I remember watching Chuck V bowling on Bob Fouracre's WSMW Ch 27,earlier /mid 1970s. One of the tallest bowlers you'll see. Amazing Tom gets a 20 box in the final frame to get q 402 triple

Dang this was filmed over 30 years ago. Why has this game not gotten way more popular since then?

Candlepin Bowling lost popularity overall as a result of WHDH's decision to get rid of this show in 1996.
Key reason why Candlepin Bowling didn't gain popularity outside New England, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia was poor marketing.
In fact, the Candlepin Bowling with Don Gillis shows were not live on television with an exception of the Tournament of Champions.
They were taped on Tuesday mornings and aired on Saturdays, which is why most of the audience were seniors as opposed to children and young adults.
Qualifying for this show was not easy as you have to get the highest score each week to challenge the champion.
Proceeds from the entry fees to qualify for the Candlepin Bowling with Don Gillis show were used to finance the prize and bonus money.

Tommy says it's very hard to get on the show. Sure it was, but he always made it seem VERY easy.

According to the "Worcester Telegram" article entitled "20 years after loss of TV show, candlepin bowling goes online to reach younger generations", qualifying for the "Candlepin Bowling with Don Gillis" show was very difficult.
In fact, Bowlers have to pay a high entry fee and Bowl five strings in an attempt to qualify. Top Bowler for that week earns a right to challenge the defending champion.
Proceeds from these entry fees were used to cover the cost of broadcasting the show, and pay the basic prize money of $700 for the winner and $300 for the loser, winner or string bonus money, three consecutive marks bonus money.
What you might not know is the "Candlepin Bowling with Don Gillis" matches were not aired live.
These shows are actually taped on Tuesday mornings for the Saturday broadcast, which explained why a majority of the spectators were seniors.
Using a wrong target audience and not airing the matches live hurt Candlepin Bowling in the end.

I'm wondering if Don Gillis is wearing a Nova Scotia tartan tie.
Since my home town is Halifax, I noticed that the tartan is similar to Nova Scotia's.
