I love that you have the cord end in your shots when working with the unpowered saw. Great forethought to keep the safety comments away.
Thanks, I try to keep the cord in my videos when I remember. It really does help keep the safety comments to a minimum.
Yet here you are along with me now. Commenting on it. Lol
Getting real tired of these pooping ads on YT!
Colin, you time and time again show us so many simple tips that most of us may never think to try. Please keep up your fantastic videos. Just awesome
Thanks for watching!
Thanks Colin - for all your tool tips. So many are reminders of things learned and forgotten! Tip for those of us who forget to release or tension the blade - tape some tags on the saw and plug. All my big tools are mobile, so everything gets unplugged. On the bandsaw, there is a "Tension" tape on body where I need to push the saw, one near the power switch and one at the end of the plug!
Thanks for the tip and thanks for watching!
Great video. Like the idea about using the table saw to start a cut before the bandsaw
Hope it helps! Thanks for watching!
Always lots of great information, I’ve been following you for years now and never been steered wrong, you’re a true craftsman, thanks for sharing!
Just got a bandsaw. Got it set up, and I'm excited to try out some stuff this weekend. Thanks for the great help!
Thanks Colin. That tip for cutting the veneer on the table saw and bandsaw was very handy, as it's something I do often. Many thanks.
Hope it helps! Thanks for watching!
Just got a bandsaw. Great tips. Thanks.
Very cool!! Just ordered my very first bandsaw. Cant wait for it to show up. Finally going to add some true curve cutting capacity to my shop.
I find your videos very helpful in my shop. THE ssubjects you cover are tthe everyday ideas thatarehelpful. Thaks for the time and energy you put into these videos.
You're very welcome, Jill! Thanks for watching!
wow! there is some really good tips thank you Colin. Love your videos
Thank You!
As others have said another set of great tips and tricks and so easily explained. Thanks Colin
You're welcome! Thanks for watching!
Colin, you and I have the same band saw. Mine has been largely ignored for the longest time because I was having the very same problems the you highlighted in the video. So, it's not just MY band saw. Those tips and tricks are a great relief to me. The only problem that I've really had with the Delta was a broken tyre. Replacements could only be sourced, with all the associated costs from the USA. All in all though it's a great and reliable tool. I'll be out there, in the cold, this morning letting off the blade tension. Thanks, Keith
mine too but that cover knob is not factory.
I hope the tips help! Thanks for watching!
I have this same band saw and would really appreciate your advice on what blade tpi for general purpose (ply wood, mdf and soft woods) many thanks, Simon
Band saws, gotta love them.
Thanks for sharing these useful tips.
Hi Colin thank you of the great information. you just keep it simple, i love your youtubes keep up the good work
Band saw drift eats my lunch every time. Thanks for this tip!!!
Hope it helps! Thanks for watching!
Again more good tips and ticks from you Colin especially pre cutting on the table saw !
Cheers, Bram
Hope it helps! Thanks for watching!
Good stuff Colin, I have not seen the same info on anybody else's channel, thanks.
Thank you for this video! I can't say I didn't learn anything. . . matter of fact, you just taught me quite a lot about my bandsaw
Hope it helps! Thanks for watching!
Thanks Colin. Love the way you surreptitiously placed the plug in shot so you wouldn't rile up the safety police :)
Best tips on Bandsaws!
I love that ideas. I did had a issues in the past. Many thanks.
You're welcome! Thanks for watching!
Great video Colin. I learnt a lot from this. I'm off to Bunnings this morning (hardware chain store in Australia) to look for a thin blade for my table saw so that I can use your method to cut veneers from some jarrah planks I have recovered from old pallets.
Great thank You so much
Hi Colin,
I like very much your video. Thanks for the information given. But I especially liked the way you display your bandsaw power chord being disconnected every time yours hands are near the blade. Keeps the nasty comments away!
Always great videos! Thank you so much!
That was very helpful!
Can you do a video on, table legs in trying to do 1x3 legs in a corner pattern. Try to find a way to connect them where they are detachable
Thanks for the great ideals you are a very good teacher
Thank You!
This was uploaded on my birthday!!
Great video Colin. I really like the precut on the table saw idea. I will try that the next time. See you soon. Stay safe. Tim
Hope it helps! Thanks for watching!
When you loosen the band saw blade to prevent flattening the tire - as shown in the video - give it the same number of turns (or half-turns) every time you do it. Then, when you return to the saw later you can give it that same number of turns in the opposite direction to re-tension it. That will automatically return you quite close to the original tension, so you won't have to do more fiddling to get the tension set properly.
Another good fence for the band saw that sets up very quickly (and good for Colin's drift compensation method shown in the video) is one of those 18" or 24" long magnetic bars sold as a magnetic knife holder for the kitchen or a magnetic tool holder for the shop. No clamping, just let the magnet hold itself on the table where you need it.
great idea
Good suggestion. Now what do you suggest to make me remember to loosen the tension every time? LOL.
Good tips.
Thanks for the tip and thanks for watching!
The only time I loosen my band saw blade is when I'm replacing it. I'v been using my band saw for 20 years and have never had a problem with a flat spot. It's a 14" Jet.
Great tips, buddy.👍
Keep up the good work, mate👌
Thanks for watching, Bill! I hope they help.
Why you, it’s the bandsaw info that is paramount!
Best hack is your custom gauge for fast band change (instead screw, cover open)!
Rest of are great too.
Some very useful tips. The problem I have in releasing tension on the blade is that I tend to forget and turn it on and the blade comes off and invariably needs a replacement.
Make a sign to put right next to the power switch on the bandsaw that says 'Check the tension'. That should remind you each time you use the bandsaw.
You could even make a sliding sign like they use on office doors to let people know if they're in or out. On your bandsaw it could read tight / loose. Then when you change the tension at the start or end of the project, slide the sign over and you know what state your blade is in when you come back to the saw.
If you're handy with electronics you could even build in a limit switch into your tension adjuster, when the tension is backed off, it hits the limit switch and a LED could light or a relay could disconnect the power.
I better stop before I make things way too complicated.
I have a tension leaver on my Laguna Bandsaw and made a little sign with a blade kerf on it and place it on the blade saying tension is off when not in use, then I just take it away and set the lever again to use it, simple
Some great tips from Maxx B and June, those should help. Thanks for watching.
You know your a hell of a woodworker when your watch band is made of wood.
Very good observation!
Absolutely great tips for the bandsaw Sir. Also thanks for the knowledge too. I'm trying to save up money this year to get one. It looks like that Delta one is a good choice to get. I'm waiting for sales at Lowes or Home Depot.
You won't regert getting a Delta. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for your expertise Sir
Another Great Video Colin. Nkw I need to get a bandsaw hahah
Just got my first bandsaw for Christmas. It's a small Wen, but hopefully it should be a good intro one! Do you have any tips for ripping wood from small logs?
interesting, i've used that table/band saw combo method for yrs, but i dont think i've seen it on ytu,,, excellent video
Thanks for watching!
Look at Rusty Veinot channel. He has a couple of good videos that talk about the same issues.
Will there be another video with hacksaw bands?
very useful video cheers
Thank You!
Also wow that Bandsaw really left some serious machine marks on that piece of Plywood. You'll have to sand those off for sure bro!!
nice videos but i have a problem ive been using a old 3 wheel bandsaw and latly the blade keeps going of track braking the blades so my wife got me a new parksaide went ok the next day the bottom tyre keeps slipping of now ive looked and looked and few say glue tyre down should solve problem so i went back on old bandsaw glued tyre on tried it works great should i do same to new bandsaw gluing the tyre down as its brand new
Shoud you adjust your guides and back bearing to 1/8 of an inch above your work piece ? My manual says to keep the guide assembly just above the work piece, I notice a lot of wood workers have them at the top of the adjustment
Before compensating for blade drift, it's a good idea to try to eliminate it first by good set up..blade guides, position of blade on top wheel, blade tension, and most of all, a SHARP blade : )
Yup.
Blade used in the video is for cutting curves. Use a wider blade for rip cuts and it will not drift
Hi Colin great video... Can I ask what tpi blade do you prefer for general purpose on the bandsaw in the video?
Is there a way to stop my band saw drift ? Great video
Look up any video with Alex Snodgrass. You will get a totally different perspective on "drift" than shown here. (eliminate it).
I have the exact same bandsaw except yours has fancier knobs than mine!
They're GREAT saws! Thanks for watching.
How can i buy a band saw sir . I need need it for ny project. Please help.....or please tell me the name of blade??
How can you tell when bandsaw tires need to be replaced?
Good one.
You should be able to see noticeable damage to it.
In the old days when they were rubber you could just replace when they were brittle and cracked. Since I changed to polyurethane tires I haven't had to change one, but I check occasionally by turning them by hand while lightly dragging my other hand over them to see if I detect any flat spots or other wear.
@@meanders9221 Thank you, Michael. Very helpful information.
@woodworkweb are you somewhere close (southwest US) where I can get lessons from you personally?
Teach me your ways!!
Sorry, I'm way up on the West Coast of Canada. Try your local Woodworkers guild for lessons. Thanks for watching.
I have two problems with my band saw. 1. My blades run on the upper wheel toward the rear and on the bottom wheel toward the front and I don"t know how to get the blade centered. 2. My blades keep breaking at the seam where they are welded together. Especially on the narrow blades and it is getting very expensive.
1. You should have a knob or lever to adjust that somewhere on your saw.
2. You might be over-tensioning your saw blade or cutting more material then it can handle. Check the manual. Maybe try a different brand of blade.
I agree that brand of blade might be an issue. I crank mine down pretty good. Have never broken one in many years.
Thanks for your helpful response William. I've never had this problem until recently. I've tried tensioning and adjusting. I will replace the blade with a different brand. If that doesn;t work I will try replacing the wheel bands. After that ???
Thanks, Colin for your helpful hints.
You probably know this but I thought I'd mention it. You are using the tracking knob on the upper wheel right? It changes the tilt of the wheel to adjust tracking. If that doesn't help you may have to investigate shimming out the bottom wheel. Good luck.
Sorry for this comment, but there is no such thing as bandsaw drift, if you get drift it only means your bandsaw is not set up properly.
What, pray tell, constitutes a hack?
Colin I learn something extremely handy every time I tune in. Thank you for all you do. You make things so much easier to understand and you don't overcomplicate a procedure. Keep up the great work and again, thank you very much!
Check out Alex Snodgass Method video.
He would be the band saw master his set up method eliminates bandsaw drift
Holy Hannah Montana! I just found/watched his video and learned SO much!
I was seriously about to throw my band saw out until I saw this.
Good tips Colin! I especially like the pivoting fence! I never seen one of those before! Thanks.
Great video, Colin. Thank you. The tip about using the table saw to make a groove for the bandsaw to follow when making veneers is so simple and so clever.
Hope it helps! Thanks for watching!
Hey Buddy, I'm not new to woodworking but just got my first bandsaw and need to know it's potential. Your videos are invaluable... Thanks ;)
Awesome tip and tricks my brother very good ideas to,I love your shirts to they are very nice later :)
Thanks for watching, TJ!
Ive been successful cutting vaneer on my Laguna 14/12 bandsaw with a 5/8" blade
I was re-sawing some 4/4 oak with my Laguna 14/12 and a ⅝” re-saw blade, the blade started drifting badly, one of the ceramic inserts on the bottom saw guide had slid forward. After gluing it back in place with some gel CA glue the blade still kept drifting, the ceramic insert had taken the set out of one side of the blade. I am disappointed with these ceramic saw guides.
@@pedgaro49 im sorry to hear that , im just a hobbyist, i haven't had any issues with my Laguna bandsaw, my brother helped me set it up and its run perfectly
I see that this video is four years old. Hopefully by now you’ve learned how to eliminate blade drift instead of working around it. I learned by watching Alex Snodgrass videos on the topic.
Couldn't it be called a hack.... Saw now??? Ugh bad joke, I'll see myself out. Good video, thanks just getting started with bandsaws.
Мне очень нравится ваш канал!))
i thought i knew everyting....but you just proved me wrong...
Thanks for the tips!! Just got a band saw so all will be very helpful as I’m learning
Can you do a video for what bandsaw blade to use for different projects I'm new to a band saw so I have no idea. Jim
Do you laugh at random times or is Your sense of humor weird?
What t he new bandsaws that have the brush that get rid of sawdust are those good
Thank you for the great tips❤
This was so helpful! My bandsaw always vibrates. I don't use it often and i never loosen the tension.
Are all bandsaw blades intended for 'combination' purposes? i.e. using one blade for cross-cutting, ripping, mitre cutting (along the bias), etc.
A blade with finer teeth should be used for cutting non-ferrous metals e.g. aluminum or copper.
Great tips, thank you
Thanks great video
Very good my friend
Thank you for your videos.. I had been looking forward to a band saw hack video from you! Is the main reason for using a 7 1/4" blade because they are thinner? I have gotten to where I only buy the Diablo blades and really like them.
Thinner is the reason.
For cutting veneers, you want the thinnest blade possible on your table saw.
Awesome tips
Wow I love the Table Saw method first so much better than just straight doing it on the Bandsaw. I'm just curious though, why didn't you use a riving knife on the Table Saw??
Thank you guy for the tips! Very useful! I just got my first band saw! Although I have done other wood work!
Muchas gracias por tu tiempo y habilidades, Colin. Bendiciones desde Monterrey México
👍👍👍
To permanently take care of blade drift without having to rely on goofy clamp on auxiliary fences, I took some time to loosen the table mounting bolts on trunnions, which are a little oversized, tapped the table a smidge and retightens one bolt and ran a sample rip. I kept loosening the one bolt, tapping, and making more trial cuts until there was NO drift. Then I tightened the remaining bolts. Permanent drift solution! I must say that my table's bolt holes were not sufficiently oversized to get the job done so I had to use a rat tail file to elongate them a tad bit to accomplish the task, but the extra effort is well worth it. Hint: bolts are easier to access if you tilt the table as much as you can.
Lesson learned: Keep your bandsaw adjusted correctly so you don't spend your days ripping your hair out over drift and finding ways to counter it.
There's no reason to fight your machines, it takes less time to troubleshoot and fix than it does to damage or waste material and spend time fixing/replacing that and blades are dirt cheap nowadays, keep a few extra on hand.
I'm looking at purchasing a bandsaw and found your tips very useful and worth remembering. Cheers from Australia.
Adding a speed square is a great suggestion. i am new to band saw and found this information very handy.. Thank you so much !!!
which delta model can cut 4 inch x 4inch timber please ? I would like the smallest lightest model to cut 4inch wood, mortice and tenon joints.thank you.
will a 3/8 inch blade drift less than a 1/8 inch blde? i will probably be using 16/18 tpi blade on mine?
Thnx. The pre saw guide from table saw was what i wsd thinking so thnx for showing me.
its called "resaw"....cutting a Kerf with the tablesaw is a good idea.
Thanks for the video. Your white hair tells a lot. I'm just received my first band saw before 10 days and I found it hard to use because I didn't try before. But your video clear allot in my mind.
I will post a video on my channel later for unboxing and first cut.
Thanks again
Very informative thanks Colin. I'm new to bandsaws - I bought a second hand one recently and struggling to get it working with the fence. I'll be trying the looking at establishing the 'angle of straight' and clamping a board down based on the angle. I like the resawing tip with the table saw too - next time I'll get the UK equivalent of Diablo
Where did he get the big tension knob and big spring for bandsaw
So many great tips, thank you for sharing.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
These are great tips. 👍🏽Well done!
Lots of goodies for us, Colin- thanks a lot!
Nice set of tips. Thank you.
