Not a fan of Raven, but she is right. We are Americans and our ethnicity is dubious because we have so many different ethnicities running through our DNA. We are uniquely American, not African.
If you go to the Websters Dictionary of 1828 it says “AMER’ICAN, noun A native of America; originally applied to the aboriginals, or copper-colored races, found here by the Europeans; but now applied to descendants of Europeans born in America.” So Raven isn’t wrong in saying she’s American. Now given Ravens skin color before the collective term “Black” there was another word called TAW’NY, which from the same dictionary means, adjective Of a yellowish dark color, like things tanned, or persons who are sun-burnt; as a tawny Moor or Spaniard.

Truth be told, they are all descriptions used by slaveowners to classify your blackness, ie; - "Black"= Straight off the boat African. -"Negro"= At least 75% Black and 25% European or Native American. -"Colored"= Mulatto, Mutt, Mixed, usually the result of a Black Slave Mother and a White Slave Owner Father. After Slavery, however, these classifications tended to fall into ambiguity because we were no longer on the plantation, and over time were used to determine Social Status amongst Blacks.
I'm old enough to remember! Jessie Jackson may have popularized the phrase "African American" in 1975 but the terminology "Black American" and "African American" started coming into usage around the mid to late 1960's. Deciding what you identify as is nice for personal power. Somehow it does not soften the impact of those that could care less what YOU want to identify with. Very easy for Simone to ignore the multiple reasons she has to defend her perspective and identity to begin with. But the effect of having to deal with it as an issue is obvious and blatant in her response.
To be called a "Misnomer..." such as "African Americans " when our "Nationality " is "American Indian " in reality... is what makes African American 👈🏾 a "racist term " & the truth is we are Aboriginal to the Americas not Africa at all. There's always more but I'll digress. ⚡
The fact of the matter is, Africans were here in the Americas 1000s of years before Columbus, we had already sailed here as merchants, we're not ethnic/indigenous Turtle Islanders {that was the name before America} #2} The name American Indian came from Columbus, he was sailing for India and got lost, he ended up in what's called the Americas and referred to the Natives as Indians!! Man, do some critical research!!
@@CommonSenseGUY79 I know....☝🏾you think you've got this all "Figured out..." yet from your reaction... I can tell that you haven't done any "Genealogy " of which would make common sense... to do 1st... to anyone with 👉🏾 intelligence. Any one can regurgitate... about "Columbus... right GUY? Btw "India " isn't a Spanish word its French. Now... Marinate 👈🏾🤪
@@andermancan942 I notice you didn't prove me wrong!🤔What you said, is not Common Sense, it doesn't even make sense!🤷🏽♂You can't disprove what I said so you make 💩up!🤦🏽♂There NO such thing as an "American Indian" {what the hell does that mean} before the Europeans this Country was known as Turtle Island {google that genius} If you were indigenous, you should know that, Mark Twain once said, "it's easier to lie to someone than it is to convince them that they have been lied too" from brother to brother do better!!
@@andermancan942 Another black guy claiming to be the "true" native said don't believe genealogy.. its all lies. So are you saying geneology tests will prove African Americans are actually native americans.
@@andermancan942 You are from Africa
Oprah seamed offended that Raven wouldn't play her race game.
I missed this man who dared to speak the truth.
I am An African who by no choice of my own happen to be a citizen of America. It's funny Irish can be Irish American, Every year in my home state Italian Americans celebrate their Italian heritage. There's Latin American. See we always feel like we need White folks' approval, that's this young ladies real issue. Not one Black person descendant of slavery is an American. We are born into exile, denied justice and repatriation. Our collective Identity is well known, just stolen and given to others. This reality are even erased from our consciousness intentionally because they refuse to return us and grant us overdue justice. Now for those who sold their soul this is radical.
Exactly! Every other race can proudly display their heritage with no questions asked but when we try to do it, we get the folks trying to debate us about it. Before y’all tell us what YOU prefer we go by, go to Boston on St. Patrick’s day next year and tell those Italian Americans that they should stop using Italian American and just say American. See how long you last before getting punched in the mouth.
werent africans offered repatriation back to Africa?
Actually it is your choice... you are FREE to leave at any time.
Were you transported on a slave boat to America? That's what you sound like. The argument is bc the term was meant to be divisive. Why dont whites call themselves European Americans? This current white generation are also here without their choice. Now u see how ignorant you sound?
@dingdangdong-t1q exactly and the Western crime syndicate will still owe us for their crimes. Sadly only after the soon collapse will they pay.
Homer said egyptians were Black
He was a "Realist" RIP
George Carlin and Raven Samone are both spot on. Oprah being Oprah, showed her true "color" with her response. Just saying.
In an ideal world yes .....
BUT THIS IS NOT AN NEVER WILL BE AN IDEAL WORLD !
im black and i will always be treated as such ....
I remimded of it everytime i walk into a store ...
If i commit or suspected of a crime IM BLACK !!
DOESNT REALLY MATTER WHAT COUNTRY I WAS BORN IN
its the same story in all 4 corners.
@HebrewsUK keep teaching📚 in the name☯️ of TMH🌅🌌 💯🎯
If I'm not mistaken, Elon musk was born an raised in South Africa Cape Town, so I don't consider him being African-American.
why?
Pure genius.
These are conventions not definitions.
Funny but alllllllll true
I served in the Marine Corps with a Light Green guy from South Africa. He would always joke about being an African American. Miss you KattBalls!
Elon Musk is our best and brightest African American.
Raven is right..
Most Americans, black or white , could not even point to Africa on a map !
Mr Carlin is funny. However, for those who don't know... The current citizens of "Egypt" are for a large part, not the same lineage as the original citizens of "Kemet". Those people were blacc Africans for the most part; especially during the golden ages before final conquest and colonization
George Carlin is one of our National Treasures!
Color was not a thing until the 1600’s?
1700's.
@traeucity6087…. I thought it was the 1600’? Thank you!
