- If you don't follow the K-Pop scene, you might not know 23-year-old Korean singer/rapper CL. She became famous in Asia as a member of the girl group 2NE1 but is now going solo. Backed by Scooter Braun, she's making a push in America this year and we imagine you'll be seeing a lot more of her very soon.
To get familiar we caught up with CL to talk about her US takeover and plans for the future. But after talking to her about whether or not her group broke up and if she'll sex up her image to gain traction in the US, we had a less serious conversation with her about her favorite American food and why she considers herself an "open book."

SAMSUNKYU 2000 really? if i close my eyes when i listen to CL speak english, i can't even tell she's Korean. she really doesn't have much of a Korean accent at all..
I'm only worried, in this interview she has a choke talk... maybe she is kinda fluent....And this interview was from almost a yeaaaar ago... there is somewhere in youtube, another interview that she did on a podcast/radio (by the end of last year) and we can see her english improving.
Everytime she opens her mouth, i get more and more inspired and interested in what she has to say. She just has that mysterious yet intelligent vibe to her. I never get bored watching her interviews even though i can probably guess a few answers from questions which she answers before, but it's always a joy to see her speak her mind :)

Why are people getting upset over CL saying "like" and "um" a lot?? English isn't her first language have you ever tried speaking another language without messing up or trying to figure out how to say the next word? She's probably trying real hard to say the words correctly and instead of sitting silently she'll say um or like.

like and um are just words to use in between thinking, and since she knows a lot of languages and has to translate things in her head, it's not surprising O:. it's extremely impressive to me, she gives me inspiration to learn other languages.
Even native speakers say "um" and "like" a lot, it's not like because it ain't her main language. I am like that with both Spanish and English and Spanish is my first language but English is basically my main!

Kpop you don't even need to be Korean to sing Korean songs. They have Chinese, Japanese, Taiwanese, and Thai people that are famous in Kpop. Even Americans, 3 members in SNSD are Americans. I like CL, she's creative and seems like she does her style because it's what she legit likes, and not something her company is trying to force her on.

usually people saying some racist stuff here come from some american minority. Its interesting how specially african-american people use to bash asians like if they was under them. Is supposedly justified by the slave labor and the wars which brought asians to fill up their spot in street and fields jobs. that's why there's so much racism specially from black people with asians in USA. it's sad since both "races" suffer the same in there. They should work way much better if they praise each other. CL is one rare good example of South Korean without any prejudice against black people. Her inspirational people in music is almost all the time black, she really enjoy black music and you will still find someone black here saying shit about asians or women. I don't get it why people are hating CL because of her accent or her limited vocabulary. English is not her first language, in fact it isn't my first language too, and as person who's not a native speaker , I can say that is very hard to learn proper English. She's trying hard to be successful in the US market, lots of people are criticizing her but I doubt that they can do half of the things she does.

Her personality is so impressive to me! She's so confident, mature, and open to new experiences. As more of an introvert, I find these types of people brave and inspiring. Especially because I notice a lot of female korean artists are shy and giggly in interviews, her boldness and presence really stands out to me.
that's not a fake accent at all. In fact when she speaks korean it has the same ring to it; CL fans will know. Stop judging people based on the first video you see of her, she has more depth than you'd think. Yes she seems to use the word 'like' a lot, but i can assure you she's not a dumb blonde. Different, yes, but there are so many American musicians and artists that make so many different types of music that that statement is just ignorant and grossly biased. It's honestly embarrassing, as a K-pop fan, when other K-pop fans say bullshit like this. So many amazing artists have come out of the States. Belittling them to praise a pop star is just insulting and disrespectful, especially when so many of them inspired these K-pop stars in the first place.
Also, many people in the current US music scene aren't from America. CL won't be the first one. Rihanna's not American. Drake's not American (Unless you count North America as American.) Sia's not American. Ed Sheeran's not American. Lorde's not. Iggy Azalea's not. One Direction are not. Hella pop, hip-hop, and rock figures that are on the top 40 charts in America are not American. So, this is an invalid argument, anyway. Maybe you mean "won't accept an Asian artist" which is a more valid argument. But don't lie and say Americans don't like non-American recording artists, because historically, that's not the case.

Great interview questions! A lot of interviews I've seen ask such simplistic questions that fail to get the artists very engaged. This one reveals a lot of stuff about CL that I didn't know before, and it shows that she is a really great inspiration! I've been a big fan for a while now, but I can't wait for US debut! She talks like that bc she learned French, English, Japanese, and Korean. Those languages have diff accents on their own. Have one person learn all of them and still continue to use them on a regular basis and you will get a slightly diff accent than everyone else.
