Mark was severely underrated for his service on this show. Guy was a master at keeping a reign on everything and also popping the balloon sized egos of certain people. Also the wit of the man was unmatched, sharp as a tac! Wish he was still around today but it seems somewhat fitting for his character to have just went ‘Fuck it I can’t be arsed with any of you anymore, I’m gone’

What I miss about Marks presence on TV with Buzzcocks, and to a lesser extent with Simon Amstel, was the presence of at least one voice pointing out how absurd all this celebrity culture really was by taking the piss, these days there is so little room for dissenting voices young people get so swept away in the supposed legitimacy of the culture, be it social media or celebrity, and it is all taken so very seriously as there is nobody on a weekly basis on national television puncturing the pomposity of it all.

You know what'd be real nice. It'd be real nice if there was an actual box set of all the Lamarr and Amstell seasons. I would happily pay for such a box set. But apparently the BBC doesn't want my money.
Well, alright, that's a lie - they want to TAKE my money, whether I'm watching their current pitiful offerings or not, but they don't want me to offer my money in exchange for something I actually want.

Lamarr was great, but so were the guests back then. There was generally a mix of real musicians with a good sense of humor (that might not even have been that famous or "current" at the time), not there solely to promote something and comedians that Knew a lot about music, the Amstell years was more about having random air headed pop stars of the moment for Simon to take the piss out of, which was at times really funny, but got boring very quickly. The gags always seemed less forced and more spontaneous back in the Lamarr days in my opinion.

Amstell was a horrible little weasel who found out who the guests were and compiled nasty jokes about them in advance. The guests were unprepared for this and not being professional comedians like Lee Mack or Jimmy Carr many of them floundered. Hughes, Jupitus and Lamarr's humour is much less scripted, much more impromptu and therefore greatly more entertaining.

King Missile, Detachable Penis was actually a song about SDI's. To this say I still hear in my head, Tommy Vance on the Friday Rock Show, saying, 'Off the wall, This is Detachable Penis, King Missile...' from what I recorded from Radio One's Friday Rock Show, circa 1991, on the cassette I had for a good ten years!
