I know this is late, but to answer your question, there is a protein called vanilloid in the free nerve ending. Things such as temperatures above 120 degrees F will cause this to protein to open and an action potential occurs. Because this protein has caused the action potential the signal is sent to a part of the brain that interprets the signal as a pain signal
My skins is cold and my clothes hurt,,but I feel, like my skin is on fire...I have read about allodynia, but my warm hands on my cold arms makes me feel better. I feel I may have thermal allodynia. I have tattoos, did this trigger the immune response? How do I fix it without a Lyrica or other drugs..and why does it knock me out that I need to sleep it off? I have had MRI..all good. Had nerve conduction tests..all good. Had biopsy on my tattoos, sarcoidosis type was the result on one and allergic reaction on another.
Evening Dr John you seem to have grown exponentially since uploading this video. My question for you is; are there any pain receptors on the blood vessels within the brain? Had aneurysm M1 MCA clipping 4 years ago and have endured pain every day since.
@@Campbellteaching Thanks for the reply. Well thats the trouble, they tell me they have never heard of anything like it before? and my neurologist just hit me on the knee with a hammer to see if my reflexes are normal. I am trying to obtain an MRI scan to see if they find anything. I also have Tinnitus. I somehow think they are related, in that the nervous system is over active. Bloody annoying it is. Thanks for your reply, i wont give up looking for answers.
@@videomaster8580 I assume you have excluded obvious things like scalp infections? It is also true that lack of vitamin Bs can have adverse effects on the nervous system.
@@Campbellteaching I think my diets fairly good. I also take a multivitamin. I suppose I could also take B complex supplement as a backup, and a test. The one thing I have not had tested is a scalp infection. The scalp looks ok in my opinion, although a little flaky. Perhaps I can ask to see a dermatologist. Thing is i feel embarrassed keeping going back to the doctors with this problem. Also its very depressing having all these tests and getting nowhere. Im in the process of trying to sort out a private MRI scan, as the upright scanner they use allows different positions of the spine/brain and therefore can see the spine/neck under compression. Thank you for your interest John, if you can think of anything else please let me know.
When you are intolerant to cold, why is it called peripheral neuropathy when in fact the thermoreceptors nerves are transmitting the temperature?.In other words they are doing what they are suppose to do.The disease is not in the thermoreceptor nerves but somewhere else.
My body or skin very sensitivity to temperature like heat and cold intolerance like not tolerate in heat and shivering in normal water bath or when i wet in rain always shivering excessively very badly
Unbelievable how well you explain every aspect of biology. A fantastic resource for my A-level studies. Keep it up !
You made it possible in just 14 mins
What my two professors failed to do in 8 hours! Thanks sir!
Thanks for everything Dr. Campbell, you have helped me so much in studying for my classes and the MCAT
How much did you score?

Very clear explanation with the right visual diagrams and just right amount of medical terminology to aid understanding, thank you
Just great simplified explanation. Congrat!
smooth, short, easy and understandable, you are a GOAT
This is what we call TEACHING! Writing on the board and not just reciting the slides
i love your video on the ear structure n i must say you are amazing human being
What causes the nerve impulse in nociceptors (when you really zoom in)? Does their deformation/cut/membrane damage open sodium channels?

So free nerve endings are actually dendrites of the sensory neuron? Please correct me if I am wrong. Thank you.
so where are the meissners corpuscle located ? dermis and the merkel are located at the epidermis and dermis?
Thank you so much. Please keep uploading your videos they are very helpful.

Excellent lectures Dr. Campbell.
Thank you so much doctor
I would like to know whether those nerves mentioned like that for Itch, for tickle have special names
I was given assignment and am sure this is helping me out may God bless you
I think they are just called itch and tickle receptors, thats what I call them.

What are the nerve endings are they nuerons
I like the way he is explaining
Ruffini end organs????
Well done very clear, thank you 🌹
Thank you, you explained what i needed to know clearly.
the legend himself!
Any of these are connected to melanocytes?
thanks, it helped me to understand, you made it very clear.
Can we consider nociceptors as free nerve endings ?
Yes, they do not seem to have a specific receptor, the whole fibre is the receptor.
Dear Dr. Campbell, are sensory nerves (in the hand and fingers) able to regenerate?
You are great
Can u explain what are free nerve endings??
Can receptors of touching which are damaged in surgery can be reversed ?
Why so good!!
Doc, what could cause a crawling creeping sensation on the scalp? is this is all part of the nervous system? Thanks.
Skin sensations can be a neuroogical effect, what does your doctor think it is?

Dr. John Campbell can’t I’d be part of anxiety?

Thank you:) you made it so simple and easy
Hello dc
Can i ask you plz.??
Thank you sir you've helped me a lot cheers 😍
My professional tutor
Father of anatomy and physiology
nice video, keep uploading
Professor could you please explain whether goosebumps are somehow related with receptors or not ... If yes then what's the reason behind
No its not receptors, thy are used by contraction of the hair effector muscles, usually when cold.
Thank you
Thank you!

Thank you - I finally get it!
Interesting.. it had mentioned 1400 years ago in quran surah annisa chapter 56.
