  • War Of The Worlds 1953 Vs 2005 Remake References & Comparison is a video by pupbenny taking a look at the original 1953 War Of The Worlds film by George Pal and comparing it to the Steven Spielberg 2005 War Of The Worlds Movie starring Tom Cruise as Ray Ferrier and specifically, in this video, looking at the references the 2005 War of the Worlds remake made to the original 1953 film, The War Of The Worlds, starring Gene Barry and Ann Robinson as Dr. Clayton Forrester and Sylvia van Buren.War Of The Worlds Explained Playlist: www.youtube.co.... Wells The War Of The Worlds is a story by British author Herbert George Wells in which alien visitors from Mars arrive in space capsules first in Horsell Common near Woking in Surrey. This is at first thought to be a meteorite by the English men that discover this cylinder with the astronomer Ogilvy exclaiming that the chances of anything coming from Mars are a million to one. However, as the Narrator explains, Martian creatures soon make themselves present before using a Heat Ray to disintegrate some of the English people. They soon begin using massive Tripod Fighting Machines and using weapons such as the heat-ray as well as the black smoke begin to lay waste to the British army, leaving people such as the Artilleryman and the protagonist separated from everyone including his wife, and with the defeat of the ironclad torpedo ram HMS Thunder Child the Royal Navy as well succeeding in defeating the biggest Empire in human history, The British Empire at the height of it's power in the Victorian age in which H G Wells wrote the novel. The Martians very quickly establish a dominion over man as they spread their Red Weed across the Earth reaching the capital city of Britain London the Fighting-Machines cause great devastation. Other methods of transport the martian invaders use include the Handling-Machines as well as the Flying-Machines.On paper there have been many illustrated editions of the story, the first of which were done by Warwick Goble in the original serial version. Relatively soon after, Alvim Correa drew his illustrations. Henrique Alvim Corrêa was a Brazilian artist who traveled to London in 1902 to present H. G. Wells with drawings that he'd done for the story of The War Of The Worlds and there have since been many been many illustration versions by artists such has Edward Gorey and Lou Cameron. There have also been audio adaptations of HG Wells War Of The Worlds, including the infamous 1938 Orson Welles War of the Worlds radio broadcast and the iconic 1978 album Jeff Wayne's Musical Version Of The War Of The Worlds. There were likewise many attempts to bring the story to the big screen as well, including by icons such as Alfred Hitchcock and Ray Harryhausen, but it wasn't until The War Of The Worlds 1953 film by George Pal that this was finally accomplished. Later on, there's been Steven Spielberg's 2005 War Of The Worlds starring Tom Cruise and The Great Martian War 1913-1917 documentary style drama set in World War 1. Recently, the BBC made a TV miniseries the BBC British TV series war of the worlds and FOX, Epic and StudioCanal did a TV series starting in 2019 called War Of The Worlds that claims to be adapted from the source material. There has also been several war of the worlds movies recently as well, including 2021 War Of The Worlds, also known as Alien Conquest, which had a sequel called War Of The Worlds Annihilation and this year in 2023 War Of The Worlds The Attack. There have also been many indie games and art with a survival horror war of the worlds 2005 game which will be a multiplayer survival game based on the Tom Cruise War Of The Worlds movie as well as a faithful adaptation of HGWells War Of The World game set in the Victorian era by GelatoDev and TeamGreen with Team Green also making their survival game a multiplayer war of the worlds game as well and there's another announced in 2023 called The War of the Worlds: Siberia. There's also The War Of The Worlds 1913 game which is a worthwhile, fun and nicely stylised adaption of H G Wells The War Of The Worlds.

    It's pretty fantastic that the 2005 film mimicked and made so many direct homages to the original version. By doing this, it shows how the 1953 film it was remaking is an utterly iconic classic and further cemented the original's impact on defining what a War Of The Worlds film is.

      Is it me or does that movie not feel like a Spielberg movie? I keep forgetting Spielberg directed it. I know he was doing Schindler's List or was he doing that during lost world? Honestly I don't remember either way this movie does not feel like a Spielberg movie. And that's not a Good or bad thing. It's just something I noticed.

    3:54 a interesting fact: paramount nearly remade the 1953 war of the worlds in 1986, with george.a.romero, the director of the "living dead trilogy" and "creepshow", slated to direct. it ended up becoming the 1988 tv series.

    • @pupbenny
      @pupbenny  5 месяцев назад +5

      That certainly would've been interesting. Don't know if it's a coincidence, but watching the 1988 series, I can see his influence with the gory horror themes of it lol. Just watched episode 4 and the imagery of it felt very much like a night of the living dead situation. In fact my title for my review of the episode, whenever I do it, is going to be something along those lines I think. The thumbnail, which I've already made, definitely is!

    Ever since I re-watched this during my current TWOTW phase, I came to the conclusion this film is far more based on the 1950's movie than the actual book. This video further cements that idea lol. Thanks for the new upload king X3

    The design of the 2005 probe looks to be inspired by the heatray from the 1953 film, also I noticed this in the 05 movie that the main "eye" of the tripod has 3 smaller lights inside of it, kind of like how the 1953 alien has 3 different colored eyes

    I don't think the 2005 version is a remake or reboot but a sequel. First, there's the fact that was mentioned at the beginning of this vid about Barry and Robinson. And just think, with all that Martian "junk" left over, where did they dispose of such things back in the 1950s? The used to dump everything in New Jersey. So the Martians develop teleportation, beam back into their abandoned equipment, and start all over again.

    A comment on the 1953 film's power outage I'd like your commentary on. While I am am aware of the EMP effect which takes out the power after a nuclear blast, was it not shown that the Martian Heat ray had actually destroyed some high-tention power poles when they (Clayton Forester, the Sheriff and the town's police officer) arrived after the square dance. Thus, while radio communications, likely AM (amplitude modulation)based, are down and the phones effected by the magnitism...was it not the downing of the power polls which had the bigger effect?

    • @pupbenny
      @pupbenny  5 месяцев назад +1

      Ah yes, that's a very good point! I would agree, it was likely the power polls that were the primary reason for this.

    As much as I like both of the films, and having read the book a few times, I would say that Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of the War Of The Worlds, particularly the original with Richard Burton narrating, is still the closest in atmosphere and detail, to the original H G Wells novel. The BBC serialisation tried, but failed, to get it right, having set it in the right era.

    What I never understood why in the 1953 film when foresters truck and the school bus full of scientists and was hijacked and robbed it was allowed to happen. Surely if these scientists and their equipment are vital to figuring out a way to beat the Martians and the General himself said that, surely then they would be escorted out by military escort rather than just left to the mercy of a mob? Also seemed a bit of a odd scene to me.

The happy family (and family dog) storyline, the annoyingly über-masculine divorcee, the squealing child, the annoying teen, the boring dialogue, and the sacrificing of suspense in favor of spectacle made the 2005 movie a bore (except for the spectacle moments).

    It was clearly a love letter to the Pal movie, much more so than the novel, this is still the worst movie that Spielberg has ever made. It looked great. But the script was phoned in, the acting was utter crap, the "update" of story to 2005 was mindless. When you are so great for so long, you forget that your farts still stink, and this was the final sign that Spielberg is ready to retire.

    We need a film version of the actual book, with lots of nods to the Jeff Wayne musical music. The 1953 film was Americanized tripe and nothing like the book.
