    I think the idea that playing in a traditional style is somehow limiting compared to what's considered "contemporary" is rather uninformed, to put it mildly. The more traditional styles commonly have more advanced chord progressions and demand more harmonic and melodic sophistication from the soloist than the typical Blues/Rock player. Most of these hot rod pentatonic cowboys couldn't play happy birthday in whole notes.
