Standing in a blind spot for the operator by a drop off he is digging on, I would place my self differently. Stripping coal overburden and keeping costs down to make electricity cheap, no money to hose it down or replace body panels on any of the equipment. Everything there has that "Hard Worked and put away wet" patina.

I struggle to find how removing so much overburden to get down to coal can be profitable. The cost to remove it then the cost to dig out the coal can’t be that far off the price of coal when sold surly
On a coal mine I worked at they said that each dump truck had 50k of coal on it.. much bigger trucks then this though. In Australia.
I pay my own electric bill. I can see how they're making money,
Look up german bucket wheel excavator if you want to see THE largest overburden machine ever built at 15,000 tons. It can remove 200,000+ cu/yd per day. In this video look at that ocean of black behind this shovel. That layer might be 500 ft deep or more. There is plenty of cash in the ground there

The beast in the background is a bucket wheel excavator, the biggest earth moving machine on the planet. But the RH 170 is one of the smaller ones in the Terex lineup, the RH 400 being the biggest weighing in at 900 metric tons

Where are the cylinders to open the "jaw" of the bucket? watched the whole thing and didnt see them.
They are consealed in the back plate of the bucket
it seems so overbuilt for the hydraulic pushers and hoses on there. Maybe its just boxed steel for engineering reasons not so much strong like bull.
Probably more designed for moving rock instead of dirt. So, for this application, it probably is overbuilt.

why waste weight for oversized cylinders? Just means less it can carry per bucket load (22 cubic m) Operating hydraulic is almost 5K-Psi (330 bar)

I would say 5-10 max. The RH170 is now called 6040 and manufactured by CAT at the same factory in Germany where they started build them as O&K some decades ago

That is a very old piece of equipment and doesn't look like they take very good care of her either. Slow operator also.
