Praise to the Lord | Grande Prairie Singers

James Healey Willan (1880-1968) who described his background as “English by birth; Canadian by adoption, Irish by extraction and Scotch by absorption” began his musical training at the age of eight in the English seaside town of Eastbourne, later moving to London as an organist and choirmaster.
Willan emigrated to Canada in 1913 for a position at the University of Toronto; a move that launched his steady rise in Canadian music circles. In 1955, more than 2,000 attended a concert in honor of his 75th birthday.
Called “the dean of Canadian composers,” Willan was named a Companion of the Order of Canada in 1967, the highest level of the Order, and is presented to those who have exhibited the highest degree of merit to Canada and on the national or international scene.
