    Great installation review. Looks very nice and while clearly custom, the fit and finish is near stock. The 5100 mounting is perfect, and I like the base of the unit in the glove box.

    Pascal, I have my sights on replacing my Grand Cherokee in not too distant future with a JL but was not seeing a lot of good ham radio install ideas until I stumbled on your approach which I really like. I too don’t want to be drilling lots of holes in a new Jeep. Great video production. Thanks. 73.

    I do not own a Jeep, planning installation in my Ford Superduty. I was looking for suitable radios (brands and configurations), and ideas on how to make the nicest and cleanest installation possible. Not only did you achieve this but you also had an amazing how to video and clearly explained along the way how you did it. Fantastic video sir, thank you for sharing.

    Thanks for making this video! I was just scouting for options to mount my ID-5100A in my 2019 JLU, and I think you’ve come up with the only good way to do it. I hadn’t thought of putting the rig in the glove box, but I’m definitely going to do so now after seeing yours. My NMO antenna (Larsen 2/70) is likely going to go on the Mopar a-pillar bracket though, because I have an aftermarket tire carrier which wouldn’t work with that antenna mount plate. Anyway, I’m off to order the 67 mount bar. Thanks again! 73.

    What a well made video. You really found some funky stuff to get the job done, that cb bar and that tire rack!!! Also i had no idea that cable came with removable connectors. I have two questions. First, when you transmit in the icom at full power which i assume is 50W,do you get interference over the car radio wben it is both on and off. Also, i have a 67 design system, how did you get the head unit bracket to mount up Thanks, great job

    • @Laboenligne
      @Laboenligne  3 года назад

      Hi Anthony, thank you. First answer, no interference at all and I'm connected directly to the battery and I added an extra ground on the tire rack with OxGuard coumpound to have a good contact, all shown in the video. Second answer, I contacted 67 design for help in the beginning, and got a mount with to screws that fit perfectly the ICOM IC-5100 face plate holder, look form 4:25 in the video, but I can't find it on the manufacturer website, you will need to contact them to ask. Hope this helps. 73

    Very nice installation! One point that isn’t clear in the narrative or the pictures - it looks like your fuses are underneath your dash. You didn’t say whether or not you placed fuses close to your battery. You need fuses there to protect the wiring from the battery into the passenger compartment. If you get a short or a wire chafe in any part of the with between the fuse holders and the battery to ground, it will turn into a red hot heating element and burn the vehicle to the frame. I’ve seen it.

    CAUTION:
    That CB bar comes close to your forehead as you sit in the seat. I have one in my JL and need to wrap some foam rubber around it for safety. If you are under 5'10" it may not be as significant. You can easily assess where the CB bar will be just by removing the top and evaluating where it will mount.
    Also, a lot of the after-market antenna accessories are not compatible with the JL if you have the factory heavy duty tire carrier.

    • @Laboenligne
      @Laboenligne  4 года назад +1

      True, I did bump my head the first time I came in the truck, I have to be careful when climbing in. When seated it's ok but I hope the seat belt will hold me down in case of an accident. Maybe it will be better to install a smaller radio. I'm 6'1" but I drive with the seat set to the max distance from the dash. 73 Pascal VA2PV

    Getting a ham radio together for a Jeep is turning into a nightmare for me.
    I have a reinforced Mopar tailgate system on my JL that has a 1/2" hole in it, but it's too thick and not big enough for 5/8" UHF so I need to find some kind of adapter that I can mount to the hole in the tailgate and cannot find one anywhere.
    Also, have a Comet 4 meter cable, but I'm afraid it's not going to be long enough, should I get the 5 meter, or will the 4 meter work?
    If I'd have known it was going to be this aggravating getting this together, I probably would have bought a handheld.

    • @Laboenligne
      @Laboenligne  3 года назад +1

      Hi Doug, it took me months to figure out my ham radio set up into the Jeep and since it was the new JL model I had to wait for the availability of after market solutions. I think my Rock Hard tire support extended could work for you even if you have the reinforced tail gate system. You should check it out. What surprising is that my Jeep installation was the most expensive setup I ever had in a car. A solution for you would be an antenna that is using the 3/8 system, just like CB, then the 1/2 hold will work, see what I used for the 10 meter antenna, the challenge is to find a VHF/UHF antenna that support this mount. I think only MJF have an available model. 73 Pascal VA2PV
