  • Last year's record storms led to the return of the long-time dry Tulare Lake as waters flooded into the basin, putting vast swaths of farmland underwater. Today, it's looking quite different.

So sad, I wish they would make it permanent water storage

Maybe it will fill again more next year. On the other hand maybe they should consider som way how to get, during wet season, as much excess water as they can get from as far as they can get and divert it to the lake. The first step could be that excess water from Millerton lake would be diverted through existing canal to Kings river and then divert water from Kings river to Tulare basin. It would not be nearly enough, but it will be, IMHO better than nothing and certainly better than just releasing it to Pacific Ocean. And if it would not go to the lake, then it would take significant detour which would mean more evaporation and more water refilling aquifer.

Its a natural reservoir... Such a wasted opportunity. Its such an obvious solution to all of this, plus adding more water storage.

You got it. They are destroying cheap food production at record pace across the country, with hundreds of sites destroyed each year, but the places like this that provide upscale food to the wealthy, they are protected at all costs.

"It's fascinating to see Tulare Lake reclaim its historic presence after over a century, reminding us of the delicate balance between nature and human intervention. Perhaps what we perceive as 'normal' is, in fact, the lake's resurgence to its natural state, challenging our notion of control over the environment."

So they built houses in an old lake bed? Tulare was the smaller part of a larger extinct lake

The lake was drained to create farm land, the massive amount of runoff from last year's heavy snow overfilled the reservoirs on the Kern River and the drainage channels couldn't handle the amount of water coming in. The lake has reappeared before this time and will do so again.

Most cities in the west are built in areas that flood but are dry most of the time.
