    I was in Ghana last summer for two weeks and had the best time of my life. So, I’m just gonna put it out there…when I was in the markets and someone wanted to sell me a bracelet for 50 cedis, or about eight bucks, did I sweat it and say, hey I’ll give you 25? Hell no. I gave him or her the 50 cedis and we laughed and joked about it and I felt good about it. Do you honestly want to deny giving someone an extra few dollars? Tourist dollars are low now, and food prices are going up. I love Ghana!

    • @KelsAcosta
      @KelsAcosta  3 года назад +47

      Rick, thanks so much for watching and leaving a comment champ. Never want to deny someone a few extra dollars, especially if they deserve it. However, learning the basics of currency exchange and negotiating are vital to those traveling for the first time. I love Ghana as well, thanks so much 4 your support!

    • @CI3306
      @CI3306 2 года назад +37

      The seller joked and laughed with you because they ripped you off. LOL! Slashing the price in half method is exactly what my Ghanaian husband uses when bartering prices. I am all for people making business/sells but definitely not by ripping people off. Once you peruse the market and you get what the average rate is for particular items, you know what price range to work with when bartering. Some sellers will drain you dry and won't think twice about it while you are out of money.

    • @rickbunte3147
      @rickbunte3147 2 года назад +28

      @@CI3306 Hi. You're right I guess. He ripped me off for four or five dollars. It's okay.
      Maybe this year I'll bargain the sellers down more. But whether I do or don't, I'm sure I'll still feel that connection. I still love Ghana.

    • @latoyascott1147
      @latoyascott1147 Год назад +20

      @Rick Bunte I actually agree with you. A lot of these places rely heavily on tourism. I make it a point to shop at local markets, and I don't haggle prices either. I pay what they ask gladly and don't mind if I'm not charged the same as the locals because nine times out of ten, I'm in a better financial position as the locals being a tourist.

    • @s.o7003
      @s.o7003 Год назад +6

      @@latoyascott1147 waw that’s a really nice way to analyze the situation. I usually add a few extra dollars to the road side hawkers. They go through so much yet remain positive and strong. But yes your right tourist are sometimes in a better financial position than the citizens so not be kind. Usually if you ask for a discount they’ll give you a discount as well.

    Ghana maybe time is so accurate. You gotta appreciate the culture's lax approach to timings. People stop and do things on the way and see friends and will stop and chat. They don't do it because they don't respect you but because that is just their way of life. I remember being in a bar with my local friend and a guy on his way to perform errands saw us and he stopped and had a drink and a chat for 30 mins with us. So he definitely took a while to get to his original destination.

    This is exactly what you would do in Thailand for example. This is not about denying someone a few extra bucks. It is about realistic prices compared tp average monthly income in that country. I have been many times in The Gambia where the average salary is about 60 EUR which is around 4000 Dalasi. So if a cab driver asks for 400 Dalasi fora just one 10 minute ride, this is obviously way off. (locals would pay around 100) but often take a shared taxi for 35 Dalasi).

      Well said my friend! It's def about learning the way of local wherever you are .. if foreigners want you to embrace a culture fully then it makes sense to know the ropes and how not to get taken advantage of. Giving to others usually occurs when you travel. Thanks for your thoughts, hope to see you back soon!

    Also you could have mentioned to not hand over or take anything with your left hand. Ghanaians consider that to be very inpolite.
