Jessica is amazing as Joan. Some of you want her to play Joan like Dunaway did. But we are talking about totally different styles here. The Dunaway movie wanted to show Crawford as a psychopath, abusive and all that. So Faye did that, marvellously. But this series wants to show the more gentle side of her, when everything was falling apart around her. It's a more complex portrait of Crawford and Lange is wonderful in it.
I wish that Susan would give me more of that "broadyness" that Bette had her vooice inflections...hell me as a black gay man I've been told that I do a better Bette Davis that Susan...LOL!!!!
Me too. And I make people laugh with that impression. However this series is not a comedy, hence for my it makes sense that Susan doesn't use that voice.
The people criticizing Jessica's portrayal of Joan need to let go of the Faye Dunaway version and look at the interviews of Joan Crawford here on RUclips.
Apparently a lot of you have never watched Joan Crawford's movies from this period. Jessica does a fantastic job as Joan Crawford! She is much better as Joan than Susan Sarandon is as Bette Davis...and as far as Faye Dunaway goes....she gave one of the greatest campy performances of Joan Crawford the world has ever seen, but Jessica Lange is giving Joan a grounded honesty that hasn't been seen before. I can imagine that Joan wasn't always 100% over-the-top as played by Faye Dunaway.
i agree 100%, i think alot of people see joan as faye dunaway portrayed her, she didnt capture her vulnerability which jessica is doing beautifully much less of a caricature, but i still loved faye in that role it was riveting
Faye did a much more dramatic version that was her HOME life, but Jessica touches on what she was out in the open. Joan was fake and phony upfront and took her anger and bottled it up in such an unhealthy way that it affected her home life.
bryan emler oh come on now, Jessica is a respected actress but Susan Sarandon is doing a brilliant job, and Jessica is doing well but she slips in and out of character alot. Joan Crawford spoke very refined and didn't sound like Reba McCantire ! so let's not get ahead of ourselves here
1) No need to shit on one actress to praise the other (your Sarandon's remark); 2) Dunaway played a version of Joan that might be greatly exaggerated or not even true so no sense in comparing
This show is amazing. The cast is brilliant, all 4 main actresses (Lange, Sarandon, zeta-jones and Bates are academy award winners) are incredible and nailed it.
Listen to the sound of Jessica Lange's voice in this video. Then type in Katherine Helmond and listen to the sound of her voice in a You-Tube video of her. Both women have the SAME voice !
Jessica obviously doesn't share the same interest or claim kinship connection to Crawford as Faye Dunaway did. Well might as well dodge that claim look at what that did to Dunaway LFMAO.
After initial scepticism, I ended up loving it. Yes, they left a lot of things, stories and people out, it simply would have been impossible to include everything, but it made some very cogent points and it was done with great humor with many really funny characters to disguise exposition (like Mamacita). There were also many great quotable lines. Some of the actors were better than others and to an extent one had to take it all with a few grains of salt and just enjoy the performances and lines that WERE well-done. The best characterization of a known actress, in my opinion, was Sarah Paulson's, who totally nailed Geraldine Page and was absolutely charming, just like Geri. The only really bad one was, yes, I have to agree with the others on here, Zeta-Jones as Olivia. Peee-yooo!
I was one of the people to cheer Faye's portrayal of Joan, and was disappointed she wasn't asked to reprise that role! Jessica is a MARVELOUS actress, and extremely talented, but she just does not look like Joan, even with all that makeup and hair -- or sound like her -- she sounds like Jessica. I read a comment somewhere that just made me go "WOW! great idea!" -- That Judy Davis should have played Joan, not Hedda Hopper. She WOULD look like her and her voice octave/tone is closer to Joan's; Miscast. But Susan is perfect as Bette! I will give 'em that!
What a shame Eileen Davidson from real housewives of Beverly Hills was not cast as Joan , with makeup hair and facial control she could be Joan's twin! She could carried the acting off as well being a soap star for decades . Jessica is a great actress but can't get past the small eyes , Joan's were large and luminous a very important trademark missing
I have to say that Jessica is in another league of acting compared to Susan. She totally embodies her characters. I actually forgot that I was watching her when she was playing Joan. Whereas I just felt like I was watching Susan Sarandon act a bit like somebody else. She didn’t fit the role for me at all.
I guess because she is part of the cast and is an Oscar winner herself. Also her father in law is Kirk Douglas who knew the real women and men the cast portray.
Faye Dunaway’s performance was a grotesque caricature. It actually ruined her career later on bc directors and studios didn't want to hire her. I would say Jessica had the harder role to play cuz Bette Davis was another caricature role easier to flesh out.
You're right! Sarandon was good, but my eye always went to Jessica's portrayal of Crawford. There was always something in her performance that made me pay more attention to her than Sarandon's performance.
Susan Sarandon is amazing, and Jessica Lange is as well but Jessica doesn't pull off Joan very well with her accent. I see her going in and out of character alot
PRETTY LOWLIFE AND CRAPPY on catherine zeta-jones part to publicly state what her father in law thought of crawford! yeah, does ole catherine want to go there and have others publicly talk about her father in law and his allegations of wrong? Or her husband being treated for sex addiction?... shameful that she would diss crawford and it coming from someone who DID not know her that well like her father in law....
Jessica didn't get down Joan's voice or essence. Jessica's voice was too soft, languorous and Midwestern. It didn't have the learned elegance and energy of Joan's. Fail.
First of all Jessica Lange looks horrible trying to portray Joan Crawford. Not even close. And secondly, NO artist is unaware of the greats that came before them. She should hang her head in shame.
Well, Lange is a Ryan Murphy favorite - I believe that that is why she was automatically cast. But Ryan miscasts and then plasters make-up on people so that they look like puppets. Lange's make-up in the how is RIDICULOUS! (nothing like Crawford) And so was Travolta's as Robert Shapiro in the OJ Simpson mini-series. Both Lange and Travolta looked terrible (nothing like the person they were portraying) and were terribly miscast.
You can prefer it, but it wasn't accurate. Even Christina has said that Mommy Dearest didn't capture Joan right and the movie is based on the book she wrote based on her life. I think she'd know more than anyone. Faye did a great job, but it was a dramatization and only showed how she was at home and not outside of it. I think Jessica is showing the much more phony, righteous, outward persona she gave without trying to play it up. I don't think anyone else would be better for the role of Crawford except for perhaps Eva Green or Cate Blanchett had they been aged with make-up. Even then I still believe you'd be unhappy. Joan was a good actress, but Jessica is a GREAT actress. I know it's hard for you to take probably, as a fan . . . but a LARGE majority watch for Lange. Lange is the entire reason for the success of AHS and Joan has honestly been forgotten. Bette Davis on the other hand? Has been kept alive and is still massively idolized for her humor, personality, talent and fashion and is a huge icon partially living on still due to the Gay Drag community. The reason I bring this up isn't to down a dead woman, it's because . . . today? People only know Joan for Mommy Dearest, a movie about her that she herself wasn't in but a portrayal of her that wasn't even accurate. People quote from that movie and still a majority of people even in the gay community won't know what it's from unless it's about wire hangers. ---- Bette however? She as a character and Lange as an actress? Are the two major reasons this show is getting views.
Watch interviews of Joan Crawford and you will see that Lange captures her essence. Unfortunately, Faye Dunaway's over the top performance (which is pure deliciousness) is seared into everyone's mind as being representative of Joan's personality.
I disagree ... I suppose there are fleeting moments, but the voice and affectation is off (I don't recall Crawford talking in a proper British accent).
+Michael K Well then you're wrong. As a Brit, I can tell you that accent is not English and if you knew about that era you would know during the silver screen era thespians had classes to speak in between to get that cultured sound and also to make both from either side of the pond be able to relate somewhat more to the characters. It's called a TransAtlantic accent, it was legitimately a near HAVE TO and MUST ESPECIALLY for women until after the war during the silver screen ages of Romantics. You can watch many movies where you hear Bette Davis use a similar accent. It just happened to MOSTLY die out in screen, but still moderately happens when people travel back and forth from the US & UK. As a Brit, I get it when I am around Americans for too long or something similar.
Amazing performance by Jessica Lange...
Hats up!
That's not true. Dunaway's Crawford showed different sides of Joan, there were many scenes in the movie where she was vulnerable and tender with Tina.
I wish that Susan would give me more of that "broadyness" that Bette had her vooice inflections...hell me as a black gay man I've been told that I do a better Bette Davis that Susan...LOL!!!!
Me too. And I make people laugh with that impression. However this series is not a comedy, hence for my it makes sense that Susan doesn't use that voice.
very well said
+Messylin Even Christina said that Dunaway's portrayal wasn't accurate.
The people criticizing Jessica's portrayal of Joan need to let go of the Faye Dunaway version and look at the interviews of Joan Crawford here on RUclips.
blueberrycobbler, BINGO!
Jessica nailed it! Faye, not so much!!!
I'm a big fan of Jessica Lange. Wonderful actress.
What an extraordinary story of Zeta-Jones chatting with Kirk Douglas.
Apparently a lot of you have never watched Joan Crawford's movies from this period. Jessica does a fantastic job as Joan Crawford! +Miss Marvella You're thinking of Crawford as the actress and roles she played, not as a woman in her actual life.
bryan emler oh come on now, Jessica is a respected actress but Susan Sarandon is doing a brilliant job, and Jessica is doing well but she slips in and out of character alot. Joan Crawford spoke very refined and didn't sound like Reba McCantire ! so let's not get ahead of ourselves here

Susan & Jessica are BOTH wonderful as Bette & Joan!!
I love her hands act. Very characteristic
This series couldn't have been cast better. Everyone did an amazing job.
Although Jessica doesnt really look like Joan, she SOUNDS like her! She's doing a marvelous job with the role!
Jessica did an amazing job portraying Joan. She brought a very gentility to the role and did a better job than Dunaway.
Dunaway played a version of Joan that might be greatly exaggerated or not even true so no sense in comparing
She is so beautiful Jessica Lange is.
jessica has such power
This show is amazing. The cast is brilliant, all 4 main actresses (Lange, Sarandon, zeta-jones and Bates are academy award winners) are incredible and nailed it.
I am enjoying Feud immensely.
shes amazing.. a legend..
I know this is focused on Jessica but by God, Susan is fucking stunning.
I love this show.
Listen to the sound of Jessica Lange's voice in this video. Then type in Katherine Helmond and listen to the sound of her voice in a You-Tube video of her. Both women have the SAME voice !
My father is law Kirk is a hundred year younger than Olivia . Now that's a burn ! You go Cathy !
is this entire interview on demand on Sirius? I'd like to listen to it.
Omg, what a professional ladies!
Jessica Lange is unbelievable in this series.....W.O.W
well good thing Catherine made this video interesting
For me, Jessica Lange hasn't quite captured 'the essence' of Joan. Perhaps Sigourney Weaver would have been a better choice.
Far too old,and quite like a old lady playing Joan
I think Jessica has captured her perfectly. I BELIEVE you're comparing Jessica's Joan to Joan when she was acting and not when she was off set.
Jessica Lange is a beautiful woman and a lovely person but wrong for the character of Miss Crawford in my opinion.
I wonder if they ever asked Faye Dunaway if she'd be interested? lol
Comments like that belong inside your head. Show some class. It's a bad habit that will eventually turn.
WHERE CAN I WATCH IT ONLINE
FX channel on Sundays
and RUclips :)
Jessica obviously doesn't share the same interest or claim kinship connection to Crawford as Faye Dunaway did. Well might as well dodge that claim look at what that did to Dunaway LFMAO.
Look up : Stephanie Roth Haberle
I recently saw her on The Good Fight... you can guess who I think she could have easily played...
this show Feud was a letdown no one looks or sounds like who they are playing Catherine Zeta is abysmal as Olivia.
Twaddles McGee lol
Really? Nearly every comment all over the internet have given this rave reviews. Now CZJ as Olivia? We completely agree. She was horrible.
After initial scepticism, I ended up loving it. Yes, they left a lot of things, stories and people out, it simply would have been impossible to include everything, but it made some very cogent points and it was done with great humor with many really funny characters to disguise exposition (like Mamacita). Love Jessica Lange, but seems like she plays this emotional role on everything. Also seems like the focus is more on Joan vs Bette (?)
Wow #Chathrinezetajones is Looking super Fab !!! Werk it gurl !!!
I have to say that Jessica is in another league of acting compared to Susan. She totally embodies her characters. I actually forgot that I was watching her when she was playing Joan. Whereas I just felt like I was watching Susan Sarandon act a bit like somebody else. She didn’t fit the role for me at all.
Why is CZJ sitting in front?
I guess because she is part of the cast and is an Oscar winner herself. Also her father in law is Kirk Douglas who knew the real women and men the cast portray.
Pretty embarrassing that Zeta Jones has a father in law who reminisced and knew Olivia de Havilland when she manages to be NOTHING like her!
I agree with you and why would she repeat such a negative comment Kirk allegedly said about Joan.
that Joan Crawford, she was.>>lOL
my baby
Faye Dunaway’s performance was a grotesque caricature. It actually ruined her career later on bc directors and studios didn't want to hire her.
I would say Jessica had the harder role to play cuz Bette Davis was another caricature role easier to flesh out.
Lange STILL doesn't know the first thing about Joan.
the interview er
Jessica is acting circles around Susan in "Feud" and thats that on that
You're right! Sarandon was good, but my eye always went to Jessica's portrayal of Crawford. There was always something in her performance that made me pay more attention to her than Sarandon's performance.

kirk douglas. yuck. problematic history with women...
Jessica looks like bruce
Faye Dunaway was a better Joan Crawford!
Jessica is miscast in this role as Joan Crawford. Looks and sounds nothing like Joan.

Jeremy Silver Right!!!!
I thought she was absolutely heartbreaking and brilliant. To each his/her own, though.
I much preferred Faye Dunaway as Joan Crawford. Jessica Lange's impersonation of her seems so watered down.
Well, Lange is a Ryan Murphy favorite - I believe that that is why she was automatically cast. But Ryan miscasts and then plasters make-up on people so that they look like puppets.
