Well, he _is_ one of the most overpowered characters ever created.
Not even mentioning his Havoc in Heaven, he has so many different powers that even he has trouble keeping track of them all.
I remember reading somewhere that the Pilgrims in Journey to the West were all meant to be allegories or analogues for components of the human condition.
The Monkey Awakened to the Void, in my opinion at least, represents both our childish pride and our outright refusal to die.
Everyone said that protecting the Monk was meant to be his penance, but in the process, he learned empathy and self control.
From where I'm sitting, they just made him stronger.
