- If you've watched the movie "Lincoln", then you might be familiar with the opening scene that depicts a vicious Civil War battle being fought in the mud and rain. The battle shown in that opening scene was from the Battle of Jenkins' Ferry, which was fought in Arkansas during the Red River Campaign in 1864. In this episode, we're traveling to central Arkansas to explore this battlefield that is often overlooked in the history of the Civil War. In the follow up, we'll be pulling out our metal detectors and joining @digginonfaith531 to unearth some rare artifacts from the fighting that took place there.

Is this land privately owned or state owned ? Battlefield trust if contacted would probably be interested in the purchase of this land. Its rare to see an undeveloped civil war battlefield anymore. This would be right up there alley. You can e-mail them Battlefield trust. I believe they are headquartered in Washington D.C.. They save battlefields all over the country no matter what size.

My Great Great Grandad Nathan Williams was in the 1st Kansas colored at age 19. Meanwhile his father Gaston was an Army Engineer building Baileys dam on the Red River. Thank you once again for visiting these sites JD! It’s a blessing that you are telling their story!

This was amazing. You can find old civil war battle sites like this all over the South, mainly skirmish sites, if you put in the time to find them. It takes having to talk to the right people at times but we’ll worth the effort. I’ve researched sites similar to these throughout the state of Tennessee and sites like the one in this video are the very best to find. The “exploring” part you mentioned, that’s the funnest part because many of the skirmish sites go forgotten about by most after so many years. I hate that the old “Cannonball House” burned. You did a great job with this with the overhead footage and all, very well done.

Man, I'm glad you're back. I love the way you present these battlefields. Never cared about them when u was younger. As an ex-military person, I have a new appreciation for the history. I live very close to Kennesaw Mountain. I love hiking there and checking out the trench lines. Beautiful example of defense in depth I've ever seen.

Im a WW2 girl myself but since that topic has felt a bit to close for comfort, ill dip my toes into the civil war lol
I also want to point out that others may be experiencing similar, having a hard time viewing war content when the holocaust is literally happening again for another group of people... it hurts to see, it was easier to take in these facts when it felt a million miles away.
This is the only reason in my mind that your channel would have taken a dip on views. You guys have amazing content, a genuinely wonderful host and fantastic editing and music choices, I'd hate for y'all to think we couldn't see that.

Great video, as always. I’d love to get down there to see that site someday. Another place you should visit is in Pleasanton, KS: the Mine Creek Battlefield, just across the border from Missouri. It’s the location of the only uniformed battle of the Civil War in Kansas, and was one of the largest cavalry battles of the war. About 2,500 Union men took on 7,000 Confederate in a mounted battle that amazingly resulted in a Union rout, mainly because of superior weaponry. Confederate General Marmaduke who fought at Jenkins Creek was captured at Mine Creek by a Union private who he mistook for one of his own men, and leading one of the cavalry units on the Union side was none other than Colonel Frederick Benteen who later rode with Custer’s forces into the Battle of the Little Big Horn. Really interesting Battlefield site.
Thank you for providing this information. Yes, I was about to point out the Battle of Mine Creek and the Battle of Carthage, Missouri as well. If my memory serves me correctly, the Battle of Mine Creek was the largest cavalry engagement of the Civil War west of the Mississippi River. High School and university text books across the country rarely even mention these battles.

@@TheHistoryUnderground Another great site to visit in Kansas is the Black Jack Battlefield, a little east of Baldwin City, not far from Lawrence. This pitched battle between the forces of John Brown and a pro-slavery militia led by Henry Clay Pate (who was also a participant in the earlier sacking of Lawrence) is sometimes referred to as the first real battle of the Civil War. It was a three hour battle, finally won by John Brown’s forces. Pate later said, “I went to take Old Brown, but Old Brown took me.” There’s a J.E.B. Stuart connection, too. Interesting place.
Shortly after moving back home to Arkansas and after nearly 30 years of living out of state, my wife and I traveled down to see the battlefield and park at Jenkins Ferry. At the time though, the Saline River had flooded and overtaken it all. Thank you for reminding us to return and try again. :)
BTW, The Armory where the Union troupes mustered for that campaign stands as a museum at MacArthur Park in Little Rock. Memorabilia from the Civil War, both world wars, the Japanese internment camps in Arkansas, and Gen. Wesley Clarke. We were there on a day that saw a military vehicle show, an unexpected surprise.

@@TheHistoryUnderground Gen. MacArthur is not generally regarded as an Arkansan but he was born in that building when it was a post hospital.
Thanking you for bringing attention to the overlooked Civil War in southwest Arkansas. Roy L. Wilson came down to the Mansfield battlefield a few years ago to talk about the Battle of Jenkins Ferry. A lot of the battlefield at Mansfield has also been lost. This time to itginte mining.

My friend and I went to a lot of Civil Wars battles sites never got to this one. When I was in the National Guard, I drove the bus to Wilsons Creek in Missouri after being there once already. With a chuck wagon meals, which was excellent and very delicious. A time I really enjoyed and cherished, even received a old timers knife for a award. I miss visiting these places I haven't gone to. With the price of every thing going up and health issues seems it's not going to happen. Thank you for this video, at least it will get me some acknowledgement of what happened there.

I lived in South Carolina (Hilton head island) for a number of years, and there were tons of civil war sites I would go and visit while living there. Old forts mainly, battle fields and such. I’ve always been crazy about history. I love your videos !

Learning about the lesser battles of the civil expands my understanding beyond the one dimension of the major battles that are usually focused on in documentaries and taught in my youth. Great video great research and great commentary. Thanks.

As a history buff, Civil War reenactor and living historian, I have been to many major battlefields but the smaller ones are where I like to be for studying those events that occurred during that time. What a perfectly timed video. My son and D-I-L just moved to North of Little Rock...I guess i know where im gonna go explore when i go to see them. Super fascinating experience to see where these battles take place...I would love to be able to Metal Detect, for historical preservaton, at these places...This area looked so torn up, I hope it is perserved for a very long time....

Glad you enjoyed it! I've given some thought to things like the D-Day and Gettysburg series. I may need to scale back my ambitions in the future just to keep from burning people out. Maybe 15-20 episodes instead of these monsters that I've been creating.
@@TheHistoryUnderground Well... Yes. 15-20 ep. would be a good amount. Your videos about these events are really well made but the burn factor is a danger. The interest from the viewers (me included) is high and the stories/artifacts/interviews are top notch! The difficult thing would be to choose the right ones to make I guess. The Ukrainian stuff is amazing and is sort of close for me here in Sweden.
I would absolutely love if it would be possible to make Vietnam and/or Korean war stories as well or maybe a more cost effective route would be WW2 Norway/Denmark/Finland stuff? Just wishing away here.. ;)

Great job! Exploring battlefields that are not preserved in a state or national park is both trying and very rewarding. I have walked every mile of the old roads and trails of the Louisiana portion of the 1864 Red River Campaign over the years and I conduct tours as well. The key engagements were Mansfield and Pleasant Hill, April 8 & 9, 1864 but also important was the Battle of Monette's Ferry on April 23.

Very well done sir. I recall from my history class in high school that some Union Generals came up to Chatham Ontario Canada where there was a large population of former black slaves who came to Canada on the underground railroad for freedom, and tried to get them to insist with the Union Army to fight the Confederates. They didn't get very many conscripts.

Loved what you did in Ukraine but happy to see you back to regular content. You mention nothing of the battlefield had been preserved which I agree with. Particularly around the creek it would appear that NOTHING is preserved around there. Holy habitat destruction batman!! Lol

Great video, as usual! The savagery between the Second Kansas Colored and the artillery battery at Jenkins' Ferry was, in part, sparked by the battle at Poison Spring a week earlier. At that earlier engagement, some Confederates reportedly killed wounded soldiers of the First Kansas Colored Infantry. Some reports of the Jenkins' Ferry fight state that Second Kansas troops yelled "Poison Spring" as they overran the Confederate position and killed some wounded Confederate soldiers in retribution.
Yeah. I need to go back down and do something on Poison Springs at some point.

Awsome video I have driving past this battle field alot and you go to the park its hard to imagine the battle field as it was that day since most of its on private land...but you have shown what ive always wanted to see..... more of it than just at the state park.... but you can go there and almost feel the presence the soldiers there for the most part its like it was the day of the battle down there....Awesome video
