Hey @ProfessorViral. I was wondering if you could do a analysis of another anime by the name of Gun Grave. It is a series said to that takes place in the same universe as Trigun, except it takes place on Earth instead of on the planet Gunsmoke.

I really wish there was a season 2 of gangsta and an OVA for the Marco Adriono side story. It would have shed more light on characters both large and small. The unfortunate fact of the matter is that Kohske, the creator of the series is suffering from a rare form of MS and had trouble writing/drawing due to being fatigued very easily and is practically blind in her left eye. If you can please read the Manga! The story is really good!

Damn, that's sad to hear. I have a growing list of manga, but I can for sure put Gangsta on it and move it up a bit with that in mind. I'm sure it's more in depth than the anime, and fixes the issues I harped on here, so it would be nice to read I think

I agree the last episode ended so abruptly. I think it was because the animation studio went bankrupt. Also the manga is on hiatus a lot due to the mangaka’s medical condition so I think even if the studio had enough funds, they’d have to end the story abruptly anyways because the source material stops abruptly midway through the new arc.

Gangsta is more of a character drama set in aa unforgiving, divided world. A story about power struggles, diversity but most importantly the cracks of a world divided of the mortal and the Twilights. Whether that be gangs, mutinies, senseless violence, the story of Gangsta. hits more with the divided ideologies of its characters. Hate Crimes, Abuse, Physical/Sexual, to Racism even topics of Slavery. It’s a story about wolves in sheep’s clothing, as wolves are hired to hunt those wolves as those so called “sheep” become more savage than those wolves. The manga is a must read.

Nice comparison ! Always happy to see more Black Lagoon content. One thing I personally like very much about Black Lagoon but find hard to find in other anime is the iconic mid 90s setting and how all locations/characters/events tie fairly accurately into our real-world-history.
One anime I can recommend that deals alot with the darkness within humans is Monster. Which arguably has even better character writing than Black Lagoon (or most anime) but none of the gunslinging action. But considering its reception theres a high chance you've watched it already.
And regarding Black Lagoon... becoming a manga channel is always an option ;)

    • @ProfessorViral
      @ProfessorViral  3 года назад +10

The 90's setting of Black Lagoon does help it so much. Everythings just starting to advance technologically, but not quite booming. And they're still stuck in the past in Roanapur anyway, which creates such a unique feel, especially for Balalaika.
I actually haven't seen Monster yet, I need to but the episode count always makes it hard for me to cover in theory, so I've been waiting for a good time, that seems to never come. But, I will some day for sure!

The start of this video kinda reminds me on how I came to love Black Lagoon. The first time watching it, I was just drawn in by the violence and stylish/cool setting and characters. Only after rewatching it, I could realize the deep story about Rock and the City of the living Dead. But maybe that's just because I happened to watch some analysis videos of Black Lagoon in the meantime :D
Thus, thanks to you for making my favourite Anime even better 😅

I really liked the Greenback Jane arc. It didn't do much for the main plot line outside of Eda, and added nothing to the main cast of characters, but it put a lot of character into the city. I thought it was nice seeing the lagoon crew mucking about in nondescript Roanapur shenanigans, instead of dealing with the major political struggles of the city, or dashing off somewhere else to do their business. It let me understand the weird madness of the wider city, and enjoy the setting a whole lot more.

Ngl I've never seen Gangsta but like you, a fan of BL, I'm gonna give it a shot even if it doesnt match up to BL's legacy. On another note tho, love to see the BL content my guy 👌, Rock, imo, has to be the most relatable as a character, a good person in a shitty and unfair world and like Benny said in the Vampire Twins arc, stories like the twins or even with later on with Yukio, dont have happy endings. Getting something close to a happy ending in RBT was about as close as it gets but we all know what it cost to get that outcome. Lies, manipulation, and a flurry of bullets, and in the end that wasnt even the worst part. The worst (heartbreaking) part of it for me was seeing that good man in Rock LITERALLY start to turn to the dark side. BL is a gem and I really wish there were more anime out there like this. Nonetheless tho, love the content as always! 🙏

Not me binging your videos instead of sleeping, dropping down into the comments to suggest Yakuza again, hehe. But… 👀
Yakuza 0, Yakuza Kiwami 1, maybe Kiwami 2 or Song of Life, definitely Like a Dragon would be my suggestions. If playing them isn’t your style, I think there’s cutscene movies uploaded that you can just kick back and enjoy?
I wouldn’t compare them to Black Lagoon, although my gripe with the series that Black Lagoon has down pat is lack of more badass female leads. But it leans more toward a showcase of masculinity which I’m 💯 fine with because most of the writing is simply *chef’s kiss.*
I’ve never seen Gangsta. Peeps have recommended it to me, but lately my complete and undivided attention has been sucked into the marvel that is Yakuza. 😌
Never really been one for fighting games, but the story of this series made learning well worth the effort. In a way I can relate to a couple of the protagonists because I’ve experienced trauma and loss, and I know what rock bottom feels like. And the only way to look is up. And the life experience taught by some of these characters has helped me out of some ruts. I could ramble for days about this series, tbh. ☺️
From the culture to the martial arts to the dynamic intros and the soundtracks, the character development and the accuracy of each decade the games take place in, makes it feel authentic and real enough to look past the unrealistic (game logic) bits.
The memes are top tier too 🍻

Rock’s plan was also to put Roanapur on the map so the US would swoop in an destroy the drug trade in the city. This plan also fails. Then there is the fact that the entire job forced Rock into using the strategies of people he hates. Playing with the lives of the Americans, Revy, Garcia and Fabiola. He snaps out of his power trip but realises that even though he "won" he went to far to do it.

I would recommend Kino's Journey 2003, it's OVA and 2 short films (they're all the same universe, 2017 is a reboot, but maybe include that to compare), and Canaan.
Kino is a masterpiece of non-linear storytelling, coming off like Quentin Tarantno reorganized the script, but with more emphasis on philosophy than violence.
Canaan is an anime sequel to Shibuya Scramble, a VN about a terrorist attack in Japan, now the anime follows Maria, a character who was saved by her father, the scientist from the VN. She is now a journalist in Shanghai who finds herself in the middle of a war between the same terrorist group and Canaan, a merc she became friends with in the middle east a few years back.

@@ProfessorViral the manga is great, after finishing the show I just had to read the source material, highly recommend it. They flesh out the early arc a bit more in the show, most likely to fill out the runtime, but the arcs increase in detail as they progress. There are some minor changes made but the most noticeable difference is the order in which the arcs occur. You seemed a bit critical on the Greenback Jane arc, I’m sure its purpose was to add some levity after the Twins arc, but in manga it’s to establish Eda and the CIA as major players as it takes place right before Robertas Blood trail.

This was a bit more than just "little" bias, but it is your opinion, so can't really argue with that.
But I think Gangsta had a certain charm to it, character design being one of them which I don't see why you focused so much on that as if it isn't realistic to the real underground world. It's a common theme that is shown in all sorts of media, that good-looking people are part of how that side of the world prefers and operates with.
Worrick does what he does beacuse he's good-looking. Nick only knows war and killing, so, it would make sense that he finds joy in that (as twisted and sick as it is).
Now them having a tragic background and showing it to the audience isn't necessarily a bad thing in their case, beacuse the show begins of them being just simple handymen who'd take any job for money and thats the extend of their partnership. The thing is, Worrick wasn't always nihilist or someone who enjoy being a prostitute. I think he does what he does beacuse he's just surviving and he's still alive and breathing.
In Nick's case, simply put, if he wasn't born a twilight, his life would've been completely different, maybe better even, as he showed potential for learning and seemed to value his friendship.
Alex is obviously relatable to many people (unfortunately) and her brother's mystery just adds more to her mystery as a character.
Also, Nick killing Worrick (Wallace's) parents wasn't just for drama, I think it had more depth to the whole master/slave relationship and their dynamic as friends.
Now the rest of the cast did need some work, side characters weren't so memorable but the setting of Gangsta world isn't so far of reality. Racism, drug/sexual/physical/mental abuse, classism and prejudice, corruption and war are all very real issues. Yes, if given time and money (stuido going bankrupt and manga writer getting sick) Gangsta could've been memorable because it does have an interesting story and set of characters.
And that was more bias to Gangsta I guess, but as enjoyable as BL was, I couldn't like the main characters as much beacuse it did seemed like they betray each other at the first chance they get, Revy and Rock constantly fight over who's morals and ideals are more correct became exhausting and one thing you mentioned, plot armor protecting BL cast who shouldn't have superhuman powers and are grounded to real world laws and whatnot YET they've survived the impossible. Gangsta does a great job showing that the humans are weak and easily killed BUT so are the normal twilights and the ones who can fight. The four families control over the city and politics between them might not be for everyone but it was intriguing enough, just wish they could explore and explain it more.

It's a really great video with good talk, so i don't think it needs any of my comments. As i have nothing to add. Just agreeing.
I'm sorry for going slightly off topic a few times during the comment, but i really felt like i had to say them
Gangsta. was watched by me as something in similar section to Black Lagoon. It looses to Black Lagoon in all aspects, as you said. And it was watched on such ease, as one evening show. When Black Lagoon is the thing i rewatched many times. I've putted on pause to just stop and think, and manny times get surprised by how good it is with leading it's story or showing something. And it got huge benefit to it from the artstyle. It still has artstyle and it's quality linked to elder times, what i truly adore.
You can skip from here, the somewhat off topic part
I watched everything i found in similar section. Jormungand was a story which surely had more to it than Gangsta.(Even though i went and read manga for Gangsta. as it got me interested in some side characters, and just due to lack of reading material at the moment). One more anime which i found quite catching, which is not really something to call similar to Black Lagoon due to too many differences, is Banana Fish. The anime was good, tho in my opinion it had a really bad interpretation of the manga where it came from, they made a gay romance out or gang story :/ have nothing against, just that manga had the perfect propositions, to stay at the genre of shojo. And I'm happy that in that long way i found my favourite manga, but it was just weird putting them together as they are totally different. This is more to that you said that when you look at anime you look at anime, which is correct in my opinion. As you're not talking of the whole story and the sense and bla bla bla in here, only the matter of anime showing it. Thank you a lot, and a bunch)
    Till here
P.s. Datch and Benny ship :"D you didn't make it. You created the name. i was surprised how far my shipping colleagues went. It's kinda funny that they came up with that, with how much nonsense it is)

I'm sorry you went into this expecting Black Lagoon. I suggested it as I feel it covers the grittier subject matter much better than BL or Jormungand ever did.
Where those showed us Roanapur from the outside in a plane or ship, Gangsta delves into the grime and grit of the streets. Everyone here is just another Revy in a Roanapur that they can't escape. It seems you don't like it because there are no heroes with good intentions or a light at the end of the tunnel, and to further cement the hopelessness of change, the only character with good intentions has her actions crushed under foot by the the rival gangs. Though, I definitely don't think Nick & Worick are good guys, I definitely disagree that they "got their kicks off" killing Alex's pimp. They just seemed glad to be getting paid to kill a piece of shit.
You can easily see how all the things that make these character's "Special" aren't that ridiculous - compared to most anime anyway.
You call Worick special, but he could be relatable to any middle class kid who got good grades but had an abusive parent and ran away (but in this case was killed for drama). Even though he came from such presige, he's still workin the streets. Showing that it doesn't matter where you come from, you can always end up on the bottom. If you notice, he's never close to fight and uses a gun to make sure his body doesn't get hurt, as it's literally his job to make sure he looks hot.
Nicolas' story isn't much different from Jonah's, they're both child soldiers which isn't hard to imagine. And with most of his fights being h2h he needs to be in top shape at all times.
& I know a lot of women who relate to Alex, and her battle with drug addiction. And her hot bod is most likely from illegal plastic surgery.
You're also ignoring all the political gang interplay over the control of the city, or how Twilights could be both a depiction of the Autism spectrum and segration of a "different" people. These were my favorite parts personally.
I also don't see how you felt the story was cluttered with characters. I thought it had just the right amount for a story about the city, while Nicolas and Worick were just used to explore and explaine it. Though, I can definitely understand how that could be jarring when expecting a comparison.
*But after this I'm really interested to hear your oppinion of MONSTER, if you ever get to it. I understand if you don't.

Anyone find it odd he doesn't know any reasonably attractive dudes who are in shape? Their wardrobes aren't even that different from Rock's.
So no love for the undercurrents of the four families and their roles in the city, yet alone tags lives. Or the plot of one family using tags to try and take out the other three so that tags have no support structure and can be effectively genocided without lifting a further finger. Without the families providing the materials, doc Theo making the meds, Nick & Warrick working on behalf of another family to distribute Celebrare, or a third family assuring them steady work with minimal abuse they would die out.
Nothing for the parallel of the three laws of robotics being the same three laws tags have to obey?
Nick's over the top skills coming from the fact he is constantly ODing on uppers when fighting knowing full well that when they wear off he has to deal with the crash and possibly a still standing opponent. As was seen when he fought Danny a true A/0 tag or during the raid on Bastard. Man is literally willing to shorten his already drastically shorter lifespan (most tags don't make past mid 30's) to help out Warrick because he feels he owes him. Owes him for treating him like a person and not an animal, and the guilt of killing his family and realizing how/why that wrong.
Warrick's eidetic memory is bullshit, but not much more than remembering trivial facts about a South American crime family's inner working because years ago you had to help with a project that took place near their estate. As for his looks, the man is a prostitute of course he is going to look above average. His entire job is being attractive and good in bed. The anniversary of his family's massacre being in the papers isn't that uncommon. 20+ year cold case where a 1%er's entire family got offed in one night is gonna be brought up.
The shitty jokes Warrick and Nick make a classic coping mechanism of people who have been abused. It is to deflect and make situations seem unimportant to make others feel it isn't worth going after and distance yourself from it emotionally.
I could go on about the series, and characters, as well as how they handle their personal traumas and situations they live in. Though, at the end of the day if it wasn't for you, it wasn't for you, and going off about it is meaningless.

This video is trash, comparing two completely different shows with varying degrees of themes and characters. The creator of gangsta watches more drama and mafia type movies, she actually doesn’t watch anime. Stuff like the godfather is a good example on what she bases it on.
