  • I dedicate this video to my mother. I recorded this beautiful Odissi in Raag Kalavati written by Banamali Das a few weeks before losing her. Among my first gurus in life, Ma inculcated in me a deep love for music and high regard for Odisha’s traditional music and musical poetry. I am uploading a video on youtube after several months, and even though an informal recording, this one seemed most appropriate at this time.
The memory of my mother putting her hands together in the Odissi dance pose for a flute, despite being very weak physically, will forever be etched into my heart. She then tapped out the rhythm of this composition, on her chest, her eyes closed, her breath faltering. This is the power of beautiful music that tied my mother and me together.
So much of this Odissi makes me think of you, Ma. The mention of the “keeya” flower in the lyrics is so reminiscent of your love for Odisha and your efforts to make me and Apa appreciate little things of beauty. You would point out to the “forests” of keeya as we drove by the Gopalpur sands on the way to Gunupur to see Aiee, Mamu, Maeen (maternal uncle and aunt) and our cousins. In more recent years, when you sat transfixed in front of the TV, watching the live broadcast of the Ratha Jatra in Puri, you would ask why the commentators describing the flowers used to adorn the deities did not mention the Keeya flower.
Ma, you continue to inspire me to learn more, practice more, and do more to spread Odisha’s beautiful music beyond our beloved state. I don’t have the words to thank you, they never would be enough.

The intense love of the devotee expressing their devotion to their God, the unchanging love of a mother for her children, the soul as it prostrates in its ascending journey to the heavens. Such is the emotion evoked through your voice.
Listening to you sing this exquisite piece and looking at the beautiful visuals brought back Ma’s great love of flowers, plants, Krishna, Aiee, Aja and everyone who touched her life.
Thank you for celebrating her immense artistic and human spirit through your music. May you continue to have Goddess Saraswati reside in your vocal cords and Krishna in your heart.

God tests Talent of artists in the most difficult time of their life..and a in return a true artist always comes up with the most glorified work of art and wins the hearts..
I read the description of your video too...I could not stop being emotional thinking of bijaya apa and her time spent near mama's pooja room singing her father's (my jeje) recited bhajans remembering her childhood days..
Mithu apa this song and your singing today is most amazing one ever .It has so many expressions of raasleela so beautiful to listen and imagine..loved it ❤
