I'm new to wood turning and have not yet tried to sell anything, but although it is late I am going to try to complete the tree I started yesterday. Ironically (or not) my son is working with me too. I really appreciate your videos, and the playful disagreements in the videos with father & son. I actually began to comment for the sole purpose of thanking _dad_ for his teaching style, explaining what he's doing and vocalizing important points that aren't easily identified through sight alone. His instruction on using lighter pressure on the distances further out from the chuck is such an important detail 👏
Gotta say I'm with your Dad on this, if it's " worth the effort " then make it the best you can make it, have you guys used Yorkshire grit or Hampshire sheen finishing products, I think you'd like them. My dad too was a turner, I took it up 7 years after he passed, so it's nice to see you guys work together Take care Rob
Awesome job, men. You guys are truly inspirational. I've been woodworking for 30 years as a hobby, and after watching you for 2 months, I purchased my first Jet 1221. Thanks!
I love to hear both sides of the school of thought on the marketability, and the artistic idealism. I struggle with this, I don’t think I have made one item that I could make any money on at this point. Thanks for sharing.
Watching this video was absolutely heart warming and educational at the same time. It reminds me of me and my father working and not working together. Cherish these moments you have with him. The content was great. Being a new turner and all it’s something that looks somewhat simple to learn and I’ll learn tool techniques at the same time. Shawn, you are simply at the top of the game with these videos, thanks so much for putting them out there!
I love seing you and your dad working together. Just goes to show, that people sharing the same passion, can have different views on what is the best approach. Make up your own mind as to what you think is right. :) I agree with your father, and I agree with you - depends on the audience. Some farmers market would not appreciate an art piece, so it would be fine to just thrash out a bunch of cheap trees. A gallery, on the other hand, would be able to sell a quality item at a much higher price point, and they would require a higher attention to detail.
I enjoyed the “bickering” bit! Thank you guys for the information and being willing to share. I will be retiring soon from 30+ years in Education. I’d love to turn my hobby into projects that will help me fund my hobby! …. And maybe supplement my retirement a little! 😃
Now…now…Shawn…listen to your Dad, you guys are great!!!! Regards to your Dad and thank you both for sharing your knowledge on youtube Yiannis (Athens Greece)
@@wortheffort since I am just getting started on my wood lathe I currently follow the KISS rule (keep it simple stupid). :) I will work into the (over)refined products for the true keepsake projects. ;) You have become a treasure find for my lathe learning. Thank you and Happy Holidays!
You two guys are a hoot. A lot of fun to watch you. Thank you for all of the great tips whether it be for the artsy style of individual pieces or the mass production for a craft show, you guys are appreciated for your videos.
Wow, you two could never deny being father and son! If you just hear the audio it's really difficult to tell your voices apart! Love these trees! BTW enjoyed the craft vs art banter too lol.
I actually had this idea already then this video showed up and I was hell yeah I'll watch it see what you did with them and the back and forth with dad was great made me chuckle
Father dear, I think like you, but you sure have some great skills. I need to watch you more.Such a pleasure to see your craftsmanship.Hope to meet you some day.
I just found your channel a few months ago. Love your passion and how detailed you (and your dad) get. Any plans for continuing the teaching series? As an intermediate woodworker, I've learned a lot from the ones you've done so far. Great job!
I like the way you guys mess with each other its funny. What state do live in.You mentioned getting mesquite from your yard. I enjoy your channel. Jim's wood shop.
Hello resemblance, dang! Good content, thanks for sharing. I turned something very similar a few weeks ago as some turning practice, that went with 2 snowmen with hats, and ended up being a gift for my neighbors :-D
Thanks for your funny, nice, interesting video. By the way I would ask you the following: if you want to turn an epoxy resin wood bowl, what's the maximum % of humidity of the wood in order to avoid cracks or other problems? Thanks and best regards from Slovenia!
They are UV protection sleeves available on Amazon. At my age my skin is very thin and easily scratched and brused. These help but are quite hot in the summer and collect shavings.
Jack Graham Thank you! I was able to find them on Amazon and they’ve been very helpful. Most of the woods cause an allergic reaction on my arms and these have helped.
I would really appreciate a little technical detail on your Dad's home made tool for creating tenons! I'd like the make one also. Thanks for the great instruction!
@@wortheffort Thanks! That's what I've been doing, but there is just something satisfying about using a tool that you made to make a craft (or piece of art). :)
This is just a piece of 3/8 inch square tool steel rod I got from a tool supplier. Then ground down the end sort of like a skew and made a handle for it. The angle matches the angle on my Oneway dovetail jaws.
Sorry for the dumb question, but what tail stock is your dad using? I've seen a bunch of videos where people have a tail stock that looks like a machine screw. 5:40
Those are beautiful trees! Love the tips and techniques for turning these. This is the first time I've seen anyone create a cross on the top. I'll definitely be giving this a try.

I'm sure Dad's tried the stuff. I stick to basics.
The greatest compliment I can give you and your dad is that you are definitely” a chip off the ole block.” Best wishes to both of you. 🌴

Another awesome video. I am so jealous of the relationship you have with your dad and for him to teach you the craft! You are a lucky guy!
My favorite channel on RUclips..still think you all could have a tv show! Love these trees!

Awesome that you and pops share the same passion. PS: Christmas trees. :)

Love these videos. I just bought a lathe and I'm learning a lot about this craft/art 😉. I love the cross on the trees, I'm going to give it a crack!
Thanks, and have fun making a mess.
Your dad's a good instructor too. Nice to see you together. Thanks for sharing.
Arguing isn't working together. :)
really enjoyed the bi-furcated perspective art/craft. Good expansion and clear information. Thanks
Thanks
Those trees are brilliant in their simplicity.
Good earners too.
Your dad is so hilarious! Love his attitude - see where you got a lot of your personality from!

Your Dad does very nice work. I like him.
and not me?
wortheffort you do nice work too! 😉
Neat project! Was glad when he turned the speed up and it quit strobing so much. Also y'all are pretty comical. Takes all kinds to make a world!
This video reminds my of when as a kid I would follow my dad and grandfather around. Awesome!
Thanks
You guys need your own TV show! Nice tag teaming.
I really enjoyed how you and your Dad had good commentary interplay back and forth, it was a fun touch.
He really is argumentative. Thanks
Hi! Thanks for all your videos 🙏🏻 !!!! You inspired me and now you are following in France 🇫🇷 yeaaaaaah!!!!
Thanks
that is some nice work, they look great
Watched all 33:57 and enjoyed every minute. Great work, guys.

0:55 "i've even had some customers say they use them in their bathroom".😏
Hahaha that's what I was saying too!! 😂
Nobody talks about using your belly as a tool stabilizer, but it really can be an asset. :-)
Todd Fox now there's a good argument for taking up woodturning. Easier to find an honest use for the spare tyre than to lose it.
The back and forth between you and your dad is great. Made me laugh while I was learning. lol
He's a smart-arse.
Am not!
Aaah, watching you and your dad yell at each other makes me laugh and miss my dad, in a good way. Thanks for the feeling!
He's wrong.
Now you are questioning my decisions?
Made a few for Christmas presents this year for family members from cedar that came off their land
Always good when they knew the tree.
I enjoyed this video very much. Thanks to both of you!
Thanks
Loved the video thanks for sharing your knowledge. Look forward to the next one.
Thanks
Wonderful. Your Dad Is always right.😂
Beautiful work !
I find these very helpful thank you
I really love that lathe you have. I guess it is an older machine. I don’t recognize the brand. Super quiet.☺️
Dads main lathe is a Robust, mine is an older Jet.
Great video..love the trees and love the videos with both you and your dad...

I'm sure they liked em.
Love the channel. I’m saving for my first lathe.
You'll get addicted.
happy christmas to you both.
I don’t know jack about turning. Would you be able to cut a big chunk of wood at a angle and get two or more diagonal pieces. And then turn more?
Thanks for your funny, nice, interesting video. By the way I would ask you the following: if you want to turn an epoxy resin wood bowl, what's the maximum % of humidity of the wood in order to avoid cracks or other problems?

Christmas Tree, Christmas Tree, Christmas Tree, Christmas Tree.
no firs in Jerusalem.
You guys are great👍
If you make any money selling these you and your dad could do a comedy tour. Great video
Mate, your dad's awesome, great vid.
Ya ya ya, he's great....
Oh my gosh, you two tear me up.🤣🤣🤣
The trees are beautiful.
Thanks

You two should do a PBS woodworking show. I still think Shawn should teach this stuff. A natural born teacher.
Ya, and get treated like Tommy Mac? Too ugly, fat and slurry for TV.
Great presentation...by both of you. Can you provide information on the disc pad Dad used?
just a hook and loop.
They are CHRISTMAS trees! Had to get that out. Love the video and your channel.
Actually they're pagan trees.... tomatoe tom"ah"toe
What I find funny is the guy that makes 45 minute videos is saying to go fast! LOL
Tell him like it is pop 👍👏
loved it! thanks for the levity and Happy New Year! oh BTW Dad's always right - he gets righter the older we get :)
