Wow! Love goin back through the video archives. Shut down early tonite to rest my arm and figured it would be a good nite to scroll back through some older videos. Glad I did Gotta make one of these
thank you for making this by hand, i really like your ethos, it’s the smith that makes the tools, not the other way around. and as someone starting out smithing i appreciate you giving your time to help others, and show us that we can make the tools to make the things we want, what a lesson.
This video is a huge confidence boost for me personally as I’ve always felt swage blocks were rightfully expensive and not in my wheelhouse of skills. On a previous video I wrote a critical comment (and your reply gained my respect due to the way you “smithed” it) but this video and what you say during it is something many smiths would benefit from. The way you explain all of your tools have been collected/created over a decade, how beginning smiths shouldn’t be overwhelmed when they see a shop like yours and my favorite line: it’s the smith that makes the tool not the tools that make the smith. God bless and thank you.
Roy, you must be part machine! What an effort! After that a long hot epsom salt bath, a dram or two relaxing fluid and a long and deep sleep is well deserved!
I was always told "It's a poor workman who blames his tools" so I agree very much with you you both Roy and John..... I'm going to have a go at this just for the challenge.
Excellent video, I don't need one, but I think I may have to make one. I especially liked your thoughts one being the master of your tools and not the other way around.
+Black Bear Forge thank you so much for taking the time to watch John! Means a lot to me sir. This project would definitely be easier with power equipment or a striker for some help LOL
+Black Bear Forge yep I think so too! Some people forget including myself all too often that Smith of long ago did all this by hand. And a lot of times it is easier and more efficient by hand versus tooling up.
Good Morning , Roy I liked the Video , good information that I haven't thought about , but I see that it is important to keep up with you (Our) favorite Videos and to have it come up before it is on is a great way to keep up ! Thanks for giving this important stuff out to us , And Yes I do get a notice that you have a New Vid coming, more and down to 10 minutes before it is on ! . Have a Blessed Day and be Safe !
Morning Mr Roy. What a huge undertaking by hand ... alone! Just wow! I know I'm late to the party or I'd forgotten I'd watched before? IDK but here we be still as relevant today as b4 and will be 50yrs into the future. And yes it was a RUclips suggestion watch. God love you brother and watch over your family Crawford out🙏🏻🔥⚒️🧙🏼♂️ Hey guys!!! Y'all remember this price of forklift tine? Yeah man let's forge a Swedge block like Roy did. Guys.,. Guys wait, where y'all going? Guys! 🦗🦗🦗🦗
That was awsome! I love it. And it seemed to be much easier than I thought. Of course you were the one swinging the hammer. But it forged fairly well. Good job
Thanks for this video.. Been trying to figure out what to do to make my own swage block.. This opens up what I feel now should have been obvious to me. Haha. Thank you very much. God bless!
Outstanding video. I especially enjoyed the segue in the middle. Everyone looks at the smith; what power hammer do you have? Everyone looks at the photographer; what camera do you use? No one looks at the chef; what pots and pans do you have? I've been working on some items the last couple days. Takes me a fair enough of time to make it work out. I know if I had a nice big press or power hammer, it would take me minutes. But still, I bang them out because it's something I want to do.
As per usual, I love your video! I'm just going to go ahead and add that the BEST part of the video was the metal pointer/hand you used at the end HAHA love it!
Nice work! Been going over in my head (for about a week now) how to get this done in my shop.. really needing one of these so thanks for the great video miss the commentary tho haha 😉 keep em comin!
I would love to make one of these, but I just don't think I have the stamina for that amount of heavy hammering. But I do have the access and the ability to machine one, so I think I will cheat a little and go that route. I have had to drop hammer weight down to about a pound and a half so I can hang on to the darn thing. I guess I will have to stay at the smaller project level. But I do enjoy hammering hot metal, even if I am making nothing in particular.
Bigger is better I feel for your arm looking good. Really big wack almost no yack miss the yack but enjoyed it and reminded me that it can be done with a little work. Thank you and God Bless 📖✝
Wow I've never seen anyone forge a swage block before great job on it btw! I was wondering is a 15mm thick piece of mild steel thick enough to forge one? Thanks Paddy
Christ Centered Ironworks I do too. Hahaha. reminds me of the puppet in Beerfest where he tries to stick it up his nose. lol crap now I need to make myself a creepy finger damn you Roy
Oh yea, a striker with a 8lb or larger would make things a bit easier but then you would have to make two of them,,lol. Or should I say two would have to be made if I was the striker........
I guess a good way to explain it would be, you have to do the hard work to make future work easier. Spending money to make money can only be done of you make money before spending. 😂
As I watch I first thought was you were hammering it sideways. Eyes are getting old. As you progress to the smaller tools I see it is pounded on the flat side. Don’t own a forge yet but I enjoy your videos.
About tools please copy my portable band saw and make plans so others can buy plans Mine is simply the best their is. Let my plans help others Thanks Roy

That is one heck of a nice swage block. Especially considering you did it solo, no striker and minimal tooling.

Please make one John
Plz
Yep. That's awesome. I never would've thought a thick block would get up to forging temperature. Thank you. Thinking outside of the box is key.
I bet you slept good that night! You made my shoulder hurting just watching

I really appreciate the way you do your work and how you talk through the work. It’s like being taught in person. Much respect, my friend. Thanks!
That's a fantastic looking swage block Roy!

On your own? Bloody hell mate. Well done

You are right about not letting tools rule Thanks

That was awsome! I love it. And it seemed to be much easier than I thought. Of course you were the one swinging the hammer. But it forged fairly well. Good job
You never cease to amaze me Roy! That was a great idea for a project. It turned out well to.
+William Timmons Thank you I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Great project. Glad you did it by hand.
Another great video Roy ! Your honesty makes your teaching worthy. Thanks.

Got into blacksmithing to make my own tools cause I'm tired of not having many tools 😁
It's a good craft to be in then 😊

You have been one of my main videos that I watch keep the in coming buddy just when I think I've seen it all you amaze me with something like this
looking good, hope to see it complete soon, I miss the commentary, but this was pretty straight forward, nice job !
Wow this is very cool thanks Roy.
Really cool video! Thanks for sharing
you should look into a ribbon burner ive heard they are far quieter than the forced air burners and still get to forge weld temps easily
I would love to make one of these, but I just don't think I have the stamina for that amount of heavy hammering. Great video Roy... keep up the good work
That's a beauty Roy, have to look at making one of them.
Looking good.....I going to have to make one myself someday
+Len Brandstad yep it was definitely a fun and tiring project!
Great work Roy
How’s the Carole tunnel Roy? That hammer looks brutal. Couldn’t stop thinking about it the whole video. My fore arms ache watching you.
Carple tunnel, stupid auto correct.
Bigger is better I feel for your arm looking good. Really big wack almost no yack miss the yack but enjoyed it and reminded me that it can be done with a little work. Thank you and God Bless 📖✝
+F F C Rick God bless you and thank you for taking the time to watch. Trust me there's plenty of yak-yak videos coming LOL
Where's the link to the big and beautiful power hammer. I like your vids. Always learn something.
Wow I've never seen anyone forge a swage block before great job on it btw! I was wondering is a 15mm thick piece of mild steel thick enough to forge one? Thanks Paddy
Yes 15mm would work although it would be a fairly shallow depression
I like it, great idea👍
Nice work Roy, what do you use for pickling solution? Thanks for showing us how to make a swage block.
+Sable Wolf I'm going to use some cleaning vinegar
Thanks for the information.
now that was some work
I quit .that looks like a lot of work😅 Great video. A lot of good points brother. Including the creepy finger lol
+Ben Toombs I think the creepy finger ads a little extra something to the videos LOL
Nice!
if you lived closer i would offer my waste oil foundry to heat that big piece of steel, would get it hotter for cheaper! nice show good sir!!!
Another new intro? WOW! You guys have been busy
Just curious, why is there a spotted chupacabra in ur quench tank!? Great video though!
starange it was 930 at night wen i was watching it on january 29 2020 huh
930 am 12Jan'23 here. 🙏🏻🔥⚒️🧙🏼♂️
Why not use your hold down tool instead of fighting with holding it in place?
+Donald Roberts it slipped my mind it was quite late by the time I got to this step. Way past my bedtime LOL
Alright the pointy thingy again
I guess a good way to explain it would be, you have to do the hard work to make future work easier. Spending money to make money can only be done of you make money before spending. 😂
Those hand signals though....
As I watch I first thought was you were hammering it sideways. Eyes are getting old. As you progress to the smaller tools I see it is pounded on the flat side. Don’t own a forge yet but I enjoy your videos.
That’s way cool!! Someday I’ll try to make one. Have to start feeding my forge steroids!! Lol
About tools please copy my portable band saw and make plans so others can buy plans
Mine is simply the best their is.
Let my plans help others
Thanks Roy
not gonna lie. when its yellow hot it looks like cheese.
Lol I can’t take your finger stick seriously hahahaha super distracting.
Waaay to much rambling on about nothing and hardly any actual forging. 😢
