Excellent second part on Manchester airport. By the way I think the all inclusive package tours was because up until the late 1960’s there were foreign exchange controls and a limit on the amount of cash per day you could take out of the country (£15 or £20 per day away). So it benefitted you to prepay for all meals and accommodation up front and it freed up what you could use the cash for (having paid for meals etc).
Another crash that happened at Manchester Airport, which almost everybody has forgotten about was this one. British European Airways Flight 411 Crashed over Wythenshaw with No survivors.
My Granny lived in Mobberley. I remember the signs everywhere saying "NO second runway" - there was a feeling that the village was going to be cut in two.
I spent a lot of time on the viewing terraces when I was a schoolboy up to 1983. At one time the viewing area was shut down and the "regulars" decamped to the end of the runway at the end of Shadowmoss Road. Someone even pinned a banner saying "give us back our terraces" to the airport fence which the police came and removed, declaring it a hazard for aircraft engines (possibly a fair point!) . Thanks for the memories, all the best
Very impressive how passenger air traffic built up since the end of the second world war. I did hear at one time that when it wasn't possible to land at Ringway, maybe through weather conditions, in an emergency the odd plane was deflected to land at Woodford. Anyhow, Ollie, a great job done of this video, thank you.
When I was about 10, Dad took the family out for 'a run' 15:12 to see the airport one Sunday afternoon back in the day. I remember the chandlers, I think it was the first 'art' I'd seen.
I grew up in Heald Green. I flew from Ringway to London for my job in 1962, it was the very first time that I had flown.Later, back in Cheshire ( as it was then) I met my husband and did a lot of our courting in the airport because the cafe was always open.I do remember being amazed by the chandeliers.
back in the 80's anyone could access terminal 1 just for a coffee or something to eat! so my mates and I would "call in" after a night out in Wilmslow (Valley lodge hotel!).
The airport is huge now. When I came back from Budapest in April, I had to walk from one end of the terminal to the other to reach the customs gate. It felt like a long tunnel, with the exits appearing like a mirage in the distance, forever moving further away. It took me probably 20mins to walk the length of that corridor, because they said conveyors are too prone to breaking down, and an insurance nightmare. You would think they would simply run a road train service on the tarmac, so passengers are taken back to somewhere a bit nearer.
As a licensed A&P I whole heartily approve of the fine aviation video. What.... Wait....... Did you sneak in a clip from the 1980 movie Airplane at 5:48 When I fly, I dread going anywhere close to LAX --- terrible airport. Dubi ???? That has to be the most hypocritical city, alot of kinky stuff goes on there. Thanks to Ollie for helping to keep local and regional history alive.............
There was an aircrash that predates the ones you mentioned. There was one in 1957 when an aircraft on approach and vered off to the tight crashing into houses on part of the Wythenshawe Estate.Of the people that died on the aircraft two died on the ground, a mother and young child.
I remember my primary school taking us on a visit in the early 70's (or late 60's). The memory that has stuck with me most was the stained glass memorial to those that had learned to parachute there during the war. I wonder is it still there, and if so where?
As a young lad in the 1960's I would spend all day on the observation piers at the airport with my Ian Allen plane spotter book and my aircraft radio, happy days!" 😊😊
Very good. My parents were quite involved in the protests against the second runway and our house would often be full of protesters having a bath and being fed.
Brilliant video yet again, thank you! However, you missed out a big crash that happened close to the airport, on Shadowmoss road in 1957 and I think it would be great if you could report on this too. Hope there are more videos soon :)
I wish leeds city council had more forwards vision back in the 60s, if that had happened then there would of been a far more successful airport east of the pennines to rival manchester airport, LBA to the east and MAN to the west. Its amazing seeing that photo of MAN airport in 1976 with just T1 and 3 piers with no other terminals or vast apron parking space, just greenery around the airport!
@@astrecks i started travelling over to MAN airport on the train from leeds back in 1995 as a 15year old then! MAN still only had the 1 runway then so usually watched the aircraft from the airport pub at the end of 23r, can remember now all the bac1-11s, 737-200s, 727s, etc
@@easydrive3662 I used to go to the airport before the original runway was extended. After the viewing piers were closed to the public, I would watch the aircraft from the very end of what is now runway 05L and eventually watch the progress of the second runway being built from this point.
The consortium of councils that owned LBA back in the day were too greedy when it came selling it off. Unlike the councils who owned Manchester who retained a majority controlling shareholding, they dumped the lot for a one-off financial gain. I was a regular business flyer from 1982 when I used to get a Viscount to LHR to connect with Saudia flights to Riyadh, until 2019 when I was doing weekend commuting to RMU after I moved to Spain. Whilst the 'shopping experience' was expanded there was no corresponding upgrades to airside facilities. Two failed Ozzie VC funded takeovers have come to nowt. Thankfully I am now retired and will never use the airport again....
@@IndaloMan im pretty certain that if LBA was able to expand more and was located say to the east of leeds it would of now been a big player in the aviation world, probably the 4th uk airport after Heathrow, gatwick and manchester serving the east of the country. Saying that LBA has finally this year started on its expansion of the terminal with a 2 year plan of expansion!

Every new vid has a little more polish. Nice one BTW The chandeliers still exist and are in storage. Although translating airport management speak, that could mean they're in a skip. 😂
Excellent documentary! i used to love going to the airport to plane spot in the early 90s with my dad and it didnt cost a penny to get into the building etc. Now they are trying to make you pay for anything at every turn!
Well done. Reminds me of the Skyfry and 3 piers. Anyone remember the little green tv sets with seats?. Cost 50pence to watch. Remember the chanderliers
Is Ringway really the country's third largest airport? I'll admit it may be the third busiest but with two full time runways, three terminals and as many if not more aircraft stands than Gatwick it could claim to be the second largest. Maybe HS2 should have been sold to the (London) public/politicians as a way of not building a third runway at Heathrow and a second at Gatwick, by combining a forth terminal into the HS2 station at the North end of Ringway's apron and (controversially) renaming the airport, London Ringway.
Birmingham Airport actually proposed the idea of not building further runways at Heathrow/Gatwick and using/growing BHX instead. I still think it makes so much sense… Manchester already serves the North (and much of the Midlands) so is already huge.
