Running Dry: Cochise County residents taking action as groundwater wells run dry

- Cochise County residents are taking action as residential wells in the area go dry. Some say the increasing number of farms owned by out-of-state companies are depleting the region's groundwater levels too quickly.
Crazy how there telling residents to lower their water usage while still allowing huge golf courses and farming which is incredibly water intensive. Like those two factors are running arizona dry
I have no problem with farming. It's golf that I have a problem with. If it gets any worse there are a few groups planning to burn the turfs.
Farming is filling your plate. Food won't grow without water.
California sucks millions of gallons of water from the Colorado river...
@@GibsonReview Agree that turf golf courses in the deserts are hard to justify. But there is a cooling effect that offsets some of the heat generated by all of the concrete, asphalt, buildings and other heat absorbing elements in cities.

no more car washes, no more snowbirds growing grass and watering their driveways and the street
Car washes probably have little to no effect on the water crisis. Its farming. People watering their drives isnt even that big of a deal. Its farming.... Stop farming in the desert like idiots and maybe you wont run out of water. Do a little research at least.
Or they can just bring more water to the state💀
Yes, let's put the pinch on residents...many who have been here for generations...and do nothing about the farmers. That makes sense! Silly pesant residents think they matter.
That doesn't account for any significant amount of water usage.
You should attempt to pretend to do some research before pretending you know what you're talking about.

We need more trees
Trees need water 💦 to grow and survive , the main point of the story is the lack of water sooo... Back to square one .

Force the dairy farms to close - this is reducolus
Don't belong in the desert. and nut farms that belong to out-of-state companies.... ridiculous
l
Dairy farms account for 1-4% of all water usage.
Actual farmland accounts for more than 60% of all water usage.

Should be building a pipeline from north Dakota where they are flooding just about every year. Nevada California would be interested too. Maybe Manitoba in Canada would be interested too
Terrible idea. You have any idea how large a pipe would have to be to bring enough water to feed a community like that? And how expensive it would be? And the fact it goes to the Rockies, which have earthquakes all the time.
Now, it might be doable to run a much shorter distance pipe from California to Arizona. Bringing water in from a desalination plant. It's still going to be expensive though
No! Enough is enough! People are killing this country. They want to live there let them deal .
RUclips Teezy T Pandemic Struggling. Song says it all.
How about the state help w subsidies to drill a deeper well.
Maybe stop trying to sustain a farm in a frigging desert environment. When you are removing 4 gallons for every 1 gallon going into the aquifer sooner or later it doesn't matter how deep the well if there isn't any water left.
@@Dobviews No! No No. Food is important, especially because it grows here in the winter because other regions are not potent at the time not to mention it can supply our region since fuel costs are going up it would be non sense to have dairy sent from the East Coast or up North down the Southwest. If Dubai can generate clouds to fertilize there dessert, then ours can be rescued as well.
@@pinacolada1393 Then you and other voters need to start developing that technology sooner rather than later and create a sustainable system. Right now bleeding your aquifers dry is not your answer. You cannot get blood from a turnip, nor can you forever and increasingly deplete your aquifers. You created the mess, be part of the solution. Demand better from your local water boards, farmers and communities. I see many golf courses and green lawns in your area that are wasteful.
You chose to live in a desert and now you are learning that water is not easy to come by there. Get busy or start moving.
As for Source using solar and fans to pull in air through fans for a water source... looks like it will only make a small dent in your problem which still leaves your area in hellscape. Good luck with all that *denial!*
They already go to deep for to much money....yours isnt a solution it's a delay

I do not mind agriculture using water, they are growing food. But out of town owners like saufi Arabia growing alfalfa to be sent back to Arabia to feed cattle ? Is this necessary. Big users are copper mines who use lots of water

RUclips Teezy T Pandemic Struggling. Guys song is down to earth.
Yes it's about time
So regulations are actually ok in the end.
Regulations are all about risk management man. And the harsher the environment, the more risk there is.
People & Politicians living there are going to have to come to grips that there should be no new growth or no new farms until they get more water.
@@jasoncrandall73 AZ is a desert and the state is not bordering a ocean either, bad times ahead. I brought up the ocean because you can desalt the ocean water like san diego are doing now. One solution create a desalination plants with our neighbors in the South, Mexico because California and Texas with sell the water expensive and the companies using up all the ground water now with their nuts farms are from California that is an act of war LOL.
Politicians have convinced Republicans that we don't need to regulate anything. And they take full advantage of those people who were dumb enough to vote them in.
Only when it benefits them, otherwise they are perfectly fine removing child assistance programs, or anything else beneficial for anyone else.
I have a question that maybe strange to most in Arizona, would you like it to rain there??
Just asking, I could help.
Will be interesting to see what happens with this over next 10 years

Thirst will happen.
When I was a kid some family owned farm land in southern California. Time to water, he flooded his fields wasting thousands of gallons of water. When I asked why so much waste he said it doesn't matter the well will never dry up. .......... See the problem. He continued this for 30 years. Flooding the fields. Essentially wasting water letting it run all over down into roads. Ditches. They didn't care. They said it is infinite water. But we're they wrong.

Maybe, just maybe, think about starting to collect as much rain water as possible. It’ll be a reliable backup if need be 🤔 🙏🏾
What rain water?
@@jimbeam2705 that’s why said as a backup. Trust me, I know how little rain we get. Some this is better than nothing.
RUclips Teezy T Pandemic Struggling. Song says it all.
It's absurd. 90% of that agriculture has to go away. Try Louisiana or Mississippi- not the desert. It's not sustainable.
There’s also such a thing as too much water for crops. The hurricanes and frequent deluges may not make for good growing conditions for these crops.
RUclips Teezy T Pandemic Struggling

I say take a close look at the state and local politicians, some one had to approve this…
Raising cattle and crops in the desert ???? I'm confused... someone explain .... I think I know the answer ... LOL
Crops I can definitely understand getting rid of or relocating, or switching to more renewable formats but those formats cost a significant amount of money, same category as desalination plants. Raising cattle on the otherhand only accounts for 1-2% of water usage in the state of Arizona.
RUclips Teezy T Pandemic Struggling.
The proud-to-be "conservative" speaking in this video misses the point about cattle ranches and dairy farms, as well as the crops needed to sustain these farm animals. A lactating cow consumes 30-50 gallons a day. It takes ~1,800 gallons of water to produce one pound of beef. Moreover, corporations are drilling ever deeper into aquifers that private citizens and smaller ranches can't afford, to become and then sustain these massive agricultural activities. The fact is, droughts of surface water (rivers) equate to droughts in acquifers. They are connected. Therefore, best farming conservation efforts pale in comparison to the ever-increasing amounts of water these corporations need to remain profitable over the needs of "conservatives" to have fresh drinking water.
I guess it doesn't take any water to grow watermelon, strawberries and lettuce that give almost no caloric value.
The Coronado dairy is sucking up all the water meanwhile residents are asked to cut back. Get rid of the dairy, solve the water problem… but then no one will have jobs.
I wonder why these corporate farm interests ( both cattle and plant), choose to farm in such a dry environment to begin with? Is the land very cheap ? I find it confusing.
@O I just looked it up. Wow.
@O I agree. The Nestle company , among others, is paying next to nothing to take water from US aquifers. They target small towns that have lost their primary industry such as former mill towns in Maine, and exploit the towns' desperate need for income.
Thanks to Saudi using our water 💦 for growing Alfalfa then shipping it back to Saudi thanks that’s so smart Arizona
Meanwhile Saudi and Canadias keep taking water to grow alfalfa for their horses or spinach and none goes to AZ

We lost our family well in Cochise in the 80's. It was a somewhat more than 100 ft deep. Many others did too. Risk and cost of drilling a new one, possibly as deep as a thousand feet and still getting bad water caused many to have their water trucked in. I guess they haven't learned a damn thing with fifty years of trying. Looking at the news from the whole state though, you'll all be sucking sand not too long in the future.
Okay there goes your real estate investment😢
She doesn't want an AMA because small ranchers could lose their livelihood? Meanwhile most of the other residents lose theirs? The small ranchers are gonna lose their livelihood in a few years when their wells go dry anyway. Greed is such a powerful ignorance.
