I think you aren't factoring in how much money people usually have to buy properties like this. They can comfortably pay expenses and take care of their family without much thought or they usually wouldn't have bought it in the first place.

But look at Elon Musk for example...I think he said he only has one large property left, because he's sold all the others, but if I remember reading correctly, he now actually lives in a small prefabricated tiny house for his primary residence, as opposed to the collection of mansions that he previously owned. Granted, he's living there for product testing purposes. But he has been quoted as saying "I think possessions kind of weigh you down." So if the richest man in the world (as of right now) can think that possessions kind of weigh people down, I would think he, of all people, would & should know. Not all extremely wealthy people necessarily think the same way as each other. And not everyone, whether rich or poor, always likes all the same type of things someone else does necessarily.
