Great interview with Walton about Wooden's addition to the success pyramid. Bill's ability to bring color & analysis to basketball of any level is his best contribution.
When I look at who is the greatest coaches, I look at their success with what talent they have. What Coach K was able to do with what he had is quite amazing really.
Wooden coached Indiana State for two years, and won 75% of his games, BEFORE he went to coach at UCLA. So, YES, John Wooden would have success anywhere he coached. He never had a losing season as a coach. Coach K. coached Army for 5 years, before Duke, and had 2 losing seasons. Coach W coached for 29 seasons, won 10 NCAA championships and 80% of his games. Coach K coached for 47 years with 4 losing seasons, 5 championships and won 77% of his games. Wooden gets the nod in my book. Both WOULD have success anywhere they coached.
Were you there when Nick Saban’s assistants were giving out McDonald’s bags of money in trailers? Just stop. Everybody wanted to be in Los Angeles in the 50s/60s. UCLA/USC recruited itself

Bill Walton, truly one of the greatest living American poets.

Great Bill Walton interview!
John Wooden was a 3 time All-American at Purdue U. !!
Wooden is the greatest coach ever hands down!!!
I’m going to miss Bill. RIP
Wooden clubs the rat....
K had too many early outs. Lehigh... Mercer... and others.
Would John Wooden or Coach K have had the same success if they coached at Ball State? This greatest coach argument is so God damn stupid.
How are you measuring success? Wooden would definitely have been a great coach, wherever he was; you can clearly see this from the words he spoke.

was he there the day Sam Gilbert handed him all the great players
It was actually assistant coach Jerry Norman that got All the Great Players to UCLA. Wooden glossed over that in his retirement...
UCLA, So cal in the 60s, Wooden himself had nothing to do with it

Wooden is by far a greater coach then mike k
