    Thank you for your videos. They are very informative and encouraging. I am a BK amputee and have been for almost 1 year. You certainly have a lot of knowledge about the hardware we use and I really appreciate you sharing it.

    The reason is related to the science of thermodynamics. A looser liner won't facilitate heat transfer the way a tight liner will. The heat generated by our limbs will be absorbed by the coolest area surrounding it.The less open space the more efficient heat transfer becomes. HVAC engineer when I lived in Georgia and as such had to become intimately involved with Thermodynamics. Hope this helps.

    the tighteness of the liner causes a vasoconstruction which allow les blood in the sudoral glands , perhaps that's why. i am loving your videoes

    Nice presentation. I've been 45 years on AK prosthesis and I can vouch for the gel liners. Before they were invented every day was bloody and painful. Only mistake I caught was your saying that 6mm is the maximum thickness. I've worn an Ohio Willow Wood ALC 5096E for years that is 9MM.

    • @kikocat24
      @kikocat24 9 лет назад

      +Butch Carter It's mid October 2015 and I had an AK amputation in May of this year... I have tried a LOT of gel liners and the Willowood is FANTASTIC! It has the pin in front with a solid connection to my femur stump socket. As long as you keep the gel clean, they stay stuck to your leg!... I'm looking forward to my prosthetist moving me up from the "pinto" range of prosthetic leg to the Mercedes "C" leg by ottobock!

    I'm not an amputee, I'm doing research in designing an adjustable socket but, from the engineering perspective, I think it has to be with heat transfer. If the liner is very tight then heat, is transferred out to the socket walls. If it is loose, then heat is trapped inside and then it condenses and becomes water. I'm not sure, but I think that is the reason!

    • @Paxtraxx
      @Paxtraxx 7 лет назад +1

      Samuel Terrazas I'm a below th knee "amp", the water does not condense, a more compliant (tight) liner makes the covered residual limb transfer the heat to the air better than a loose one that will act as if it's an insulation layer which traps heat and then the body creates the swear to promote cooling.

  • @joujou1963
    @joujou1963 11 лет назад

    Excellent presentation. I love it and learned a lot. I'm 1 year into my below the knee left leg amputation. I too have a ICEROSS liner (no waves) thanks to an excellent amputee consultant. I never paid attention to the name or the quality. Thanks for answering this for me.
    For sweat I dab Povidone Iodine solution after bathing. And sprinkle pure 100% ZINC powder in the liner both after bathing and every couple of days. It mops up sweat and growth of any microbes thus no smell whatsoever.

    If the liner hugs your skin tighter the sweat glands tend to close up I have been an amputee for 13 years and have used many different kinds of liners for about 9 years

    About the sweaty liner issue, it might be caused by the air in between your loose liner and your leg. That air can warm up a lot more. It's the same with clothes, tight clothes are not favorable in cold weather, whereas puffy loose clothes are. This is because they trap more air, that your body can heat up. I don't know if this is the same for liners, but it seems kind of logical to me.

  • @TheDeltaMoo
    @TheDeltaMoo 11 лет назад

    Pretty much that. The air actually works as an insulator preventing heat getting off of the surface of the material. Also, as you said, air keeps the energy in it really well. With tight clothes the heat goes right into the denser and colder material and from that the energy goes to the colder air around it which then rises higher making more room for cold air. Through the cycle the first material stays cooler than with hot air trapped surrounding it not being able to transfer enough energy

    Most antiperspirants work by blocking the pores of the sweat glands, preventing the sweat from leaving. The resulting back pressure prevents further sweat production (osmotic pressure is limited).
    Similarly, your tight fitting liner traps the sweat in the pores, creates backpressure, and so reduces the amount of sweat produced.

  • @MishaVargas
    @MishaVargas 11 лет назад +1

    Christina, I love this heat question. I tend to believe the "trap'd air" hypothesis, and tend not to believe the "mechanical counter pressure" hypothesis.
    Air is a poor thermal conductor, and assuming that it's poorer than the liner (which itself is probably not great), it should slow the conductance of heat from your nub.
    I guess. I don't know. Maybe. Could there be a difference in the materials themselves as well, in terms of thickness or conductivity? Can these gels be made more conductive?

  • @Eusebeia7

    I am a 65 year old with a traumatic AKA for 16 years. I have never had to remove sweat accumulation from my liners even in Florida however my stump does appear to sweat more when there is an air leak from a hole in the bottom of the liner.

  • @octosoar
    @octosoar 10 лет назад

    The answer to your question is pressure, because there is less space for air to be trapped so there is less space to store sweat and the sensors in your skin for sweat work on the heat of air in the liner so the difference between the two is one is looser (more air space) and one is tighter (less air space

    I wonder if it has to do with the body knowing its contact surface, for example moisture increases friction so if its slipping around, the residual limb knows to sweat to increase friction and therefore stability

      Now I'm new and need any advice I can get. Bilateral above the knee amputee. All my scabs are not healed yet. I was told to go from the floor into my wheelchair, then I would be ready to walk again. I got from the floor into the bed, but that was easy. I got on my belly and pulled myself across the matress. But the wheelchair is different. We are going to start with stubbies so atleast I won't break a hip, trying to walk... I'll just be like a baby learning to walk, if I fall I can catch myself. I'm going in the next couple weeks so I can get my right stump cast. I think that's what he said.. I'm in the rehabilitation center since leaving the hospital. I feel so much better and I get around real good. I don't like this covid, but we get tested. I had it or they said I was positive for covid. They put me in a private room but I had no symptoms at all. I got moved to a suite so I enjoyed that huge smart tv.. They gave me all kinds of pills until I threw those things up.. But that was the worse part. Someone said I was a carrier that's why I didn't get sick. My linner is a " Willow Wood"

    I can vouch for how limiting crutches are. I had to use them once after having foot surgery. No weight at all for a week & a half. Just getting around w/o trying to carry something is difficult & carrying something w/o a handle is pretty much impossible. I can see why people chose a prosthetic. Once it's on there's more freedom to get around.

  • @rainbowcrayon37
    @rainbowcrayon37 11 лет назад +2

    Using crutches instead of a prosthetic is severely limiting long-term. You can't hold anything while you're walking and you can't safely do things like bend down or run or play sports. Not to mention the repetitive stress on your shoulder muscles could be damaging long term.

It's like the way I use to judge doctors old ones know the ins and outs and the young ones tend to know the new and up and coming. Neither is right or wrong and experience is subjective and circumstantial for all.
