World class crunching old school hardcore that sounds fresh as a daisy. Blistering riffs galore. Superb rhythm section. Best bass tone on a long knife record I think. Snarling brutal vocals. This band is criminally under appreciated. The best punk/ hardcore band of the last 10 years. You can't ignore the PI influence, but they have more in their locker. Superb stuff!
if Poison Idea and Turbonegro had a baby ... this would be it. This is killer. And not just any Poison Idea ... this totally captures the vibe on Blank, Blackout, Vacant. Just awesome.

I don't know if this is an East vs. West thing, but Long Knife is so much better than all these "old school" styled bands here on the East Coast. The bands around here are really what I call "middle school" because they copy the style of NYHC from the late 80s and early 90s. Same old repetitive riffs and breakdowns that are older than the musicians playing them. Maybe Long Knife is so good because they haven't taken the "punk" out of "hardcore punk" unlike these NY bands who forgot that the roots of HC are in punk.
Yep. They play the "cheat beat" , or "banana" core. The bass drum and guitar skip notes to make it easier and lazier to play fast. The Bold album is a good example of when this became common. But it gives the music a hollow lurch, the energy or real hardcore is lost. "Na na -na - na na" pattern repeated. These boys do it right, they play every note.
Most of it's just kids trying to break out of their respective mental constraints the best way they know how. The Greats..."Greats" will always be inimitable and new Greats will come along without knowing what they're doing is great. I'm just here for the ride, like a long downhill slope and some fresh greased bearings.
Their singer is fucking awesome, saw Long Knife at a fest and he had a shirt of The Hitcher on and we talked about horror movies, and the esotericism behind The Hitcher. Later that night their set kicked major ass. Love the underlying depraved horror theme/imagery in the music.
