Mortal Kombat 1 officially made the franchise the Fast n Furious of fighting games. No matter how mediocore games they release, no matter what shitty practices they do, people will always buy and shill for the games.
(conflicted on this comment because I find Fast and Furious entertaining, but I see it as live action anime at this point 😂) but yes, I agree.

I was arguing in some Tekken 8 Heihachi comments with a guy named Roy with a Shaolin Monks Reptile pfp who's been around for a while commenting on mk videos. Anyways, he was calling Heihachi's return stupid, and I agreed, but I told him that "at least it's not as bad as khaos reigns", and the dude LOST IT. He literally praised mk as if it's a gift from god, even though nrs feeds him and the other mk shills shit. People can be so ignorant nowadays it's crazy XD.

MK fans are impossible nowadays. Don't get me wrong, Street Fighter 6 has some problems and I have been fairly outspoken for not liking how they handled Heihachi just in terms of story (only because of how hard they tried to make me care with Tekken 7 so it felt like a slap to the face), but if you're gonna criticize Heihachi or the S2 of SF6 having two KOF characters then Khaos Reigns isn't even fair game, it's the Free Space on a Bingo card.
People nowadays are such simps for brands that they forgot that the definition of "brand" originally refers to the practice of branding animals. It's no longer about approaching your favorite games with how they can be improved in mind, you have to simp endlessly and support every tiny things the devs do otherwise you're a "hater".

Yeah I think heihachis return is stupid too ( no reason or need to tie it to the lore ) now we know there's never going to be any weight to the lore ever and none of of them are ever going to die, but it still doesn't compare at all to the complete nonsense the mk story has devolved in ever since the end of the first trilogy

The first comment missed the entire point. Like you said, most fights in non story mode are non canon. But in story modes for games like street fighter and tekken, they don't give chapters. It's on a fight by fight basis so Dan hibiki can fight a random guy and win, then fight Birdie where the player controls Birdie and beats Dan, then player plays bison and can fight/kill birdie
In mk, you can play a striker chapter and fight shao kahn, liu kang, noob and scorpion win all 4 fights in a row and after striker won't win a single fight again...

Dawg what other company was out here leading characters and story first the way MK was back in the day? They put out one of the coolest games with that atteact mode and arcade endings and when it came to at home consoles, Tobias was basically sending comic books along with anyone who wanted them for further investment in the story of these games. The amount of work that went into this world isnt even comprehended by NRS era fans man...
They have no idea why MK became the leader in the story telling department and they get upset any time people make these distinctions.

I don't know that we'll ever get anywhere w/ NRS games because the community doesn't seem to want a better product. Definitely a different attitude than the other community's have toward their games. It seems like Tekken/SF fans hold their devs feet to the fire but too many of the MK fans don't seem to care to hold NRS accountable for any poor creative choices they make.
I think it's because a lot of MK players have no clue what it takes to make a good fighting game. They honestly seem confused when people criticise it which has lead me to believe that.
It's also partially NRS's fault for acting childish & BLACKLISTING anyone who has legit criticism about the game.

NRS has no concept of continuity nor power level. Sindel's killing spree in 9, Cassie destroying Shinnok, Raiden actually being a jobber constantly "I must consult the Elder Gods". Timeline resetting over and over and over again. Its perfectly fine to like MK but anyone who says the story is GOOD has absolutely lost the plot and should expand their horizons. "MK isnt about story" then why tf do both of the last games make you PAY for a story expansion

Biggest problem of NRS Is having cool concept/stingers for their stories but never following them up completely or Just immediately fumbling them.
Dark Raiden? Dies in the First chapter of MK11
The new timeline? Was cool up until Shang Tsung showed up and the story turned into multiverse bullcrap
The Titan Havik cliffhanger? Boi Is nothing like oh Havik and gets bagged by fucking Noob Saibot of all things

The bad writing, lame designs, no booty on women, bugs, no proper balance and QoL features is all on NRS
What irks me the most is that pretty much every man in the roster looks like a million bucks, built pretty well and muscular. But the women are just average, for lack of a better word? @@RealMikeHollow It’s a fun Zelda game, playing as Zelda is actually enjoyable. She fights differently to Link and you have to use different Echos to combat enemies. If you’re a fan of the series, buy it. I highly recommend it.
These tweets are confusing and (indeed) baffling. I don’t want to criticize these people for their tastes, or lack thereof, ‘cause I’m just some rando in the net but what they’re saying in those tweets is way off the mark that I do not know whether their aim is there or not.
Nevertheless, this can be rectified purely on logic essentially. Put aside MK1 for a bit and think about this; The Top Dog, The Big Bad/Boss, The Head Mafia, Grandmaster, or other synonymous titles representing an individual’s title authority, DO YOU want to mess with them? There is bravery and then there is foolishness. These positions are not handed to just by anyone on a silver platter; they are earned and that means somethin’. That somethin’ could be of various factors such as reputation, gravitas and capabilities
Logically, you don’t want to mess those who’re at the top ‘cause for what they could do with that amount of power is terrifying in of itself. Plus, if the majority know what this individual is capable of, and the general reception has that same feel and perception about that person or entity, you ought to be more careful. Pre-Mk1 Sub Zero and Scorpion are grandmasters of their respective clans; that already tells you of their strength, authority, wisdom and power, also they have supernatural powers… what else is there to give you the reason to not mess with them. Unless you want a personal ass-kicking from them as proof then by all means. You have to see it to believe it, I suppose.
On the subject of Power-scaling, I think those people need to calm down and rethink ‘cause if an average human has the ability to time stop, anyone with a functioning subconscious can already tell that ability is op, even on an fictional setting. A buff vampire and a maid, both whom can time-stop and throw knives are proof of that. And frankly, that ability is not that complicated for what it could do. To how you are able to do said ability on the other hand that can be simple or complicated.
I’m actually surprised you didn’t mention Bruce Irvin when you talk about Tekken and how they handle power-scaling. As crazy and goofy, as you put it and I agree with that sentiment, Tekken is, a Muay Thai fighter, a normal human, being a bodyguard to a devil that can level entire cities and decimates armies. You would think Kazuya doesn’t need a bodyguard (although he kinda doesn’t considerin’ Bruce is nowhere to be seen) but he does and that makes you think, why did Kazuya need a bodyguard in the first place? To appear humane to the general public? Even so, Thai fighters are scary. Imagine what Bruce is capable of that qualified him to be Kaz’s bodyguard.
There’s Nina but she’s more of an Assassin than a Bodyguard. Same goes to Anna as well though I do not know if she’s still doing that.
God forbid we want things we enjoy to be good and give honest feedback hoping the companies behind them will listen to their fans. At this point these people deserve what's become of MK1.

The chapter system inherently limits Mortal Kombat’s story telling potential.
It’s always been this way. Even back in MK9 when the story mode was introduced seeing Johnny Cage beat Baraka, Reptile, Sonya and Kano all in the span of like an hour only to job for the rest of the game was severely disappointing.
Also on topic to speak of the power levels. The chapter system screws this up too. I can believe that Stryker in MK9 could potentially take on and beat Mileena, however, him then going on to beat Kintaro and Ermac because he has to due to the chapter is incredibly stupid.
All in all, MK needs to revamp its story mode structure to allow for a more dynamic and satisfying story experience. They should also allow villains to win more so they don’t look completely pathetic.

Mike, MK players have always been 11 years old's that begged their mommy to buy them the game. Hence why the game sells 10 million copies but has the smallest player base.
Mk1 didn't even sell much. In fact, it's tied with SF6 with both having 4 million copies sold.

The original Scorpion(Hanzo Hasashi) was japanese from a Japanese clan, rivals of the Lin Kuei. HOWEVER Scorpion being a total simp beta male named his clan after a girl he met. Scorpion used to be a total badass warrior leading his clan. Then he died and came back as an unholy vengfull wraith of destruction. I miss the old Scorpion. He's a weak man who looks to his wife to run his clan now. Only weak beta men won't or can't run there household. Rant over 👍
NRS storytelling is just abominable. In MK v. DC, the plot itself justified why the character you used in the story mode won all of their fights, with the whole power fluctuations that make the current character stronger than usual. It irks me that NRS has used this same chapter system in their story mode on 8 different occasions and don't care enough to improve their formula by doing more than the bare minimum.
I really did like the beginning but yeah that’s about it, this the sparking zero waiting room now, my last chance for this game is probably Ghostface because I’m curious on how he will play but yeah bo6 and sparking zero will be taking my attention after that

I think that subverting expectations on fight results is great specially if done correctly but that's the thing, NRS does it TERRIBLY. Let's say Cyrax beats Sub-Zero, if it's in a fair fight where she's just superior and beat a more experienced fighter it's lame and because this type of thing happens constantly on MK story mode it becomes unbearable, specially because it's ALWAYS with the character you're using so it's also very predictable. Other than that, if these odd results were sporadic and made in a smart way nobody would ever complain. Let's say that Cyrax has a new "tool" or weapon that Sektor or whoever have developed and Sub-Zero isn't aware off and she uses it to beat his ass while also taking advantage of her knowledge about his powers, that would be great. That's what happened in the first MK movie, Sub Zero was about to Kill Liu Kang but he used water against Sub-Zero in order to deafeat him, not only that but this advice was given by Kitana who appearently knew about Sub-Zeros capabilities. So yeah, if done corretly it can definetly enrich the story but NRS just does it for the sake of it.

These mk “fans” only think this way bc fighting game stories are often regarded as secondary to the gameplay and visuals. It’s ironic considering that they shill for a franchise renowned for bringing big, cinematic stories to the forefront but would backtrack when someone critiques the game.
I think I agree with you when you said that the Fortnite kids have taken over. Heck, I’m not even 18 yet, and I have a greater understanding of story and writing than these ingrates 💀
Lifelong MK fan, literally since the Sega Genesis days. Nothing has been a more cynical and lazy release than MK1. It's a half hearted mess, stitched together with mobile game modes, and featuring costumes and guest dlc characters clearly intended for MK11 but NRS / WB wanted you to buy an entirely new game. I used to blame WB for the trainwreck but NRS has shown they're quite literally checked out from caring, thus, so have I.
It's a shame, I used to love MK's world back in the 3D era. Spent countless hours in Konquest just finding things and exploring everything lmao. Now in NRS era, that mystique the old games had is completely gone. First with the shoehorned Special Forces and gritty realistic storytelling and design X and 11 had, and now just full on multiverse shenanigans. I truly miss old MK

Like literally, half NRS rosters since mk9 are jobbers who don't even get a chapter and lose every fight they're in, and instead of letting us play as the bad guys for once and just win a sole fight, their way of fixing it is that everyone's a good guy now and only like 4-5 characters are really villains in mk1 roster now
Personally, i think the "1 Chapter = 1 Character" is the reason why NRS story writing is horrible.
They wrote the story mode based on that principle alone. And that is the reason why the power scaling is inconsistent and super messed up.
In my opinion, hotaru should have been in the kombat pack. In any way, i don't think it would fix the story, but cmon order vs. chaos, miss opportunity

Man, as a lifelong Sub-Zero main, all of MK1 feels like a kick in the teeth to me, personally. Then, This crap comes out. They really made Scorp and Sub jobbers. The game is so off-putting to me. Mechanically, and Story-wise. It feels like they purposefully bastardized the entire franchise. I am ashamed of my Mortal Kombat tattoo, these days. It, like the franchise itself, went from being something bada$$ and cool, to a complete joke.

Does anyone remember how bad MkX story was? Cassie beat up powered up shinnok? I’m not surprised story has kinda sucked. The only good story was the original story.
I think this is a good dlc, that being said, kp1 should absolutely be base game. It comes with two important story characters and some not so great guests. There is even evidence to suggest Ermac was going to be base roster
From these tweets, people are legit being programmed, like robots, it’s getting scary in the world. The story was inconsistent, and Mike pointed out some inconsistencies and kinda woke stuff in there honestly, and this is coming from a true MK fan.
My first was UMK 3 on the sega genesis in 98, but KR was kinda a let down with inconsistencies. Fire cut scene action though.
"Stans" of anything are the literal worst. Definitely don't give them any time of day. They'll just waste your time and energy.
Edited for funsies: On the topic of power-scaling, I think it really breaks my heart to see people act like it isn't a tool for making stories better. I like Batman and dislike Harley Quinn. And in the canon, Harley should not beat Batman. However, establishing that power scale only to then come up with a GOOD JUSTIFICATION for Harley to defeat (temporarily) Batman is actually a good thing, even in my opinion. Sure, we all know she ain't killing him and even in a fight she wins she isn't just wiping the floor with him but a well placed stab to the gut with a sedative coated knife and viola, Harley has managed to overpower a character stronger than her.
As if we don't like seeing weaker characters defeat strong ones. I hate most people because most people have a narrative and do not want to engage with others in good faith. And at that point I think it is better to just say nothing. If I don't like a person, it is better for me to just move on with my day and go do something else. They ain't changing my mind and I'm not changing theirs so who gives a ****.
MK's Story peaked at 9 if you ask me. X had the great blueprint of doing a new generation admist it's flaws then Mk11 and 1 happened and well........ yeah lmao.
your honestly right about the demographic for mk being lower i was probably 12 years old when i got mk11 and now im 17 looking at my premium edition copy of mk 1 realizing my mom wasted her hard earned money on a game im not gonna play for a long time.they took away the variety in customization in every mortal combat game,focused on pandering to the yes men who basically worship the game for some special treatment from of company who cant seem to get the memo and they game every female character a botched plastic surgery and turned my Egyptian queen(i cant believe i just said that) into a diversity shield but for some reason every dude looks average.while tekkens story is goofy i can at least somewhat see why Heihachi is back since Kazuya survived being thrown of a cliff,hit point blank by a orbital laser and survived being thrown in a volcano(at least from what i know) yet i don,t see how some random girl in a mech suit with no story to show us that she can at beat someone who probably has decades maybe ever a century's worth of training other than poor writing.now that i'm thinking about their choices for the dlc's are just as bad 1.the mechanized gender swaps since we already had sektor and cyrax in the bade roster already 2.ghost face if it was mkx or mk11 i could understand a bit but mk1 has air combo which would make ghost face look more goofy and out of place 3. the t-100 or whatever hes called since we already had a terminator or a character from that franchise in the last mk game 4.the konal the barbarian since most people who are playing mk(which isn't alot) aren't 18+, heck even i don't know who this guy is until he was announced and the fact that most people would only get the dlc for noob saibot is such a bad look heck tekken is probably better at making dlc's(but maybe not cause i only bought lidia). I'm not really playing fighting game alot now cause i got stick drift on my controller but im gonna play alot of terry and maybe get Heihachi when I got the money but i would never pay 50 dollars for a story expansion and one single character that has been in every single mortal kombat game ever since he was made.I hope they try with the next mortal kombat cause i really want doom slayer to be playable in good mk.
Im not a 4th snake when it comes to MK lore but MK had the most interesting story, the most indimidating foes, the darkest atmosphere. Although MK did had the blood and gore, it was never about that for me. It was the characters, the stakes, the interesting moves, the realms, the meanicing enemies and horror like aesthetic.
story mode could've been fine or decently good, if it had a decent ending.
like in base story mode, many shit on the ending of that cause of the multiverse, but at least it was epic, we had armageddon with character fusions, whacky sure, but at least it was a climax and ur not left unsatisfied so you still can enjoy the good parts of it like reptile and baraka, khaos reigns though, starts fine it was fine maybe also a bit good, it was fun to see the khaos timeline, but then ends terribly, no climax, and havik dies by losing his limbs, despite in the previous scene, not at the start of the story mode where you could say, ok it was at the start it's fine, literally the scene before he showed us that losing limbs for him is basically a paparcut, he regenerates quickly, and if anything it just makes him stronger by getting more clones, and it was also so anticlimatic, we don't even see if he's dead, or imprisoned or anything, nood saibot just gets frozen, and then that's it.
there's a very avoidable death, it happens often in all fiction, but usually they're not this avoidable, of a character that was actually kinda interesting too for what we've seen of him, and then we get orin but they literally forget her, no one goes back to save her or mentions her.
and I just remembered like an hour ago, but what the hell happened to the fusion characters? the quan zero and kitanya we saw at the end of the main story, they were with havik, for real, what happened to them?? they seemed very important, but they were nowhere to be found in khaos reigns, and people forgot them too, like am I crazy??

an issue I've had with khaos reigns is that it was too standard, theres no more qte's like in mkx and the first mk1 story mode. when players play the story mode its usually only for the story.
but for some, its also an opportunity to tweak with the gameplay. just 2-3 qte's would've made the story mode more interactive and fun. this is why tekken 8 was such a blast despite having an overall worse story than mk1. it had alot of twists in the gameplay that made you more hooked. same with the first mk1 story mode with test your might and the final character select. i hope the tekken 8 expansion will also have these.

They did something like this in Naruto Ultimate Ninja games. When you fight Itachi with Sasuke in the story mode his health was tripled, and he did more damage. They basically said told you to survive for a set amount of time. And in the instant where you go full offensive and actually manage to delete his hp before the timer they tell you you failed the objective and cannot continue the storyline.
They actually managed to do it im suprised... How do you make a Fire God Liu Kang character with all the knowledge of the past timelines, get to finally have the power to create a potential brand new universe, and make that character look incompetent and clueless. No new ideas after 30 years. Re introducing characters every 10 years (MK9 is over a decade old) but just re arranging them.
They've written themselves into a corner and I don't think they know how to get out of it.
I watched Super finish khaos reign,this man is basically the biggest mk content creator. Now, I dont want to call him out or anything but he said that he was happy with the story, its just that he does not understand what happened to havik. He also said he was happy with bi han in the story......I sat in disbelieve but I realised something. There are people out there who just consumes and puts no standard of quality to anything.......or he just shills but i dont wanna turn into FATE lol. I guess we just have to accept that there are people out there who will just love whatever NRS presents to them no matter HOW bad it is.

It shouldn't have been bundles imo. If you separate all of these things then you might be able to justify a price tag but $50 is excessive when you won't be using most of the stuff in there and the story is 2 hours maximum. If I could get Noob for $8 then it would have been fine but they force you to buy it all.

As a non native english speaker (I'm from Argentina) I'd like to add the fact that in MK1 you can't select the voice language (it's your console language) neither select the subtitles language (a feature that 99% of videogames have in 2024).
I Always watch movies & play videogames in their native language (japaneses, english, french, etc.) because its more inmersive and 'cause I hate dubbing.
With how pathetic Mk1 story is, maybe it's a blessing, but as a fan of MK over the last thirty years it's so stupid I can't watch the story with english voices but spanish subtitles.. Oh yeah, I forgot NRS is an indie dev.

This expansion was something we had to pay for separately from the base game so saying nobody plays it for the story makes no sense. There's lots of Toxic positivity on NRS/MK1, it fair to critique it and want to see improvements but when ppl go to Xtreme cause u are voicing your opinion then it just as bad as toxic negative, I'm 45 and I'm not happy with the new direction but I still love the characters and the memories it brought me since original arcade
None of the devs play their game except some QA (former local "pro" players) and 1 designer (hardcore- also a former pro player beat Sonic at '15 combo breaker).

The story is worth watching on youtube instead of paying full price to see it. They gender bent Sector and Cyrax which is something no fans have asked for. Writers feel like they could just switch genders and concord established characters at this point and the audience deserves no explanation. It feels like a huge missed opportunity to not have Takada be the main protagonist and have him be the main part in the Shiri Ryu subplot. The writing in this new MK game just feels like "Killing bad, Letting people live good." when it's MORTAL KOMBAT, (The game known for it's fatalities). Scorpion feels like a b*tch now. I miss when he was about vengeance and would just kill people not giving a fuck cause he was a spirit for vengeance. Bi Han was cartoonishly evil and made the dumbest decisions that wouldn't make sense for anyone to do. He is supposed to a grandmaster and the writers couldn't write him to be more intelligent/perceptive or have the decision making higher than an angry toddler. Johnny Cage wasn't funny and would just say shit as if it were a bad MCU movie. He literally had a line in the script that was "We're fighting math now?!?". - oscar level writing right there.- Tbh I feel glad I just watched it on youtube instead of paying full price for the story
i had a cartoon as a kid about the first MK game, it was actually pretty good considering it was made for children - i dont think there were any fatalities in it, but that didnt matter to me as a kid because i got to see my two favorite ninjas and their rivalry unfold in a cartoon and it was ofcourse full of bad punchlines and jokes like when sonya touched sub zeros shoulder and he freezes her arm, Johnny cage (i think it was cage..) quips that he gave her the "cold shoulder". Dude saying story never mattered in MK need to lay down the crack pipe, srsly... story and worldbuilding is the main attraction to casual fans, its basically what created the fanbase and the fanbase is literally the reason we HAVE like what? 13 MK games?...
