Oh my gosh paisano! You picked the right one... those pizzas looked like heaven on earth. Going out to eat pie right now Thanks for the wonderful review ❤❤
Thanks, as always, for a great review! While I've never been to West Haven, a buddy I grew up with in Queens moved to New Haven after college, so I spent a fair amount of time up there, and enjoyed plenty of pizza offerings. Now, I'm thinking of catching the train up to West Haven for the day, or even overnight just to check out out! That clam pie sounds excellent!
As a West Haven resident, I can attest to the deliciousness of Zuppardis. I love the selection of pies...my favorite is a red pie with greens and tomato.
Hi James, Thanks for your review of Zuppardi’s Pizza 🍕. I must say that this goes on my bucket list! You give us so much variety of food to enjoy! Have a relaxing evening, Peter
Okay, it's no surprise that I will now always respect your critique on food. Your appetite & passion for food demands my respect & reverence!!!!! This was a great review. I appreciate you setting the stage with your travel from NYC and seeing the shore and the sights in West Haven. It's also refreshing to watch a detailed review of the crust and toppings as opposed to simply getting a score!

Thanks James for this pizza review . As a pizza lover myself, you've given me incentive to take Metro North to West Haven, CT sooner than later to eat at Zuppardi's. I'll be trying out Lou and Ernie's Pizza in The Bronx this Thursday. So far, overall, i'm a #1 fan of the Nonna Maria pie at Bleecker Street Pizza in the city. Keep up your labor of love.
@@Jamesnu Hi James. I visited Lou and Ernie's today. The eggplant pie was just ok, nothing special. My friend had a pepperoni slice which she enjoyed. Overall, i don't think it's worth your while trying this pizza venue. I'm sure you've had better pizza elsewhere. Just giving a head's up. On a scale of 1-10, i'd rate it a 7. Hi James. Zuppardi's pizzas looked delicious ! I remember seeing a food program on Australian TV early 2000's, a young German chef in a 5-star European hotel, and he took us through the whole process of making a pizza, trained in Italy, etc. When the pizza came out of the oven - he had gloves on - he slid the pizza off the tray, and balanced it on his hand ! Zuppardi’s was my first in restaurant apizza. The classic pie with the sausage and mushroom was AMAZING. I don’t get cravings for Pepe or Sally’s, but THAT, I get cravings for!
Absolutely loved this video. I enjoyed how you started off at the food area at Grand Central. For years I really look forward to getting a soft pretzel there. That sausage pizza looks incredible. Hi James, what a great review of Zuppardi’s those two pies looked delicious! Your definitely can put away some food, simply amazing James don’t know you do it . But thank you for sharing this great experience I truly enjoyed and look forward to your vlogs ! Jose P.
I’ve always thought clam pizza sounded amazing but my one chance to try it here in Florida was a big disappointment, guess I need to try it in West Haven. Thanks for sharing your experience.
2 twelve inchers, with toppings, not bad! I also reviewed their clam pie with the mozzarella. I'm not sure it's designed to be prepared that way but I liked it, despite attributing to more flop. Definitely the best clam pie I've ever had. If sausage toppings are your favorite, I would recommend Louie & Ernie's, they're located in the Bronx. And if you ever visit the New Haven area again, I recommend checking out Lighthouse Point Park, it's along the beach and there's a nice lighthouse there.
Both pizzas looked excellent, made me wish I was on the East Coast! Thinking that was a perfect pairing with a white sauce and a red sauce, besides clams and sausage is nothing short of perfection, imho😉. James, why waste your time reading a book if it’s torture, so many great ones and so little time, lol. Enjoyed the review, thank you!👍🍕🧄❤
"Apizza" .. wow.. as you may be aware, that's slang. Old-school Italian slang, that is. (Apologies if I missed the fact you mentioned this in the video) It's pretty wild that so many of the pizza establishments in W. Haven (and surrounding area) use that in their business name, written right on the storefront 😊
I live in New Haven I'm actually impressed your walk from the train station to the zuppardi's Pizza to the beach it's a long walk. pizzas 7.9. I actually like my New York slice
Those pizzas looked delicious especially the clam pizza with the lemon and toppings …being a little tacky I would have had a glass of chilled white and red wine for each pizza 🍕🍷
Excellent review! We have a couple old pizza houses in Milwaukee which are excellent but homemade sausage wins the day. Fresh clam pie....too much garlic but looks good. I vaguely recall another institution in CT which is Riley's Gourmet Dogs. Deep fried dogs. All on my list on places to try when I get to the east.
I have not yet seen clam pizza. It looks totally delicious. I checked out my local pizza parlors and no clam pizza. It looked like an overall great day for you, beautiful beach on Long Island Sound and great pizza.
I have lived in New York since 1973 but have been slowly moving to New Haven, where my wife attended college, since 2018. Have been to P, S, the Wooster Street places, M on State Street--but for some time my favorite has been Zuppardi's, not even in New Haven but in East Haven. First off, Pepe's may claim to have invented the clam pie, but theirs does not even come close to what is served here and seems like a VERY garlicky piece of charred crust with a somewhat fishy topping. Zuppardi's is a wonderful balance between crust, spice, and lovely fragrant freshly shucked, briny clams with some lemon on top. I think I remember a vlog where the owner of Lucali in Brooklyn was taken incognito here, they ordered a couple of pies, but did I just imagine him passing on the second pie and order another clam pie instead? Also I believe he has shown respect by not reproducing this pie; people from small family businesses should not try to poach on each other's turf. Frankly for the most part I think New Haven pizza is a cult thing about the char; Sally's cultivates the heaviest char, Frank Pepe's their original pedigree, Modern actually understands a Margherita better than the other two--but that's Neapolitan, not NH. I'm not entirely happy about your video because Zuppardi's has been less well known, when busy it can be hard to park on the street or their tiny lot, but I've never seen lines of people winding down the block. It has been ignored by tourists. I almost get the feeling that on Wooster Street the famous stores think people assume our pizza is the best, even if they've never eaten it before, so--I think a lot of times a pie is just made, by whomever, however, because it's going to pass whatever. I really get the feeling at Zuppardi's they stay on the ball and make sure it's right. With a lot of local regulars around, complaints will not stay unnoticed.
Thank you for such a great comment. Yeah, I saw the same video with Mark Iacono, the owner of Lucali. I believe he did get a second clam pie, which makes sense to me. Zuppardi's clam pizza is something very special.
Not easy to do when you're traveling by train but come to New Haven on a Thursday and Uber to New England Brewing Company on the Woodbridge/New Haven town line. Zupp's truck is at the brewery on Thursdays so you can have that delicious Zupp's apizza and really good beer. I'm what the locals refer to as a "duck hunter" due to my love of the IPA Fuzzy Baby Ducks at NEBCO but they offer all types of beer from IPAs to coffee stouts. They go really great with a Zupp's pie. :)
Zuppardi’s is my favorite spot out of the New Haven apizza titans. The freshly shucked clams set them apart from the rest and they’re usually less busy which makes them more accessible.
Yeah, two 12" pizzas for lunch is not normal! :D No implied criticism, I once did two tasting menus in one day thanks to not realising that the lunch restaurant didn't have a lunch menu on Saturdays!
Most people who aren't from the Northeast US probably can't even comprehend a "clam pie", but if they could just try it once, they'd be hooked. I used to be able to get a great one in my area, but the original owner sold the shop and the new owners discontinued the clam pie. I miss that pizza, might be time for a road trip...
Good stuff. Quick question - Which of the pies would you go with from the pizza places you have visited if A) you could only have one slice B) you had to eat the entire pie. It's a question we were asking ourselves the last time we went up to CT for pizza. Some of the pizzas at Sally's or Pepe's or Zuppardi's seemed like favorites if you "only" ate a slice or two, while others seemed to be the favorite if that was the only pizza you were going to eat all night or for the rest of your life.
I see where you're coming from. For me, I could easily eat a sausage pizza like the one I had in this video all the time, but the clam pie I could be satisfied with only a couple of slices.
Hi James. A pizza review and a book review, nice. IMO Zuppardi’s has a better chew to it than Pepe’s . Their clams are better quality. Pepe’s is a little thinner and has the better char. It’s a preference really. It’s just not my style. Give me a prototypical NY slice any day over New Haven. Thanks for sharing. 👋🏽
Not gonna lie you had one hell of a day after such a meal you got some sun on the beach and got to swim, and read your boring ass book, and got some cardio getting back to the train with the heavy book bag and pizza bag in the belly. Nice
Its funny how you posted this video and i was looking up pizza places in new haven as i am going to new haven this weekend. I was looking up reviews on pizza places in New Haven the past few days in order to find the best pizza place to visit. Great Timing as i always watch your food reviews.
You can't go wrong with visiting Modern, Pepe's or Sally's in New Haven or Zuppardi's in West Haven. On a weekend, Modern may have the shortest lines. Enjoy!!!
James I am not sure if you have watched UGLY DELICIOUS on Netflix (from Chef David Chang), but they have a pizza episode and visit New Haven during it. I like that you differentiated between the toppings and the dough & crust at Pepe's. The pizza oven can definitely make a huge difference. I can understand slogging through a book like the D.H. Lawrence one you described. I hated the Catcher in the Rye because it seemed like one big rant. I will stop watching videos from travel youtubers who only use their platform to complain about their destination.
Your ability to dash to the train station with two pizzas floating in your stomach is impressive!

Zuppardi’s is my favorite spot out of the New Haven apizza titans. The freshly shucked clams set them apart from the rest and they’re usually less busy which makes them more accessible.
It's a great spot indeed!
A prefect pizza...you a a blessed man
Thanks for watching!
Love your videos man! I have to say though I am very loyal to the Chicago style tavern pizza. Does this beat ours in everyway?
Thank you! I love a classic Chicago style tavern pizza too, but I definitely think New Haven style is better.
Yeah, two 12" pizzas for lunch is not normal! :D No implied criticism, I once did two tasting menus in one day thanks to not realising that the lunch restaurant didn't have a lunch menu on Saturdays!
Haha! I strive to be different! I wouldn't mind having two tasting menus in a day.
Thank you! ❤
Thanks for watching!
I know what you mean. People are missing out.
Very enlightening James..I can’t find white clam pizza in the Uk
Thank you! It's pretty rare pizza even in NYC.
Thanks for watching! Yeah, I definitely think Zuppardi's is superior when it comes to their clam pizza even though I do like the char on Pepe's pies.
They have awesome frozen pizzas available in supermarkets in CT too
Nice! I saw their frozen pizza selection on my way out. It looked pretty good and the prices were great!
Love your tshirt
Thank you!
Very nice Hamilton
Thank you!
Wow - that looked really good! (I actually prefer thicker pizza).
It was excellent!
Perfect order @ Zupes!
Thanks! I was pretty happy with it.
Smart move taking the train, traffic on 95 in CT is absolutely horrendous!!
Yeah, it was a relaxing train ride.
Those pizzas look like a solid 8!
They were solid pizzas!
I really like the Pepe's clam pie, thought Modern's plain was better than Pepe's, will have to try out Zuppardi's clam pie next time I'm in CT.
It's definitely worth a try!
Not gonna lie you had one hell of a day after such a meal you got some sun on the beach and got to swim, and read your boring ass book, and got some cardio getting back to the train with the heavy book bag and pizza bag in the belly. Nice
Haha! Yeah, it was a great day overall.
Its funny how you posted this video and i was looking up pizza places in new haven as i am going to new haven this weekend. I was looking up reviews on pizza places in New Haven the past few days in order to find the best pizza place to visit. Great Timing as i always watch your food reviews.
Awesome! I hope that you have a great time there!
@@Jamesnu Thank you!
Yep, I've seen the show. The pizza episode might've been my favorite. Haha! Yeah, I'm not the biggest fan of complainers too.
Love your videos. Wish you can check out California and eat some street tacos lol
Thank you! I love California! I hope to get back there to do some eating soon.
I live close by there and they have the best sausage pie ever
Nice!
Ah D H Lawrence……hope you enjoyed the book!
Ha, turns out you hated it!
Haha! I've read worse.
That’s sausage pizza looked tasty.
It was so good!
Always love your reviews. I'd like to see you try Pequod's Pizza, if only to see if you're able to gain weight.
Haha! Thank you! Pequod''s is one of my favorites! Maybe the next time I'm in Chicago I'll make a video there.
Did the restaurant not sell beverages? Amazing pizza BTW. DH Lawrence complaining about the Italians?
D. H. Lawrence seemed to complain about everything. Yeah, they did sell a variety of beverages, but I just stuck with water.
James! Do you have a Strava people can follow?
No, I've never used it.
My family spot growing up
Nice!
Don't waste your time, go to Wooster Street....
