Dobson was struck and killed on his tour... I would love to have the infrastructure that you have... that would bring a whole level of enjoyment back into riding
"The U.S.A." is too diverse to make a blanket statement like cycling isn't enjoyable there. The Netherlands is tiny in comparison and 99% built up and agricultural landscape, there's hardly any trails and country roads at all. I get similarly jealous when I watch a channel like Dustin Klein here on youtube for example.

Since then, about 2.5 million British people died through lack of exercise (about 80,000 people a year). That over 80,000 times higher. Strange world when one fire get 80,000 times more attention than someone dying on their sofa?
Theres a similar tunnel in London, GB called the "Greenwich Foot Tunnel" but only has a single staircase and lift at each end, no escalators...
Every time the life doors open, people look surprised that there are other people coming out of the lift, and they need to move out of the way!

Amazing! My city is starting to add some bike infrastructure in the past few years but still, there is a long way to go.
Taking Wallonia out of the equation, I think much of the country is. To me, it was a pleasure cycling through much of the province of (Belgian) Limburg
Great video. Wooden escalators were banned in the UK after the King's Cross fire in 1987. Also our anti-cycling and pro-health and safety culture would mean that cycles would not be allowed on the escalator.

Quite a few riders wearing helmets (rare for your videos) , but also seem to be mostly road bike riders... Does this tunnel lead to or from a major road ride?
In Belgium they wear more helmets in comparison to the Netherlands were helmets are a very seldom sight.
I only saw helmets on three types of people: kids, cyclists who were actually on a race bike, and (elderly) people on electric bikes. On e-bikes they are actually required by law to wear helmets, as those things can go up to 45km/h. In other cases, we dont wear helmets either in Belgium
@@StratosTitan slight correction: e-bikes (limited to 25km/h) don't require helmets. speed pedelecs (limited to 45km/h) do. e-bikes are considered bikes with assitence while speed pedelecs are considered (light) motor vehicles

In Los Angeles if you ride the escalator with a bike, someone will yell at you to use the stairs. Which is find for a light weight "race" bike. But really sucks if you ride a heavy commuter/city bike.
In San Francisco the escalators are always broken and/or covered in human poop.

Those wooden escalators are death traps. The Kings Cross fire shows why.
Nobody smokes or litters anymore so they're no longer such a risk. In the inquiry following the fire London Transport was found to have an appalling maintenance record for their escalators; the ones in question had a vast build-up of cigarette butts and rubbish accrued over several years. Commuters were constantly dropping lit cigarette ends down the escalators.
This was never meant for bikes but for pedestrians. It's called 'Sint-Annatunnel - Voetgangerstunnel'
We have a near-identical tunnel in Newcastle. Each end used to have 2 escalators & 1 lift. Recently, they closed the tunnels in a project that overran by 5 years, & when it was closed they replaced these with... 1 escalator & 2 lifts! The bore for cyclists is on the far side of the tunnel from the lift, which connects to the bore for pedestrians, clearly demonstrating that it was originally intended that cyclists would use the escalators. The local council seem to think this is unsafe, but your video clearly proves them wrong.
The escalator is for pedestrians going down, one of the lifts is for pedestrians going up & the other lift is for cyclists. This gives the tunnel the pedestrian capacity of a single lift, & a very low-quality & inefficient lift made of cheap parts from China at that. They are also very unreliable: when I went, the cycle lift at each end wasn't working, & cyclists had to use the pedestrian lifts.
The conception that it is unsafe to take a bicycle by any vertical transport other than a lift is because in Britain cycle traffic flow is always negligible so capacity is never an issue (although when the tunnel was built, over a quarter of the area's population cycled to work, so in the past it was). We neglect to consider that over on your side of the channel, cycle traffic flow is not negligible & capacity is an issue. If the escalator hadn't been a safe & high-capacity way of moving bicycles & their riders long distances vertically, the Dutch would've invented one by now.
Is it not easier/safer just to use the lift with the bicycles?
Some people find it quicker to take the escalator than wait for the lift.
Easier, sure a little bit, though you get used using stairs/escalators with bikes when your country/city is bike friendly, the thing is that it's just faster to use the escalator over the lift.
